I am 100% with Joel on the Toboggan thing - until I went to WV for a year, a toboggan was always one of those wooden sleds with metal rails. Nope, in the Appalachian region (KY, TN, WV), it's a freakin' hat! I first heard it when someone said they liked my toboggan and I was like whut? I am not surprised that there are many Australians here who do not recognize our slang. It is probably a generational thing. I knew all the words/phrases and know hundreds more because of my generation's tendency to communicate more face to face and to banter. Texting has taken away a lot of that directness and the texts themselves are a language devoid of a lot of historical slang.
You only have to travel around any large town or city to see how people's main existence is to spend their day with fingers going ten to the dozen or the mobile phone glued to their ear, oblivious of the world around them.

Loved this! I grew up in Louisville, Lexington, and Morehead KY... I hadn't heard of ANY of these except one or two, but I felt like there were a ton missing, such as "Peachy-keen," "burning ears," "itchy palms," "Geez Louise," "y'all's/y'all're/y'all'll," "purdy," "youngin'," "holler (as in geographical location)," etc!!! Not that they had to include all of these, I'm just really surprised a couple didn't show up in there! But maybe that's more Appalachian slang? And I've never actually heard people living in Louisville call it The Ville.
