Theodore DeReese Pendergrass is an American singer-songwriter of soul and R&B music. He was born in the town of Kingstree, South Carolina. Pendergrass lived his whole childhood in the Philadelphia area before rising to fame as the lead vocalist of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. After leaving the group in 1976, Pendergrass recorded five consecutive platinum albums for the Philadelphia International label as a solo artist a feat at the time for an African-American R&B singer. Pendergrass's career was put on pause because of his chest-down paralysis following an automobile accident in March 1982. Pendergrass continued his successful solo career until announcing his retirement in 2007. He passed away in January 2010 from respiratory failure.
