As others have said, NIN is the original and Johnny covered it. NIN is a man in turmoil fighting addiction, Johnny's is a man facing his death and reflecting on his life. Exact same lyrics, but the delivery gives them two completely different meanings. Art truly is amazing.

@@cgzec Trent said in an interview he didn't really pay it any mind at all until he saw the video. He heard the recording and didn't really think anything of it. Once he saw the video he said it was Johnny's song.
@@groovelife415 Which is a fair take because the production on the Cash version is miles behind the NIN version. You could argue that its more fitting for what Cash is doing, I would argue that Rick Rubin butchered this song.

Hurt is an original song from NIN. Trent Reznor wrote it. Cash covered their song. Even Reznor said he did it better
Trent never said that. He said the song belongs to Johnny, he was paying respect to a legend and giving Johnny his flowers. And the NIN version is better from an instrumentation and arrangement standpoint. The Cash version removed all the dissonance from the chords and the instrumentation is a bit too stripped down and basic.
Once again, different feelings evoked by different artists doing the same song. That's the whole thought behind the duos. Love your reaction!
I watched NIN perform this live in 2007, the blast of guitar at the end when he says "I would find a way" was like this primal growl of conviction. Chills right down my spine. American 4 is the album Johnny's version of hurt is on. Its mostly covers, his last album released while he was alive and a great album. Johnny also covered Soundgarden's Rusty Cage, it was released posthumously on the Unchained album.

Love this! Should be a series, though it's rare for a cover to transform the original. Disturbed's cover of "Sound of Silence" comes to mind.
Another angle would be retakes, but I'm not sure who does them besides Ren. Lol (e.g. "Bittersweet Symphony" or "Right Here, Right Now" - loved the originals, but the retakes fly.)
I sent Ray a list of 6 or 8 duos, including your suggestion. There are tons of original songs covered by other artists, and the different styles can evoke much different feelings. I am so pleased that Ray liked the idea, and I know he and Stacey already have other duos in mind, so I hope this will be a great series for him.
Powerwolf have done quite a few covers that have been pretty good. They covered Edge of Thorns by Savatage, Riding The Storm and Conquistadors by Running Wild, Shot In The Dark by Ozzy Osborne, The Evil That Men Do by Iron Maiden, amongst others. Well worth a check.

That's the same with sound of silence with disturbed and Simon and Garfunkel. They loved their version (so much better than the original imo) that they just let them "keep it"

NIN released the song "Hurt" in 1995. Johnny Cash covered it 7 years later in 2002.

Another one of original and cover is zombie by bad wolves and cranberries. The singer from cranberries was supposed to do a collab with bad wolves on her aong but she passed the day she was supposed to do the collab. Bad wolves released their cover in memory of her. This story is on their music video. 😢 RIP

Trent Reznor wrote it, he was an addict, Johnny covered it years later. Reznor said the first time he heard it, he only heard part of it, but the 2nd time he really listened and said, It's Johnny's song now. Idk why people keep calling him Nine Inch Nails, he has a name and wrote a beautiful song, he's the singer of NIN but cmon people do better. I love NIN and this song, both versions, this to me is him contemplating the addiction and it's sad also. Johnny was my first crush when I was maybe 5 or 6, I'd run home from playing to watch his show on tv😊

@@susiejo143 NIN started with Trent Reznor doing everything by himself. Pretty Hate Machine was written, performed and produced by Trent Reznor on his own, he has added band members for live shows and has a regular collaborator, Atticus Ross, but NIN is Reznor.

One that will probably be a shock to some (and maybe controversy) but a remake vs original is killing me softly. Fugees is very popular for this one but it was originally (dont know if his was truly original) done by frank senatra. 😊 the controversy is with fugees they did it from a females to males perspective (killing me softly with his song) but frank flipped it (or fugees flipped it) by doing the male to female version (killing me softly with her song)

Honestly, this is one of only a few songs where you need to watch the video. As I’m sitting here typing, I can’t think of any others, but if I say that 50 will jump into the comments to correct me. So… I will assume there are others, and I can’t think of them. But “others” in this case means “a small number, but more than one”.
