  • Come with me to RSPB minsmere in search of one of the UKs most illusive birds. Along the way I will show you loads of other wildlife that lives at the nature reserve, birds, mammals, insects and more!
    I was with Fred from ‪@WatchRWildlife‬ on this trip and a few of the clips are filmed by him.

    Bee Orchids. When I worked at 3M research in Harlow , we had Bee orchids growing in the front of the building , one of the staff spotted them and it became a nature reserve , the mowing was integrated into their life cycle

    Fabulous day & fabulous footage! We have Bitterns here in New Zealand, but they’re not common. I’ve seen them two or three times, usually while in a passing car & they in a roadside drain standing in that elegant frozen upright stance. A special bird ❤ Thanks for sharing

    I sometimes watch the African Tau channel quite late (2:00 am’ish) and there is often a pair of spoonbills doing that same side-to-side sweep combined with a forward step. It does make me smile and puts me in mind of *Wimpy* _with his mincer,_ in the early Max Fleischer *Popeye* cartoons.

    Hi Liam. Just a recent subber here from Nz. A quick Google search tells me that down here we have a guesstimate of 1000 Nz Bitterns left. Unfortunately I couldn't find a date for when those stats had been released. Many new wetlands have been created, however, so fingers crossed, that figure will increase. Those muntjac deer would give me a heart attack if I was alone in the bush on a dark night, and heard one over your way. But being a NZr of sound mind, 😂 I would realise that there had to be a genuine explanation for that sound.
    Red deer were introduced down here in and around 1851 for hunting, but quickly took over and were destroying native bush. They just became a pain in the proverbial. They were straying onto valuable farmland too. So had to be eliminated to control the numbers. And for the sake of the snowflakes, there are still wild herds of red deer. No predators here. According to Google there are estimates of 40,300 muntjac in Uk. I would think that species would need a serious control of their numbers. Thank you for sharing Liam. Appreciate the time spent editing each time. Thank you. Atb from down here.

    Lovely range of flora and fauna captured on film there, Liam. Never seen a bittern, although I heard them 'boom' in another part of east Anglia once. This hot summer seems to be bringing out the damselflies in large numbers locally - I lost count at 50 (of 2 species) in a short stretch of the Mole yesterday - but there are fewer dragonflies so far than last year.

    • @AShotOfWildlife
      @AShotOfWildlife  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Clive697 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only 15 frogs? Friends and I moved two dustbins teeming with amphibians to a local park when the landlord wanted the pond filled in. Several escaped into the car on the way. When we released them, it resembled a biblical plague as hundreds of frogs, plus a few toads and many newts scattered in all directions. Probably upset the park's ecological balance a little!

    Bitterns call are meant to sound like a horn. But I looked up the bittern call sounded more like a phone vibrating :/
    Sometimes birds look fascinating and sometimes (if they are big birds or birds of prey) intimidating. Birds like raptors look so serious and fierce.

    • @AShotOfWildlife
      @AShotOfWildlife  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The call is really really deep, if I had to describe it I would say its like dragging a heavy chair over a solid wooden floor, or blowing air over the top of an open large bottle (I hope that makes sense). The laptop I use to make videos cannot actually produce a sound as deep as the bittern call so I need to use headphones to be able to hear it!

    Bittern's are around the Yorkshire reserves near me. I've only ever heard them and been wanting to see them for ages but never been lucky so far. Gutted you beat me to it but congrats haha, and great footage here! Sure I'll see one one day, just need to get lucky when they fly off to search for food during mating months.

    • @AShotOfWildlife
      @AShotOfWildlife  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Keep searching and im sure youll get lucky soon enough. I have been searching for them for quite a while to be fair, most of the time ending up with nothing to show (apart from all the other amazing wildlife which you cant avoid in wetlands).

    I went to Walberswick Marshes (just up from Minsmere) one spring day, and had 5 Bittern sightings, two individuals and three together in the course of an hour or so. Never seen them before or since. Hear them around there occasionally.

    Very interesting and enjoyable and understandable content. As a watcher from North America I can relate to many of the animals you observe. We have Bitterns that are no less secretive. Very much a family trait I suppose. Keep it going! You're very resourceful and have great knowledge of the wildlife. God bless and safe travels

    Very nice video.
    I got my 1st bittern at Island mere hide. We went jnto bittern hide that day, and it was raining, so there was only space for 1 person and the idiot sitting next to the space moved up so we couldn't sit down!
    We had the last laugh, though, as a bittern was feeding in the open right in front of the empty Island Mere hide as we walked in

      Haha, I have had similar things happen to me, with an otter and a red deer stag in Scotland. Before the days of making these videos but it was a similar type of thing where someone unnecessarily stopped me from joining in on one activity so I had to do another and it turned out to be much better than the original plan.

    I have followed loads of sightings around Yorkshire but it was never to be, we the went to Blacktoft Sands RSPB Goole, England UK and saw my first Bittern flight, the only thing that spoils this is that someone pointed to it. " Still counts in my book" 👍👍😂😂
