    I built the high end Wilkinson Tele kit from Stew Mac, it comes with all high end Wilkinson parts and |I got a good discount on nitro laquers and clear coat for buying the kit, I ended up with an excellent Telecaster that is comparable to my Fender Telecaster.
    I had great fun building the kit and did it as per the instructions with loads of sanding pre and post finish with grain filler and a vinyl undercoat, I love taking this guitar out of the case, that nitro smell is addictive!

    Thanks for this video, Dave. I've often thought about getting a kit guitar but really didn't want the faff of soldering, wiring etc. Thought about a Crimson kit (which are stunning quality, but expensive) and you have convinced me that the HB is the place to start. I've got 3 of their finished guitars, which are incredible value and fun to play, so looks like the wife and kids will be buying me a kit for my next birthday. Thanks again.

    Hi from Phoenix, Arizona. I just put this kit together and love it. I cut the headstock to a Fender style template and painted the headstock and body turquoise and it's surf cool. I tried spray paint first and then switched to an acrylic and applied it with a cloth and it went on super smooth and then finished it with True Oil to a gloss finish. Final step was applying auto polish to give it a high sheen. I may get another one and use magic swirl paint where you dip it into the paint and it comes out with a swirl like pattern. Good luck with it. Look forward to the next video.

    Hey Dave! On the string alignment (low E and high E not centered), that can often be fixed by loosening the neck screws just a bit, gently pulling the neck sideways until the spacing is good, and then re-tightening the screws. With the gap you have in the neck pocket you should have room; it only takes a tiny movement to adjust it. Also I vote for either no finish, or something that keeps it that same blonde/natural color, because it looks GREAT!!!

    I bought a Thomann Jazzmaster kit , pretty good for 77 euros . the neck was aligned and matched the sides of the neck pocket well but there was a 2mm gap bewteen the bottom of the neck and the guitar body. Aesthetc thing more than anything because the neck was very firm and the scratchplate covers the gap but when I do the rebuild I'll put a shim in.

    I've done a couple of thomann kits and been pleasantly surprised with them. The strings supplied are always rubbish, I tend to use them just to check alignment and action then sling them for decent ones. Some people are a bit sniffy about the stock pickups and tuners but I find them ok, you can always upgrade them later.

Cheers Dave! I will be following this build with interest!

    • @tamsinmccormick
      @tamsinmccormick 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check your pots I'll bet they are either all A -log type or a B for the volume and two As for the tone !!

  • @tamsinmccormick
    @tamsinmccormick 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    'Few things :- On these kits there tends to be 3 A250K ohm log pots - You might want to change the tone ones to B250k ohm if you want some proper varation on the tone . But if you only play tone full on or full off it won't matter !! The body will paint up easier than stain !! To stain it is the devil's own job because you will need to sand off all the paint preparation that Harley Benton have put on . To see that hold the body at an angle to a light source and you will see it glisten !! . The body is a little on the thin side more like a Squier than a strat in that a fender trem block will be too big for the route by about 5mm !! I know because I tried it !! The pickups themselves are very good and the middle one is RWRP so you will get hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4 .
    The head stock is easily shaped with a Junior Hack saw with a metal cutting blade, I downloaded a free template which I printed and taped to the head stock but you can also work with a piece of cardboard that you have used to draw an outline from an existing headstock. If you want an easy shiny but natural look just do 14 thin coats of Tru-Oil on the body .Prep is minimal as is the aroma. Do two coats a day for 2 weeks or less for a satin look. After two weeks further waiting time buff up with car polish , then Dr Duck's axe wax or similar.. Satin finish won't need the carnuba just a good rub over with a clean cloth. This is the easiest least smelly method - Whatever you do there is always the waiting time .
    Lastly if you do decide to change the pots do not and I repeat do not Sodder them !! Solder them instead. I don't know what is wrong with the Americans on here who keep telling people to get a soddering Iron and sodder everything in sight !! I just hit the esc key when they start all that !! I look forward to see how you get on.
    I am amazed though that for just £8 more Thomann do the ready made version with choice of fretboard maple or Roseacre and an HSS version for the same price !! But I suspect the pots !!

    These HB kits are really awesome. I built 2 strats, 1 tele and 1 SG already. Must say the tele and SG are better that the strat (even with the stock parts, these are great). I have always just slightly sanded down the bodies and gave them a true oil finish (the SG got a burgundy stain first before applying the oil finish).

    You need to do a bit of woodwork on the head stock. Thomann obviously left so much wood on it so that they could avoid copyright by having the owner carve the S-type head stock shape themselves. Just make a paper template from one of your strats then a handsaw and a bit of sandpaper on the jobs done.

    Loosen the neck bolts a little and pull the neck sideways to line up the strings better. Easier to do if screws pass through the holes of the body so can have a bit of play. Then tighten the screws up.

    Damn wish I had a friend that would send me random guitar lol.
    Always wanted a crack and building epically as I've retro fitted my garage with work benches etc.
    As for painting I love the effect burning a guitar has especially as the grain on yours looks really nice.

    I love the Wilkinson vintage style trems that are upgraded a little and they’re like $33 shipped. They work so much better than the fender ones. What about a telecaster shaped headstock. I’ve seen some custom shop strats with them called troublemakers

    Those kit guitars are the best, I made my own strat and it plays as good as any.

      Liberon finishing oil, will make it look and feel great, that's what I used, sanded to a high grit.

    Only a couple of things to say really. First, from a phone screen it does look like it would have looked wonderful just stained rather than coloured but you can see it better there than we can I guess.
    Second, beautiful outro. Melancholic but weirdly uplifting.
    Stay safe in these weird times Dave.

    I see it Marshal Gold nobs plate of your amp , but... relic enough to see the dark wood through. That would be WIKED !!

    Did you check tune knobs per height sequence? You made look so easy to build a kit guitar 👍
