the white(or any colour) background is easier to be indentified and be removed thus for someone who wants to remove a background filled with many different colours, this tutorial will not help much.

Echo Affliction That's because you didn't unlock your backround. Look at your layers, there is a lock button. Double click it and it becomes a normal layer. Once you unlocked it you should be able to just click delete.

if you are still getting the white background, try saving it as a png and make sure it is saved with the layers, NOT as a copy. this took me a while to figure out lol.

Would have been much better showing how to remove an actual background from a photograph, and not a solid color. How do I remove a more complex background? It's getting rid of half this guy's hair? You will need to save as .PNG then or export to .PNG file. JPEG will keep white background

Try saving your edited image as a PNG with No Interlace.

Come on dude, this is absolutely the WORST way to remove a white background. Why don't you try zooming in around the edges of the Obama image and show us your fine handy work? And you mentioned alpha channel? Do you even know what that is?
