I personally think being stranded at sea is lot more scary than being lost in the forest. Think about it, you're not in your element, all predators have a giant advantage and you have to use energy to even stay afloat not to forget hypothermia. In contrast to the forest were you atleast could make a shelter and fire if you have basic survival skills. This is alot more terrifying.
At least in a forest you could build fire, shelter, maybe a long sharp stick as a weapon, you can eat plants and drink from a stream etc What are you supposed to do for food, water, shelter etc if you’re in the middle of the ocean? At least on land you have SOME resources. Limited sure but it’s more than what you have in the water.
Survival chance in forest is higher. You have to be creative to survive in a forest. But ocean oh boy. It's so scary you will run out of oxygen energy and become thirsty and hungry. You don't know what's beneath you. And oceans are so deep.
Very true. Like, literally your only chance of survival in the ocean is if someone finds you. And they have to find you within like, 3 days _if_ you have something keeping you afloat. And probably only hours to a day if you don't have a lifevest or something. In a forest you at least have a chance of finding a creak or river before dying of dehydration.
Sea predators don't give a fuck about divers. As long as you are not flailing like an idiot or bleeding badly, they will ignore you. Hypothermia will get you within 1 night if you are in the water.
Yeah, if I’m lost in the Forrest I probably have a bag of equipment, a couple of guns, some food, water, radio, etc. Even without that, at least I won’t drown.
This whole thing was a logistical nightmare. Imagine going skydiving and getting the safety talk while in the airplane. Whether your going above or below- all safety protocols should be done on land with everyone attentive.
The fact that no one noticed the missing tanks was something that always bothered me about the real life story as well. If you run a dive boat are you seriously not going to notice that 2 of your expensive oxygen tanks are missing and start asking questions about why? They're not exactly the kind of thing someone can steal by sticking it in their backpack.
If i ran a dive boat i wouldn't notice missing oxygen tanks. An oxygen tank would kill anyone breathing from it. I might notice my air tanks missing though!
@@awesomewin1337 yes it’s technically a misnomer to call a dive tank an oxygen tank but most people don’t really care unless your using a different gas mixture but pure oxygen won’t kill you unless your breathing it for a ridiculously long time O2 tanks are used in basically any hospital and believe it or not is part of the first aid treatment for many problems like the Bends and pulmonary edema so any respectable dive boat would have O2 tanks with there first aid kit
Actually, it is possible that it was their tanks and frankly that dive boat suckss... Typically they do name calls and a time to get back to the boat at but guess not them
I really respect you saying it was unbeaten. This was possibly real life, and these were people who made natural and tragic mistakes. The Ocean is too unpredictable to say it could've been beaten with a guaranteed strategy. Does this movie seem the most professional? No. Does it have to be? No. So with that realistically tragic ending, I can live with it
He isn’t criticizing the decisions made by the real people this film was inspired by, as we can’t even possibly know what decisions they did make while they were stranded. One thing that was found was a note written by one of them which isn’t even included in the film.
I went snorkeling in near Florida at 8 years old. My flippers didn’t fit right and the didn’t have another size so I took them off on the boat since I thought I was a strong swimmer. Apparently the current was quite strong because after 5 minutes I look up and the boat that was anchored was now quite a ways away. I started swimming as hard as I could and screaming but I just kept getting farther away. Luckily someone heard me and a scuba instructor came out and pulled me back in. Let me tell you, watching the boat you’re supposed to go home on get farther and farther away as you swim the best you can, slowly losing energy to the point you can barely move your legs and arms was absolutely terrifying. Not to mention the thing I was following and looking at while snorkeling was a bull shark.
Yeah, I never would wish that on anyone. My worst fear is the ocean anyways because the land is primarily our home and the ocean is a different world your stepping in full of big bad creatures, cold water, current, hypothermia. But also not to say you got extremely lucky and I hope you counted your blessings and shoutout to the person who heard you God bless.
@@zain1m107 Most deep sea predators won't actively hunted humans and will avoid us. Although there was tiger shark that was cut open that had a suit of armor in its stomach, probably a radical story behind that one🤷♂️ Honestly I only really understand people's fear of the ocean when it comes to some of the deep sea school bus sized squids that are out there. Even then I wish we knew more about those, awesomely terrifying creatures.
@@tacticalflashlight1216 Yeah, same here. I had a buddy I played little league soccer with get pulled out by a riptide and unfortunately did not make it. You take a risk when you venture out into open water. I'm taking steps to conquer that fear though, we didn't evolve to be outstanding swimmers but that doesn't mean we can't experience the beauty it holds.

Also Hollywood not getting rl facts straight- after seeing the utter mess that is LA Content Creators, I’m concerned LA as a whole seems to lack any grip on reality at all 😭

This movie seriously terrified me and was the main reason I turned down a dive trip a few years ago, because all I could think of was being left to die like this due to someone else's incompetence.
I mean it's quite easy to get lost in the ocean and i know it from a personal experience.In 2019 i was on vacation in Greece and strong wind had carried away our beachball in to the ocean so i started swiming after it and by the time i reached it i was already 3 kilometars away from the shore.
I have to be honest, the scariest way to die for me has always been drowning. I have read about people who have near drowned saying it was almost peaceful, but it scared the crap out of me. When driving near bodies of water I even roll down the car windows so I have an escape route if I went off the road into the water. It’s THAT prominent in my mind. Don’t get me wrong, other ways to die sound horrible. Really horrible. But drowning remains the scariest in my eyes.
It is actually real peaceful I remember when I was young I was at my pool I almost died multiple times like was down in the pool and I didn't feel any pain so it's probably the 2nd best way to die
I think burning alive would be the worst. I’ve heard from people the “best” way to burn alive is to basically “drown” in the flames. Granted not experts but when you are on fire the fire burns the oxygen so fast that you die from lack of oxygen before the actual burns kill you. Atleast with water once you take that first lungful you pass out.
@@holylettuce4730 True, but it also depends on where you are. Burning alive is worse in a general sense but getting stranded in the middle of the ocean, realizing that no one is going to find me only to drown and be lost at sea is more psychologically horrifying.
Normally these videos are just for a good laugh or to see neat information. As someone genuinely afraid of open water and made more afraid by this film I'm thankful for this movie as it helped it seem less likely to go completely wrong and its comforting to know there are so many safety protocols to combat such a nightmarish situation. Thank you very much. If you do the sequel the best tip is not to go drinking on a yacht with your friends.

@@mrjibrhanjamalkhan2144 well after watching the video it was way simpler that I expected, idk, I was waiting for some really really crazy stuff, and it's interesting to me, because I live in an island precisely in the Caribbean and go to dive regularly so I wanted to see some idk escaping rip currents, bare hands fishing tactics shenanigans and stuff like that.
Sailor and diver here in Bahamas, pretty accurate info in this video, good job. Btw, shark attacks on spearfishermen aren't counted in statistics, as they're considered "prevoked". There were at least two that I know of here in Bahamas this year.
It's a small, and clearly incompetent, diving operation. It's not murder, but it is at least negligence. By doing...basically anything they could've known that the couple were gone. They should've had at least a bit of safety equipment (A whistle, a DSMB) as Nerd mentioned.
Actually according to the director who made this film, the only thing similar about this from the true story is being left behind. They really didn’t want to do the real story because not much is known about what happened to them after they got left. And For the real people, they were 20 miles from land and it was in Australia doing a dive at the Great Barrier Reef. The tour boat that left them purposely didn’t report them missing until 2 days had passed. It was during the summer so it would of been hot and the place they were at there wouldn’t have been many ships going through. So it is speculated that they most likely dehydrated or became hypothermic being out there 2 days and could of died from that. Some of their gear later washed up on the beach but no signs of shark attack. Unfortunately they were never found. And the tour got sued big time for it, because they didn’t do a proper head count and didn’t report them missing when they first noticed their passports and things left on the boat the following morning. It’s a very sad tragedy but this movie is fiction and not based on them. The Directer and his wife first heard about it and wanted to make a movie with this kind of scenario but didn’t want to use the real tragedy because they felt it was disrespectful to the family and not much is known what actually occurred after they were left.

@@donovanwick9278 Yeah you really got to be a fucked up evil person to purposely not report someone missing even if you were scared that you fucked up and missed counted or whatever. I reviewed several articles on this tragedy and the directors of the movie. It’s similar to the extent with the boat just leaving without getting a proper head count. I believe the couple went further from the group to explore the barrier reef bc they had some experience in diving ( not sure how much it’s been a minute since I looked at it) but the workers ( who I think either owned the company or were something high in it) saw the couple’s passports and belongings but just kept quiet for two days ( I guess in their minds hoping they would die so they wouldn’t get sued or in trouble bc that’s the only reason you wouldn’t report right away) But after they were left no one is really sure what happened only theories. Like I said before it was hot and their stuff was found washed up but no signs of any shark or animal attack. So the best guess is they both dehydrated or became hyperthermic from being in the water all that time. ( But I agree it’s messed up on the part of the tour company and they should have been at least charged with negligent manslaughter or something bc they left them and didn’t report it immediately. I went on a mission trip a few years back to Honduras and we went snorkeling on our day off. Now, we had set up this counting system for the whole trip earlier but it really came in handy out on the tour. We all were assigned a number and when told too we counted off in order until everyone was present. If we didn't hear a number we recounted again, and if we still didn't get a response then we looked around for the missing person. Or if we got confused during the counting we started over so that it was absolutely clear everyone was there and we weren't leaving anyone behind. So on the boat not only did the tour guides get a good head count while we were sitting down, my group also had our counting system. And another thing the guides did was they waited to count until we were getting ready to leave and sitting down, then no one could get marked as returned and leave again without being noticed like in the movie. And then obviously my group counted off to double check. I felt this system worked well and something like that as Nerd said definitely is what could have saved the couple.
I was one of the adults that went with a group of students to Ecuador. We had that same counting system, and you're right, it worked very well. The only problem was one of the men we worked with there, the one that lived in the country and made a living hosting these types of trips, thought it would be funny to shout out random numbers whenever we tried to do a count. When I met with my boss after the trip I recommended that we not work with this particular person again. After what I reported - the counting along with a few other examples of a generally slack attitude - he agreed with me and we went with someone else after that. This person considered himself just a laid back, fun-loving guy; but he didn't know when to stop and be the professional. If what you are trying to do is make sure you aren't going to leave a minor lost and alone in a foreign country where they don't speak the language, that is not the time to be messing around. If you take a job that gives you that level of responsibility for other people's safety then you need to stay on your toes all the time to make absolutely sure you do it right. That's why what happened with the diving company here is so mind boggling.

One of the local leaders we had was a very fun joke loving person too but unlike your guy, he knew when it was appropriate to joke around and when something was important. And yeah it really is why the whole system in the movie is mind boggling. And what's even worse is that it's based off a real event and the real couple was missing for two days without being noticed. Systems like both ours that seem really basic can actually save lives sometimes.

Once I was on a boat with a group of friends, we got to our location and me and 2 other friends (no life jackets) jumped in the water. Next thing we knew the current was taking us away half a mile, we yelled for our friends but they were so preoccupied having fun and never realized we were far away. Luckily a boat was also passing and saw the struggle and picked us up. By then we were to tired fighting the current. Moral of the story, make sure the people you are with are competent and dont assume the water is safe cause it looks safe on the surface

i went diving in the same place with my family, we had one family member on the boat at all times and rotated who it was, so if they did try to leave without us, the family member on the boat would have noticed immediately and stopped them. so it is possible, and fun.
As someone who loves cruises, this is terrifying. I can remember being on the balcony and seeing nothing but water in front, and to both sides of me, no matter how hard I looked I couldn't see any structure or land in the distance. It's even worse at night, to say it's "pitch dark", would be an understatement.
I remember watching this back in the day. The characters were so stupid, it felt like a relief when it was over. My utmost sympathy for the people this is based on, no idea what led to their ordeal. These two, however, the story is a bit different.
@@ninjaf00t Yes, that’s basically what I said. Other than that I’m not sure what else to expect from two random people though, it’s hard to imagine most people doing much better aside from losing track of buoy which was a sign of extreme ignorance as to basically the only good survival method.
By far the biggest mistake was made by the diving guide that left them behind. I know that everyone makes mistakes, but taking two people out into the ocean and losing them the way they did is flat out criminal negligence.
When I was a kid, I was actually left behind like this. I was at a week long summer camp, and we went rafting. It was an all day kinda thing. We finally landed after compeleating the river. We met with another group who was just finishing as well. I went a little ways away, looking for frogs (I know, right?) as everyone was just chilling and relaxing after being on the river for so long. eventually I looked back and they were gone. An adult with the other group was like hey were you with them? And I said yeah and he said they l just left, we can take you back and I agreed, being a little kid. Now looking back I could easily have been kidnapped / murdered, but i was a kid, so I just agreed. they took me back to the camp where the counclers were just starting to realize their fuck up. They were pretty mad at me. But now thinking about it, it's entirely their fault and they were just pissed they nearly got fucked for their screw up.

@@ok0_0 I'm more afraid of long open bodies of water and things coming out of the water or darkness under water hiding things. So in a way, Subnautica terrifies me more than actual horror content.
@@silenceundying A subnautica fan! I also have thalassophobia . I believe I got it when I almost got caught in a riptide at the beach when i was a kid. I felt the current pulling me out, but someone saw, and they threw a fishing line out so I could grab on, and he yanked me out of the water. I was very lucky he was there, and thankful. Never went into the ocean after that. As for subnautica, I played it all the way through many times, and it's my favourite survival game of all time. First time I encountered a leviathan, I felt tingles all over my body, and mainly in my head. I believe that was adrenaline, and that was an experience! A good experience :D.
@@infinitedeath1384 The Leviathan was the single most awful thing for me. You can go out of bounds in the pitch dark and one attacks, and that absolutely messed me up.

I remember me and my older sister we’re awaiting this movie in our tv, on a channel I forgot because we were avid horror fanatics as children. We were very excited because we thought it was gonna be more like Jaws where there’d be a killer shark as the main antagonist of the film. We watched it and although it left us disappointed only because our expectations were wrong, the movie utterly disturbed both of us because of how seemingly helpless the two of them are, and how hopeless the situation looked for them. The ending was also very disturbing to me as a kid. The lady just lost all hope, and ended committing suicide when she could’ve possibly gotten rescued. This was my first time hearing about suicide as well.
@@Luis-oy3et when you’re a 5 year old child, there’s a lot of things you don’t really understand. I’m used to action films where good guys will kill bad guys, and I always thought jaws was the same, but only with the roles reversed. The concept of suicide was very new to me. The thought that you’re willing to end your life just to stop pain or suffering was something I couldn’t comprehend before.
Something like this happened to my parents on a trip!Except they were in a tour and the boat wasn’t tied properly so it floated away while they were diving. So their entire boat tourist group (including my parents that didn’t have diving experience) had to stay floating in the sea by a buoy for like two hours while the guide boarded the other boat from the tour and came back with another boat. The movie came out some years later and needless to say my mom doesn’t like watching it bc back then she was still scared the guide wouldn’t come back.
Being stranded in the ocean like this is a big fear. There's a vast world beneath the surface none of us are prepared for. I went to Portugal and did a dolphin watching trip, and one of the other tourists asked about snorkeling and diving in the region. The guide said there's guided trips around the islands that were close to the coast, but they don't do open water diving because the current and water was unpredictable.
this is fun to watch since my first scuba trip was only a few days ago, AND in the caribbean! luckily we were only a small group and our instructor kept us in view the whole time, I wouldn't even dream of going on a dive without proper safety measures and preparation from the instructor

It's the movies where it's super possible and believable that are the most horrifying. I mean, aside from the couple that inspired this movie to begin with, how many people go missing out there in any sort of wilderness with absolutely no chances given to them? Holding out for the best possible hope of being found, suffering for so long for it to not pay off?

@@morgan1309 I’m sure, just that it was narrated as a valid plot point, or maybe I’m taking things too literally, I just thought because it was based on a true story, the fact that jellyfish were included must have meant they were important to that part of the story, and moon jelly’s have physical similarity to a lot of other clear jellies that actually do sting, so I’m sure they could have called them those species as opposed to a completely harmless one and create more confusion; again though that might just be me being too literal, sorry if so.

This movie is terrifying , "based on true events " became common to every horror movie nowdays but here is different , this situation is exactly what happend in real life and its pretty plausible to happen to anyone else . And also its a pretty realistic movie compared to the other horror movies .
Not enough movies was shot in Mini DV it’s very low budget looking but really works in movies like this that tries to tell a terrifying story it makes it looks like news footage and makes it feels a little more authentic

Great video! Regarding the whistle - there is actually a special piece of equipment for divers. not sure what is it called in english, but its a whistle that gets connected to your tank, and because of the pressure you can call for help much much louder (extremely loud) and you dont tire yourself. You just press a button.

7:08 Okay, this man is officially on my “WTF, dude?!” list here. Boarding the wrong boat is far better than ending up stranded in the middle of the ocean!!! Yes, this could have been prevented in the first place with a proper checklist for the people diving, but does this guy have no sense of personal safety? I guess the movie had to move the plot forward with this, but /still/. Trying to get to the boat and not making it as it becomes too far away is one thing; not even attempting to get to it because “Oh, it would be more trouble than it’s worth if it’s the wrong boat” is another, and that line of reasoning is just ridiculous on top of that. Getting to safety is always worth the trouble if there even is any! I could understand the reasoning of “If the boat is too far away to swim to without losing it, it’ll be a waste of energy”, but the reasoning of “It might be the wrong boat” is just a no. This one line in this movie just absolutely baffles me.
My lady and I just visited Bahamas and went diving. I made her watch this before we went and I made friends with our diving guide, such good friends in fact we text and play ps5 together 😂 that was a year ago. Thanks nerdist
Please watch the "I shouldn't be alive" series, if you haven't already, really amazing, and there's an episode just like this only in the episode the people were strangers I believe, and they were found. These stories are all true told by all who lived through it.
I’ve done many diving trips and Australia has to be one of the safest places to dive. After this incident diving shops implemented strict safety protocols so it doesn’t happen again. I went to this dive trip along the great barrier reef. After each dive the crew would check the ENTIRE boat and call for your name (even if you didn’t go diving just in case) until they could see you. Somehow they still managed to lose a diver who got caught in a strong current, luckily he had a gps beacon in his pocket. Still it took them 3 hours to find him
While watching this I was thinking how could the crew be this neglecting and little awareness. To then keep reminding myself that this actually happened to a couple frightens me.
I agree, even if it was 20 ppl(and didn't Mr Nerd say the couple stayed to themselves)they would've at least been categorized as "The Couple Who Stayed To Themselves" or possibly known as "The Anti-Socials or Stuck Up Couple" something? Given how a lot of folks are these days, if u act like u don't want to be bothered they usually get the hint and leave u alone or some even think "Well, as long as it's not happening to me?" but if I already started seeing how our instructor wasn't doing things correctly/by the book, I wouldn't have trusted the situation enough to dip a toe in the water? Mr Nerd is right tho, at least try to make a good enough rapport with the ppl who seem cool?

Being lost at sea seems for me to be a relative realistic situation, depending where you live/ have a camping trip to/ have vacation. irl the captain of the ship was put on trial for manslaughter but acquitted. The company, however, was massively fined for negligence and forced out of business. This whole thing also lead to much stricter government regulations on diving companies etc.
As someone who recently got his diving license, I can confirm. During the theoretical part, there was a whole section about what to look out for, e.g. that you should get suspicious if the boat doesn’t call everyone out by name, and if you join a trip last minute you should make sure that you are on that list

Essential dive gear I take to every dive is : - a dive torch or dive light (not just for safety but also to see fish that hides under a rock) It's easy as that to get attention from boats if night comes (otherwise it would be almost impossible to be spotted at night) - a whistle that was already attached to my bcd as I bought it (the bcd is the thing that inflates to get positive buoyancy and holds your stuff together) - a smb (surface marker buoye) which the OP called a noodle or so :D It's a long buoye that sticks about a meter out of the water. So you're much easier to spot than with just your head sticking a few cm/inches out of the water. - Next I'll get a kind of knife. But not a normal knife like the guy in the movie. I'll get myself a Eezycut Trilobit because what is even more unlikely to happen than being let alone at the ocean is being attacked by a shark. With that knife you can easily cut off peoples dive gear in an emergency without the danger of harming them and it's also safer to cut people out of fishing line without harming them or damaging their dive gear. That is stuff that almost every diver has or is relative cheap to get. (I need a new smb by the way because mine isn't very good coloured anymore due to sunlight and salt water) Other safety stuff you can get for scuba diving: - a horn that goes at your medium pressure hose which is normally connected to your bcd. That gives a very loud sound to get attention by boats (louder than the whistle) - The dive operator should have a tank with medical oxygene at the boat. Because more likely that this event is having to deal with decompression illness (which won't happen if you're properly trained and stay into your limits (which you can expend by taking courses and learn how to expend them)) The GPS-Becon that he mentioned is too expensive for a such an unlikely event for me. And with all the other gear I have I don't think that I actually need that. But that would be the very best tool in a situation like this. Scuba diving is an extremly safe sport if you do it as you learn in your first courses. You learn about decompression and basic emergency procedures in your very first dive course (Open Water Diver) I really enjoyed the video even if I already knew all of that. You have done nice research :) (Once last thing: It is called fins not flippers :D)
Oh and I can recommend the channel "DIVE TALK" if you want to see two scuba diving experts (both cave divers and one of them is an instructor). They do reactions to actual footage of accidents at scuba diving and giving advice what to do in such scenerios and what is done right or wrong in the videos.

Awesome video. Being stranded at sea is one of my worst fears. A few things, punching or stabbing a shark isn't likely to go in your favor. Poking it in the eye is a more trusted method. But really, sharks almost never attack. When they bite us, it is either out of curiosity or mistaken identity, which is why most people survive shark encounters - as the shark tends to stop once it has realized what we are. That said, the wound might kill you if you can't get medical attention. But I'd honestly be more scared of the jellyfish. One touch from a box jellyfish and you're dead in minutes.

I personally think being stranded at sea is lot more scary than being lost in the forest. Think about it, you're not in your element, all predators have a giant advantage and you have to use energy to even stay afloat not to forget hypothermia. In contrast to the forest were you atleast could make a shelter and fire if you have basic survival skills. This is alot more terrifying.
At least in a forest you could build fire, shelter, maybe a long sharp stick as a weapon, you can eat plants and drink from a stream etc What are you supposed to do for food, water, shelter etc if you’re in the middle of the ocean?
At least on land you have SOME resources. Limited sure but it’s more than what you have in the water.
Survival chance in forest is higher. You have to be creative to survive in a forest. But ocean oh boy. It's so scary you will run out of oxygen energy and become thirsty and hungry. You don't know what's beneath you. And oceans are so deep.
Very true. Like, literally your only chance of survival in the ocean is if someone finds you. And they have to find you within like, 3 days _if_ you have something keeping you afloat. And probably only hours to a day if you don't have a lifevest or something.
In a forest you at least have a chance of finding a creak or river before dying of dehydration.
Sea predators don't give a fuck about divers. As long as you are not flailing like an idiot or bleeding badly, they will ignore you. Hypothermia will get you within 1 night if you are in the water.
Yeah, if I’m lost in the Forrest I probably have a bag of equipment, a couple of guns, some food, water, radio, etc. Even without that, at least I won’t drown.
This whole thing was a logistical nightmare.
Imagine going skydiving and getting the safety talk while in the airplane.
Whether your going above or below- all safety protocols should be done on land with everyone attentive.
You do it twice (if boat diving) once on land do go over detailed plans and procedures and again on the boat before gearing up

The fact that no one noticed the missing tanks was something that always bothered me about the real life story as well.
If you run a dive boat are you seriously not going to notice that 2 of your expensive oxygen tanks are missing and start asking questions about why? They're not exactly the kind of thing someone can steal by sticking it in their backpack.
If i ran a dive boat i wouldn't notice missing oxygen tanks. An oxygen tank would kill anyone breathing from it. I might notice my air tanks missing though!
@@awesomewin1337 yes it’s technically a misnomer to call a dive tank an oxygen tank but most people don’t really care unless your using a different gas mixture but pure oxygen won’t kill you unless your breathing it for a ridiculously long time O2 tanks are used in basically any hospital and believe it or not is part of the first aid treatment for many problems like the Bends and pulmonary edema so any respectable dive boat would have O2 tanks with there first aid kit

I really respect you saying it was unbeaten. This was possibly real life, and these were people who made natural and tragic mistakes. The Ocean is too unpredictable to say it could've been beaten with a guaranteed strategy. Does this movie seem the most professional? No. Does it have to be? No. So with that realistically tragic ending, I can live with it

I went snorkeling in near Florida at 8 years old. My flippers didn’t fit right and the didn’t have another size so I took them off on the boat since I thought I was a strong swimmer. Apparently the current was quite strong because after 5 minutes I look up and the boat that was anchored was now quite a ways away. I started swimming as hard as I could and screaming but I just kept getting farther away. Luckily someone heard me and a scuba instructor came out and pulled me back in. Let me tell you, watching the boat you’re supposed to go home on get farther and farther away as you swim the best you can, slowly losing energy to the point you can barely move your legs and arms was absolutely terrifying. Not to mention the thing I was following and looking at while snorkeling was a bull shark.

Yeah, I never would wish that on anyone. My worst fear is the ocean anyways because the land is primarily our home and the ocean is a different world your stepping in full of big bad creatures, cold water, current, hypothermia. But also not to say you got extremely lucky and I hope you counted your blessings and shoutout to the person who heard you God bless.
@@zain1m107 Most deep sea predators won't actively hunted humans and will avoid us. Although there was tiger shark that was cut open that had a suit of armor in its stomach, probably a radical story behind that one🤷♂️ Honestly I only really understand people's fear of the ocean when it comes to some of the deep sea school bus sized squids that are out there. Even then I wish we knew more about those, awesomely terrifying creatures.

@@tacticalflashlight1216 Yeah, same here. I had a buddy I played little league soccer with get pulled out by a riptide and unfortunately did not make it. You take a risk when you venture out into open water. I'm taking steps to conquer that fear though, we didn't evolve to be outstanding swimmers but that doesn't mean we can't experience the beauty it holds.

I mean it's quite easy to get lost in the ocean and i know it from a personal experience.In 2019 i was on vacation in Greece and strong wind had carried away our beachball in to the ocean so i started swiming after it and by the time i reached it i was already 3 kilometars away from the shore.

I have to be honest, the scariest way to die for me has always been drowning. I have read about people who have near drowned saying it was almost peaceful, but it scared the crap out of me. When driving near bodies of water I even roll down the car windows so I have an escape route if I went off the road into the water. It’s THAT prominent in my mind.
Don’t get me wrong, other ways to die sound horrible. Really horrible. But drowning remains the scariest in my eyes.
It is actually real peaceful I remember when I was young I was at my pool I almost died multiple times like was down in the pool and I didn't feel any pain so it's probably the 2nd best way to die
I think burning alive would be the worst. I’ve heard from people the “best” way to burn alive is to basically “drown” in the flames. Granted not experts but when you are on fire the fire burns the oxygen so fast that you die from lack of oxygen before the actual burns kill you. Atleast with water once you take that first lungful you pass out.
@@holylettuce4730 True, but it also depends on where you are. Burning alive is worse in a general sense but getting stranded in the middle of the ocean, realizing that no one is going to find me only to drown and be lost at sea is more psychologically horrifying.
The worst way I can imagine dying is being flayed. However I did, I want it to be quick. Flaying is a slow, torturous process of excruciating pain.

Normally these videos are just for a good laugh or to see neat information. As someone genuinely afraid of open water and made more afraid by this film I'm thankful for this movie as it helped it seem less likely to go completely wrong and its comforting to know there are so many safety protocols to combat such a nightmarish situation. It's a small, and clearly incompetent, diving operation. It's not murder, but it is at least negligence. By doing...basically anything they could've known that the couple were gone. They should've had at least a bit of safety equipment (A whistle, a DSMB) as Nerd mentioned.

Actually according to the director who made this film, the only thing similar about this from the true story is being left behind. They really didn’t want to do the real story because not much is known about what happened to them after they got left.
And For the real people, they were 20 miles from land and it was in Australia doing a dive at the Great Barrier Reef. The tour boat that left them purposely didn’t report them missing until 2 days had passed. It was during the summer so it would of been hot and the place they were at there wouldn’t have been many ships going through. So it is speculated that they most likely dehydrated or became hypothermic being out there 2 days and could of died from that.
Some of their gear later washed up on the beach but no signs of shark attack. Unfortunately they were never found. And the tour got sued big time for it, because they didn’t do a proper head count and didn’t report them missing when they first noticed their passports and things left on the boat the following morning.
It’s a very sad tragedy but this movie is fiction and not based on them. The Directer and his wife first heard about it and wanted to make a movie with this kind of scenario but didn’t want to use the real tragedy because they felt it was disrespectful to the family and not much is known what actually occurred after they were left.

I reviewed several articles on this tragedy and the directors of the movie. It’s similar to the extent with the boat just leaving without getting a proper head count. I believe the couple went further from the group to explore the barrier reef bc they had some experience in diving ( not sure how much it’s been a minute since I looked at it) but the workers ( who I think either owned the company or were something high in it) saw the couple’s passports and belongings but just kept quiet for two days ( I guess in their minds hoping they would die so they wouldn’t get sued or in trouble bc that’s the only reason you wouldn’t report right away)
But after they were left no one is really sure what happened only theories. Like I said before it was hot and their stuff was found washed up but no signs of any shark or animal attack. So the best guess is they both dehydrated or became hyperthermic from being in the water all that time.
( But I agree it’s messed up on the part of the tour company and they should have been at least charged with negligent manslaughter or something bc they left them and didn’t report it immediately. And I respect the directors for not trying to really base the movie about them bc it would be hard for the families especially when no one knows the truth of how they died and their deaths weren’t made into a mockery or horror show for money.

I went on a mission trip a few years back to Honduras and we went snorkeling on our day off. Now, we had set up this counting system for the whole trip earlier but it really came in handy out on the tour. We all were assigned a number and when told too we counted off in order until everyone was present. If we didn't hear a number we recounted again, and if we still didn't get a response then we looked around for the missing person. Or if we got confused during the counting we started over so that it was absolutely clear everyone was there and we weren't leaving anyone behind. So on the boat not only did the tour guides get a good head count while we were sitting down, my group also had our counting system. And another thing the guides did was they waited to count until we were getting ready to leave and sitting down, then no one could get marked as returned and leave again without being noticed like in the movie. And then obviously my group counted off to double check. I felt this system worked well and something like that as Nerd said definitely is what could have saved the couple.
I was one of the adults that went with a group of students to Ecuador. We had that same counting system, and you're right, it worked very well. The only problem was one of the men we worked with there, the one that lived in the country and made a living hosting these types of trips, thought it would be funny to shout out random numbers whenever we tried to do a count. When I met with my boss after the trip I recommended that we not work with this particular person again. After what I reported - the counting along with a few other examples of a generally slack attitude - he agreed with me and we went with someone else after that. This person considered himself just a laid back, fun-loving guy; but he didn't know when to stop and be the professional. If what you are trying to do is make sure you aren't going to leave a minor lost and alone in a foreign country where they don't speak the language, that is not the time to be messing around. If you take a job that gives you that level of responsibility for other people's safety then you need to stay on your toes all the time to make absolutely sure you do it right. That's why what happened with the diving company here is so mind boggling.

One of the local leaders we had was a very fun joke loving person too but unlike your guy, he knew when it was appropriate to joke around and when something was important. And yeah it really is why the whole system in the movie is mind boggling. And what's even worse is that it's based off a real event and the real couple was missing for two days without being noticed. Systems like both ours that seem really basic can actually save lives sometimes.

Once I was on a boat with a group of friends, we got to our location and me and 2 other friends (no life jackets) jumped in the water. Next thing we knew the current was taking us away half a mile, we yelled for our friends but they were so preoccupied having fun and never realized we were far away. Luckily a boat was also passing and saw the struggle and picked us up. By then we were to tired fighting the current. Moral of the story, make sure the people you are with are competent and dont assume the water is safe cause it looks safe on the surface

i went diving in the same place with my family, we had one family member on the boat at all times and rotated who it was, so if they did try to leave without us, the family member on the boat would have noticed immediately and stopped them. so it is possible, and fun.

As someone who loves cruises, this is terrifying. I can remember being on the balcony and seeing nothing but water in front, and to both sides of me, no matter how hard I looked I couldn't see any structure or land in the distance. It's even worse at night, to say it's "pitch dark", would be an understatement.
Stop doing cruises. They are fucking awful for the environment
I remember watching this back in the day. The characters were so stupid, it felt like a relief when it was over. My utmost sympathy for the people this is based on, no idea what led to their ordeal. These two, however, the story is a bit different.
The only serious mistake was not rushing for the buoy. Everything else was pretty natural.

By far the biggest mistake was made by the diving guide that left them behind. I know that everyone makes mistakes, but taking two people out into the ocean and losing them the way they did is flat out criminal negligence.
To be fair not having a whistle or anything is the dive guids fault nothing theyvod have done would really save them, proff real life
When I was a kid, I was actually left behind like this. I was at a week long summer camp, and we went rafting. It was an all day kinda thing. We finally landed after compeleating the river. We met with another group who was just finishing as well. I went a little ways away, looking for frogs (I know, right?) as everyone was just chilling and relaxing after being on the river for so long. eventually I looked back and they were gone. An adult with the other group was like hey were you with them? And I said yeah and he said they l just left, we can take you back and I agreed, being a little kid. Now looking back I could easily have been kidnapped / murdered, but i was a kid, so I just agreed. they took me back to the camp where the counclers were just starting to realize their fuck up. They were pretty mad at me. But now thinking about it, it's entirely their fault and they were just pissed they nearly got fucked for their screw up.

@@silenceundying A subnautica fan! I also have thalassophobia . I believe I got it when I almost got caught in a riptide at the beach when i was a kid. I felt the current pulling me out, but someone saw, and they threw a fishing line out so I could grab on, and he yanked me out of the water. I was very lucky he was there, and thankful. Never went into the ocean after that. As for subnautica, I played it all the way through many times, and it's my favourite survival game of all time. First time I encountered a leviathan, I felt tingles all over my body, and mainly in my head. I believe that was adrenaline, and that was an experience! A good experience :D.

I remember me and my older sister we’re awaiting this movie in our tv, on a channel I forgot because we were avid horror fanatics as children. We were very excited because we thought it was gonna be more like Jaws where there’d be a killer shark as the main antagonist of the film. We watched it and although it left us disappointed only because our expectations were wrong, the movie utterly disturbed both of us because of how seemingly helpless the two of them are, and how hopeless the situation looked for them. The ending was also very disturbing to me as a kid. The lady just lost all hope, and ended committing suicide when she could’ve possibly gotten rescued. This was my first time hearing about suicide as well.

I’m used to action films where good guys will kill bad guys, and I always thought jaws was the same, but only with the roles reversed. The concept of suicide was very new to me. The thought that you’re willing to end your life just to stop pain or suffering was something I couldn’t comprehend before.

Something like this happened to my parents on a trip!Except they were in a tour and the boat wasn’t tied properly so it floated away while they were diving. So their entire boat tourist group (including my parents that didn’t have diving experience) had to stay floating in the sea by a buoy for like two hours while the guide boarded the other boat from the tour and came back with another boat. The movie came out some years later and needless to say my mom doesn’t like watching it bc back then she was still scared the guide wouldn’t come back.
Being stranded in the ocean like this is a big fear. There's a vast world beneath the surface none of us are prepared for.
I went to Portugal and did a dolphin watching trip, and one of the other tourists asked about snorkeling and diving in the region. The guide said there's guided trips around the islands that were close to the coast, but they don't do open water diving because the current and water was unpredictable.

this is fun to watch since my first scuba trip was only a few days ago, AND in the caribbean! luckily we were only a small group and our instructor kept us in view the whole time, I wouldn't even dream of going on a dive without proper safety measures and preparation from the instructor

Found the jellyfish scene weird- moon jellies can’t sting humans. Their sting isn’t strong enough to penetrate human skin, let alone diving suits.

@@morgan1309 I’m sure, just that it was narrated as a valid plot point, or maybe I’m taking things too literally, I just thought because it was based on a true story, the fact that jellyfish were included must have meant they were important to that part of the story, and moon jelly’s have physical similarity to a lot of other clear jellies that actually do sting, so I’m sure they could have called them those species as opposed to a completely harmless one and create more confusion; again though that might just be me being too literal, sorry if so.

This movie is terrifying , "based on true events " became common to every horror movie nowdays but here is different , this situation is exactly what happend in real life and its pretty plausible to happen to anyone else . And also its a pretty realistic movie compared to the other horror movies .
Not enough movies was shot in Mini DV it’s very low budget looking but really works in movies like this that tries to tell a terrifying story it makes it looks like news footage and makes it feels a little more authentic
The TH-cam channel Mr. Ballen has a great video about the true story. It’s so incredibly sad but he tells the story (and many others) in such a great fashion.
Great video! Regarding the whistle - there is actually a special piece of equipment for divers. not sure what is it called in english, but its a whistle that gets connected to your tank, and because of the pressure you can call for help much much louder (extremely loud) and you dont tire yourself. You just press a button.

As someone who is incredibly scared of the ocean this movie was my worst nightmare put on screen and blew that slight probabilty of me conquering that fear outta my system.

It is funny but untrue. American engineers and scientists use the metric system, not Imperial. So in reality, imperial has not gone to the moon.

7:08 Okay, this man is officially on my “WTF, dude?!” list here. Boarding the wrong boat is far better than ending up stranded in the middle of the ocean!!! Yes, this could have been prevented in the first place with a proper checklist for the people diving, but does this guy have no sense of personal safety? I guess the movie had to move the plot forward with this, but /still/. Trying to get to the boat and not making it as it becomes too far away is one thing; not even attempting to get to it because “Oh, it would be more trouble than it’s worth if it’s the wrong boat” is another, and that line of reasoning is just ridiculous on top of that. Getting to safety is always worth the trouble if there even is any! I could understand the reasoning of “If the boat is too far away to swim to without losing it, it’ll be a waste of energy”, but the reasoning of “It might be the wrong boat” is just a no. This one line in this movie just absolutely baffles me.
My lady and I just visited Bahamas and went diving. I made her watch this before we went and I made friends with our diving guide, such good friends in fact we text and play ps5 together 😂 that was a year ago. Thanks nerdist
Please watch the "I shouldn't be alive" series, if you haven't already, really amazing, and there's an episode just like this only in the episode the people were strangers I believe, and they were found. These stories are all true told by all who lived through it.
I’ve done many diving trips and Australia has to be one of the safest places to dive. After this incident diving shops implemented strict safety protocols so it doesn’t happen again. I went to this dive trip along the great barrier reef. After each dive the crew would check the ENTIRE boat and call for your name (even if you didn’t go diving just in case) until they could see you. Somehow they still managed to lose a diver who got caught in a strong current, luckily he had a gps beacon in his pocket. Still it took them 3 hours to find him

Given how a lot of folks are these days, if u act like u don't want to be bothered they usually get the hint and leave u alone or some even think "Well, as long as it's not happening to me?" but if I already started seeing how our instructor wasn't doing things correctly/by the book, I wouldn't have trusted the situation enough to dip a toe in the water? Being lost at sea seems for me to be a relative realistic situation, depending where you live/ have a camping trip to/ have vacation.
I myself am not a good swimmer (no arm muscles, which is gonna get me killed, I know. But at least I am a good runner? XD), so I think this videp couöd be in hand,, should I ever be out in the open water.

irl the captain of the ship was put on trial for manslaughter but acquitted. The company, however, was massively fined for negligence and forced out of business. This whole thing also lead to much stricter government regulations on diving companies etc.
As someone who recently got his diving license, I can confirm. During the theoretical part, there was a whole section about what to look out for, e.g. that you should get suspicious if the boat doesn’t call everyone out by name, and if you join a trip last minute you should make sure that you are on that list

Bruh; For a first dive they shouldn’t be going to 18m. Maybe 6-10 at most. This has got to be the most dodgy diving operation in the Caribbean.
You get certified to 18m in your open water course….
Essential dive gear I take to every dive is :
- a dive torch or dive light (not just for safety but also to see fish that hides under a rock) It's easy as that to get attention from boats if night comes (otherwise it would be almost impossible to be spotted at night)
- a whistle that was already attached to my bcd as I bought it (the bcd is the thing that inflates to get positive buoyancy and holds your stuff together)
- a smb (surface marker buoye) which the OP called a noodle or so :D
It's a long buoye that sticks about a meter out of the water. So you're much easier to spot than with just your head sticking a few cm/inches out of the water.
- Next I'll get a kind of knife. But not a normal knife like the guy in the movie. I'll get myself a Eezycut Trilobit because what is even more unlikely to happen than being let alone at the ocean is being attacked by a shark. With that knife you can easily cut off peoples dive gear in an emergency without the danger of harming them and it's also safer to cut people out of fishing line without harming them or damaging their dive gear.
That is stuff that almost every diver has or is relative cheap to get. (I need a new smb by the way because mine isn't very good coloured anymore due to sunlight and salt water)
Other safety stuff you can get for scuba diving:
- a horn that goes at your medium pressure hose which is normally connected to your bcd. That gives a very loud sound to get attention by boats (louder than the whistle)
- The dive operator should have a tank with medical oxygene at the boat. Because more likely that this event is having to deal with decompression illness (which won't happen if you're properly trained and stay into your limits (which you can expend by taking courses and learn how to expend them))
The GPS-Becon that he mentioned is too expensive for a such an unlikely event for me. And with all the other gear I have I don't think that I actually need that.
But that would be the very best tool in a situation like this.
Scuba diving is an extremly safe sport if you do it as you learn in your first courses. You learn about decompression and basic emergency procedures in your very first dive course (Open Water Diver)
I really enjoyed the video even if I already knew all of that. You have done nice research :)
(Once last thing: It is called fins not flippers :D)
Oh and I can recommend the channel "DIVE TALK" if you want to see two scuba diving experts (both cave divers and one of them is an instructor). They do reactions to actual footage of accidents at scuba diving and giving advice what to do in such scenerios and what is done right or wrong in the videos.
After what I watched last episode I’m scarred by that experience, so I’m hoping this’ll be a good episode

Awesome video. Being stranded at sea is one of my worst fears. A few things, punching or stabbing a shark isn't likely to go in your favor. Poking it in the eye is a more trusted method. But really, sharks almost never attack. When they bite us, it is either out of curiosity or mistaken identity, which is why most people survive shark encounters - as the shark tends to stop once it has realized what we are. That said, the wound might kill you if you can't get medical attention. But I'd honestly be more scared of the jellyfish. One touch from a box jellyfish and you're dead in minutes.
