  • My granddaughter help blow up my Wharfedale speakers, but lucky enough I found a quick replacement for the midrange speakers.
Don't worry she is paying me back a £1 a week out of her pocket money !

Great video, very enjoyable to watch. I picked up a pair of Linton XP2's last week in a charity shop in Frinton -on -Sea for £20. They were 'untested' but in absolutely amazing condition, so I bought them before someone else did. Sadly, they don't seem to work properly at all just sound all tinny and like they are not wired properly. One got going for a while then sounded dreadful again. I'm wondering if it's the circuit board inside that has blown? Any thought's, thanks Michael.

Hi steve, a chance you take with some charity shops. I would start of by testing each speaker unit. So taking out both bass drivers and getting a meter ( chep meter about a fiver will be fine ) to test the resistance across both terminals to see if they read or open circuit, if you dont have a meter then use a AAA battery and a piece of wire, just put the negative of the battery on one terminal and use the wire to connect the positive to the other terminal, just touching it quickly, it will make a crackling sound if working, try this on all drivers with meter or battery, this will tell you if all the drivers are ok. In the meantime check all wires are nice and tight on each driver, check connections on back of each speaker is tight on crossover and not loose, look at crossover and check all the components are soldiered in good and check to see if there are any hairline cracks on the crossover board. But testing all the drivers will tell you if its them or crossover

@@MichaelYates Thanks very much for the reply Mike, I'll get on to that tommorow. I'll let you know how it goes, they are a lovely set of speakers it's worth spending some time on them. Part of the 'joy' of vintage hi-fi I guess is fixing stuff ourselves.

@@MichaelYates Thanks Mike, okay managed to borrow a multimeter from a neighbour who used to work for Eastern Electricity and still has his Company issue one! The 'good' news is all the speakers check out as not blown so I'm turning my attention to the circuit board and tbe caps Each board has 4 similar caps which I suspect have dried out. ? The guy in tbe shop said they (the Lintons)hadn't been used for 30 years so my neighbour said definitely the caps will have dried out. I just dont want to spend a load of money as there are 8 to replace. Any suggestions? Thanks again Mike.

@@stevieG. Thats good news as getting a replacement drivers would be more expensive than new caps, I have used Mundorf ECap's which sound nice, though on Diamond 3's I did they did seem to add quite a bit of brightness to them and they are just on boarder line of not being to bright. I have since tried a cheaper caps Audyn CAP ELKO RAUH Bipolar Electrolytic Capacitors and they sounded nice to, just a tad less brighter than the Mundorf Ecaps, I am now using the speakers with the Audyn caps and I am happy with them. Please let the channel know how it all goes and what you went with as all helps others.

Just watched a couple of your videos. Thanks for info you provided. I'm in NYC and have had Wharfedale Glandale ABR's since late 70s. They're the best speakers I've ever had. Unfortunately Someone gave me an amp/receiver that I connected to the speakers. It was a Linton which had way too much power for these 70 watt wharfedales. one album played fine and then POP! I immediately disconnected everything but it ws obvious I didn't know that amp overpowered the speakers. I then tried a Fisher amp 42 W and one tweeter squeaked out Gene Pitney. Awful. Being n NY, the Vintage shops charge a lot to fix. I haven't unscrewed the speakers yet to see what if anything happened to the wiring. I used to play blues guitar and that's all I knew for electronics. I have no amp now and not sure what to do. The speakers without trying to play them look ok. Would you be so kind as to suggest what to do next. I'd hate it if I actually blew the speakers, but would invest if I could get their great sound back. Thanks for your videos!

That is bad news. If you can get hold a multi meter then undoing the speakers from the enclosure and then testing each speaker seperately on the multi meter (on the ohms lowest range) they will give a reading around 8 ohms, you would be how to tell if one has blown as there would be no reading at all. If you do not have a meter then a used AAA battery 1.5 volt battery would do, by just touching each end of the battery across the speaker terminals for a split second will make the speaker crackle, this would indicate that the speaker has not blown ( gone open curcuit ).

@@MichaelYates fyi speakers have what looked like 3 speakers in cabinet - woofer, midrange and tweeter. I took the woofer out and it doesn't have the magnetic box on the back and no wires. Is that what they call an "exciter" or was this just a nothing speaker. Wonder why wharfedale or the NYC store J&R would do that unless getting rid of some cabinets. The midrange has the magnetic box behind speaker and I removed the u shaped red & black wires off the terminals. The tripe A didn't cause any sound, if I tapped the speaker terminals. I see that some sites call wire inputs as terminals also, but didn't think you meant that. Depressing. I'll try the other speaker in a bit. Not sure how to test tweeters.

@@MichaelYates I guess these poor speakers are done. I battery-tested the other speaker's middle 8", same as the first, no sound or scratching either. The setup is exactly the same. The bottom 8" an "exciter" ? from what I read...no magnetic box, no wiring for terminals. It has an orange circular ceramic? piece inside the back of the speaker. What a hard lesson. I can't believe I connected that amp without researching it and all the #s on it that I knew nothing of. Btw it was a Luxman Integrated Amplifier. So many settings I didn't understand, even after printing out a manual from the internet. The super in my bldg during covid lockdown gave the Luxman to me after half my apartment bldg fled NY to their home states leaving lots of belongings behind. A few months before and asked him to throw out my old amp and turntable, thinking I could easily replace them. He didn't throw them out but tried to sell them. Legally they were still mine since they never made it to the curb (garbage). it was not my intent to gift them, I'm a lawyer--don't hate me! I can't stand them either!. lol. He had them stored on a shelf 15 feet high and refused to return them. The next week the turntable was on a table but no amp. I took that but does me no good now. I guess he felt guilty when he gave me that Luxman. It was a strange time and likely left by a former tenant. On lockdown with nothing else to do, I figured I'd hook it up and listen to some albums The rest is history. I learned a lot today, taking those speakers apart. Thank you so much for your instructions. I truly appreciate your help ....and reading my long comments. If there's anything else I can do to revive these speakers please let me know. If not, maybe you can suggest some system that's not too expensive but handles bass well. Maybe I should purchase another vintage system. I can always try eBay and hope not to get ripped off. Years ago, a British bass player, Steve York, who helped me in the recording studio said "Wharfedales! great, they're from England!" I'd never heard of them, but the sound was better than anything. Maybe you've heard Steve. Broken English w Marianne Faithful, Manfred Mann, Robert Palmer, Arthur Brown, Elke Brookes, many others. He was a studio musician and toured. Great person and musician. Anyway, Michael, thanks again. It was great to find someone who knew about Wharfedales! and your willingness to help me. If there's anything else to be done...stay in touch! Be well, stay healthy and watch out for your granddaughter! :)

Just found your videos while looking for a decent set of bookshelf speakers for my JVC RK10L
Found some Wharfedale Diamond 1's on Facebook but one of the woofers must be dodgy, horrible noise off it.
Any suggestions for a replacement for these?

I would suggest the Wharfedale Diamond 3's , great speakers a tad shy on bass. For a warmer sound around the same price the Celestion 3's

@@DavidWeatherall Sounds like coil could be scraping against magnet inside. Alas not really fixable. A second hand driver would be a better bet if you can find one. Let me know how the Celestions go. Though a 2nd hand pair of diamonds 3's go fairly cheap these days and they will sound better than the 1's , I have the diamond 2's but the 3's are a much better sounding speaker
