    The mistake we make as fans is thinking that the UFC is a merit based competition, the majority of recognised sports in the US do not have a PPV model so it is just about the best playing the best, when you have a fight to sell it only makes sense to think about marketability so this should maybe be made more transparent instead of claiming guys have earned a title shot they havent and visa versa

    • @KhalifBeats
      @KhalifBeats ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sadly I agree with you. Makes complete sense. I wish it didn't have to be that way, but of course how are you gonna get people to watch the best of the best if they gotta pay their hard earned money for it? And if the fight is a dud, people will feel 'cheated' and claim those fighters are boring or not worthy of champ status. It is what it is unfortunately.

      @@peeodee6755 i dont agree. Henry Cejudo is a perfect example. He lost to Demetrius, Demetrius never lost the belt, he then rematches with Cejudo and then loses. If someone earns their way back to the top of the line, i think they should get the match regardless if they have already lost to the current champion. also happened with GSP and Matt Hughes, Lyoto Machida and Shogun, and so on.
      fighters learn and grow and mma is the type of sport where someone can end the fight with a lucky shot even if they are outclassed or losing the fight. I have never been a fan of immediate rematches (unless the previous fight ended in controversy i.e. Petr Yan vs Aljo 1, Anderson Silva vs Weidman etc.)
      just my opinion though. im not a matchmaker and i dont run the ufc so it doesnt really matter what i think. and the UFC is first and foremost about the money. the Rankings will always take a back seat to the money fights/fighters.

    Hot take: I understand the whole meritocracy part of the sport, but let's be real leon Edward's vs belal is a fight no one is asking for or cares to see it won't sell. It's just a layup for Edward's, I think most people would rather see an extremely fun build up with an intriguing match up(Colby). Rather than Belal and Edward's selling 100 ppvs and Belal getting destroyed again.

    • @cornball0072
      @cornball0072 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Edwards was getting mauled by Usman until he knocked him out. Even though Usman was controlling that fight, I think that KO over Usman is an indicator that you never truly know how a fight can play out. Imagine if Usman vs Edwards stopped at a no contest at say round 4, it’s possible people would just say that Edwards is not any near Usman’s level so in the end I think a rematch between belal and Edwards is fine. You’re right tho it doesn’t sell and that’s the main factor.

    After watching the video it seems like Dana White Privilege is less about unjust privilege and more about marketing decision making, they might not earn their place by being the best at fighting - but isn't marketing and drawing fans a skill of its own deserving of reward.

    Great job on the video! I just have one argument to make, Dana and the UFC don't make up the rankings. The "mma media" actually make up the rankings, Dana constantly references this in press conferences and says "it's up to them, since they make up the rankings". And yeah, definitely the "mma media" doing it are dropping the ball, the Colby case says it all. The fact that he's still ranked number 2 for this long, can't really blame Dana for giving him the shot. If he wasn't ranked so high it would be harder for the UFC to justify it, though admittedly they would still do it because of "Dana White Privilege", like you say.

I'd say Conor got a fast track, he beat Dennis Sever for the title but I don't think the other guys deserve to be in the same category. UFCs rankings are messed up. They just need a rule that if you win a fight you take the other person's spot or move up 3 spots if you beat a ranked opponent so there is still incentive to fight someone lower ranked than you. Also the loser moves down 3 spots regardless of if it's a title fight or even if they are the champ. Also inactivity for over a certain amount of time should move fighters down the rankings and eventually removed. The lack of system is a problem Colby shouldn't be top 5 or even 10 and khamzat, Belal and Gilbert should be top 3.

If a fighter can't fulfil both of these tasks successfully, then he failed at his job (even if he wins the fight). The UFC isn't a charity that gives out big pay checks to the best performing athletes. The UFC is a business that gives out commensurate pay to the fighters relative to the revenue they generate.

    9:40 not true. Formally, the ratings of the UFC are made up of independent journalists. Dana White's privileges definitely exist, but I don't see that as a problem. 1) regardless of the privileges, if you defeat opponents from the rating, sooner or later you will fight for the title. It is in the interests of the fighter himself to promote himself, win more brightly, fight more often. Leon Edwards at one point had a break without fighting for almost 3 years. Why would he fight a champion? 2) for some reason, in the video, in all cases, such an aspect of ratings as the opponents you defeated is ignored. Benil, Leon, Oliveira defeated weaklings who were not even in the ranking, why would they get a title fight? 3) we, as viewers, benefit from the privileges of Dana White. Personally, I don't want to look at such boring people as Benil and Lyon, especially if they didn't beat anyone from the top.
