I remember very well when this song was released…it compelled me to go to the movie by the same name. The film was very sugar sweet, basically a vehicle for Olivia, ELO and the incomparable Gene Kelly dancing on the big screen. A fantasy for sure but worth watching just for the 3 of them. Whole soundtrack is a terrific work of great well crafted pop/rock material and even some swing n jazzy stuff with gr8t instrumentation and lots of strings from music wizzard JEFF..One of my fave albums of all times.I Luv LIVY and i'm also a fan of all ELO's discography from '79"Discovery" album and ever after.
Olivia is one of the top female soloist of modern pop music..One of the rare charismatic cases that she-as her close friend Karen(Carpenter)- had a "stand alone" voice.A voice that don;t even need backing vocals support to sound good enough.She could make it on her own pretty well and her exceptional vocal sound can remain in your memory cause it;s got a unique identity and colour.

Great reaction again! I remember seeing the movie when I was young at the cinema, and we got the album, but there were "scratches" in the vinyl, so on some songs we ended up singing along to the scratches!!! Hahahahahaa! Like in "Magic" it should be "Have to believe we are magic, nothing can stand in our way", but.........we sang "Have to believe........nothing c'aay" So many memories of that time!
I saw Xanadu at the movies with my little sister on the heels of Grease and as a young teen I was smitten with ONJ and couldn’t wait. What struck me as most memorable besides ONJ’s beauty was the soundtrack which prompted me to buy this album even though my parents rejected rock music in our home. The opening song “I’m Alive” hooked me forever as an ELO fan and that was before who I knew who they were. The soundtrack is classic and Olivia Newton John sounds epic on side one and ELO epic on side two. I’m Alive and The Fall are still favorites of mine, along with the commercially released All Over The World and Don’t Walk Away. Also fun fact Xanadu was the only ELO song not sung by mighty Jeff Lynne which was done by ONJ. The movie got bad reviews unfortunately, and Jeff Lynne tried to distance himself from the movie because of it. He even stated no Xanadu song should be released on some greatest hits albums. It’s a shame because every song on side two are some of the best ELO songs ever released. Over the years Xanadu became a cult classic movie and fan favorite and even Jeff Lynne began singing Xanadu himself on tour. That album as a whole is worthy of a full review. I have watched many of your reviews and have a feel for your likes so this is a must. What can we do to make this happen?

I saw Olivia in concert in a smaller venue and she was marvelous. Still beautiful and still sounds great. Also saw ELO in 2019 in large arena. Fantastic concert. Great choice. 👍🌏🙃

I love ONJ!! Her vocals tend to be overlooked and underrated. She has incredible vocal agility and vocal range. I hope at some point you can listen to "Jolene" live from her 1982 concert. Her album tracks of "The Right Moment" and "Big and Strong" also showcase her vocals.
You reacted to “All Over The World”, also on this soundtrack. Xanadu was ELO’s only number one hit in the UK. I normal don’t care for ELO’s more diabetes-inducing sugar pop, but I have a soft spot for this one. A critic once wrote about the song’s pairing, “Jeff Lynne is the wizard and ONJ is the Barbie Doll.” The movie was a infamous bomb and did damage to ELO’s rock n roll credibility and FM radio airplay. The result was the musical departure heard in the Time Album, as Jeff stated in interviews. Jeff had the last laugh, though, but it took several decades. The movie developed a big cult following, and a Broadway musical that incorporated more ELO music was a big Tony Awards nominated hit with it constantly performed worldwide in local theaters to this day.
Xanadu was a roller skating music. You should have watched the video. You missed out on seeing the beautiful Olivia. The movie musical didn't do so well but you get some great songs from it.

I adore both ELO and Olivia Newton-John and there is a Xanadu Soundtrack Album (which I still have on vinyl) and it includes a duet with Olivia & Cliff Richard called "Suddenly" and I highly recommend a listen. Before my voice broke I could sing along with ONJ. Xanadu reached number one when I was 16 and it was the very last song of hers I ever sang along to (the voice broke a few weeks late) so watching your video brought back happy memories. Thank you.
I really liked this movie, but I think if you’re not paying attention you can lose some of the story line. The sound track however was really good. IMO.

I'm not sure how well the movie did, but I'm a huge ELO fan, so I've loved every cut I've ever heard from the movie. Haven't seen the movie, but I might be able to watch it just because of ELO doing all the music. And I agree, there's no mistaking Jeff Lynne's music.

I'm so happy you reviewed this song, Harri. This was a bad movie. However, it gave us this great, great song. Jeff Lynne is one of the greatest songwriters we will ever know; and Olivia Newton-John has the voice of an angel. Together, it was magic. This soundtrack also gave us All Over the World, one of ELO's greatest songs, a joyous song we need today. I wish they had done many albums together. Peace to you, sir.
Half the songs on the soundtrack are ELO's, only this one with ONJ on vocals (she sings in the other half). This soundtrack closes ELO's Disco phase. Jeff's remake of the song years later has more of a rock edge and is pretty cool.
I would label this song and the musical as "guilty pleasures" of mine. But, nope. I let everyone know it is just a bit of delightful controlled chaos. I even saw "Xanadu: On Broadway," which was not afraid to poke fun of itself and the movie. And I second the suggestion of ELO's "I'm Alive" from the soundtrack.

I was a senior in high school class of '81 and I loved this album. The movie interesting lol but the soundtrack was out of this world.

I'm so happy you reviewed this song, Harri. This was a bad movie. However, it gave us this great, great song. Jeff Lynne is one of the greatest songwriters we will ever know; and Olivia Newton-John has the voice of an angel. Together, it was magic. This soundtrack also gave us All Over the World, one of ELO's greatest songs, a joyous song we need today. I wish they had done many albums together.

Half the songs on the soundtrack are ELO's, only this one with ONJ on vocals (she sings in the other half). This soundtrack closes ELO's Disco phase. Jeff's remake of the song years later has more of a rock edge and is pretty cool.
I would label this song and the musical as "guilty pleasures" of mine. But, nope. I let everyone know it is just a bit of delightful controlled chaos. I even saw "Xanadu: On Broadway," which was not afraid to poke fun of itself and the movie. And I second the suggestion of ELO's "I'm Alive" from the soundtrack.

I like this movie way better then Grease. The music was much better. I'm a fan of Gene Kelly. I always loved his movies and this was his last one. Well worth watching Harri! Olivia does a great job in this one too!
I remember going to see this movie at the theater with my sisters when I was 9 or 10. The movie is awful but is still one of my guilty pleasures. Soundtrack is incredible!!
