Just a thought James. It's great that you have your mid handicap golfer reviewing and testing clubs with you. It makes it more real than a pro telling you that this club or that is great etc. How about having a resident senior to do the same thing? There's a lot of us old codgers about, and I think this could be well received.
I'm a mid handicapper, did a gapping session with my coach beginning of season in 2019 and made a chart I keep on my bag. Improved by 5 strokes on handicap by end of season.
Mark, I do the same thing with the towels, and I write them down. I have a small yardage book in my back pocket with all the distances for every 5 yards from 25 to 115 yards. Wow, did that help my short game. I just laser the yardage...for example, 40 yards is a choked Lob Wedge with backswing to the knee...45 yards is a choked Lob Wedge to the thigh, etc. What a difference.
Hi James, I play off 7, I have a fair idea how far I hit my irons. However I've never had a "Gap Test" as such. It's on the list for the year coming. James
I only started learning to play golf in September and have had regular lessons since, had a full bag fitting already (about a week ago) and got a club distance session booked in for march ready for the nice weather (and after more coaching) when i hope to get out on the course regularly. Great video James, they have helped me learn a lot (especially the beginner golfer series!).
Gapping my bag with my skytrak was one of the best things I ever did for my game. Realized that I needed to work on my long irons as they tended to bunch up around 5-6 iron. Also learned how far knockdowns/partial wedges, etc. travel gives me an array of options depending on need.
I did a gapping session alone, just used Trackman at the driving range. Hit 10 to 15 shots with a club and wrote the distance on a paper. Bad shots were not included. I have a handicap 25 and it was very helpfull.
@matty burrows Thx for youre reaction. The putter needs attention, thats a fact. Now i use 3 strokes for putting on every hole, so it counts a lot! The other thing is that i can hit my driver, 3w, and hybrid very far......but not consistent. That also cost a lot of shots. But hé, this is my first year in golf.....so much to learn. 👍
What a lovely silky unhurried swing. I’m off 10 and am 20yds shorter on all clubs. Reckon you can’t wait for next season Mark - sharpen your short game and get James to check the other gap (between your ears) and you’ll be down to 7 easy mate 😉
I have a pretty good handle on my distances. However I always work on what is my best shot to the back of the green. That is if it is 152m to the pin and 160m to the back of the green and my best 6i goes 160m, that is the club to hit. Occasionally I flush it but it's better than being 10m short of the green.
Good insight to distances that video James ,I had a full gapping session in June when I got my new irons, on flightscope ,traditional lofts onJPX 919 tours. Pitching wedge 135.-,7 iron 172 -7 wood 220- driver 274 .My gapping is pretty consistent ,its just my game thats not .
I agree with your comment. How is mark a 14 handicap?! He strikes the ball in the studio like a 7-8. You need to make a video showing why. I think it would be very educational.
I'm playing off 19 and I use ShotScope v2 whenever I play so I have actual on course averages and my clubs are pretty well gapped. When I got fitted for the top end of my bag I bought a 4 hybrid and expected to get a 3 hybrid as well but it turned out that they went exactly the same distance so I only bought the 4.
21hcp... last gap test with my Wilson di7 irons, 5i 185 down to 125 with a PW. Recently acquired a custom fit set of taylormade M6 irons, so looking forward to getting used to them and seeing what the difference is.
Did a gapping session in August. Ended up replacing my 5 iron with the MP20 HMB and replace my 19° hybrid with a 5 wood to establish even gaps at the top of the bag. Currently 4 hdcp.
I love Mark's swing! He has such a good transition. I really struggle with that, staying on my back foot. I'm off 3 and my bad transition really is a card breaker. Get a full blown snap hook. I really think Mark's swing is way better than mine due to that fantastic transition.
23 Hcp, had a gapping session when I got my new clubs (March) but will need another at the start of next season as I'm hitting the ball better. If I can get to do it sooner on an indoor studio then I may do so. With the cold and wet conditions currently in the UK I'm quite happy using the distances I got back in March, out on the course.
I have had a gapping session in the past. I also use my clubs launch monitor to check it regularly. I change of ball has altered a few things. Irons and hybrid are 10 to 15yds gaps my issues are either end of the bag
Great vid. Loved you messing up marks bag. I'm a non handicapper. I tried doing a gapping session on my own at my local range (Cookridge Hall gc), without any launch monitors. It didn't work out too well. Couldn't really tell how far I was hitting it. I know there is 1 range in Leeds with that has all the bells and whistles and tells you how far etc so I need to get my sen down there and give it a go.
I have an 8 hcp. Today I did my second gapping test on a simulator. I had done one a week ago and noticed some irregularities and that promoted me to have my lofts checked.
I'm a 20hc and recently been going to a driving range with toptracer, and been getting averages. Has made a big difference with approach shots. I have the average carry distances Sellotaped to my clubs.
Nearly all am golfers will have issues top end of bag 4 5 6 irons may and can be around same distance due to swing speeds ... More 5 an 7 woods or more hybrids 👍.. swing looking good mark and a lovely lovely bloke
Excellent video. Keep it up. If you can do a Gap Session recommend it. I was lucky to do this recently with my i200 irons and a Swing Caddie on range using Taylor Made practice balls. Surprising what you will learn and find what adjustments you may need to individual club to bridge the gap or which clubs to take out. No club settings are perfect till you tweek them for you. Otherwise you are just carrying duplicate clubs and dead weight for nothing.
Good information, would also like to see gapping of different grip on same clubs, i.e. I have a 4 hybrid that I hit 155m but can grip down the shaft for 140 or back up to the butt for 165. Similar differences on 3 hybrid as well. As you can guess, I'm not overly confident in my longer irons. Love the in depth analysis on all your clips.
I’m off of 18 and I haven’t had a gapping session. With swing changes and soon club changes, my distances haven’t been the same. Plus some days I hit the fall longer then others either due to weather or my body.
This has been one of my favorite videos. Very informative and I use the arrcos to get my gapping. After 5 rounds, it gives pretty consistent readings. Now, let's talk about how I would have had to stomp James into the ground for messing with that bag. My eye was twitching every time a club went into the wrong spot. Mark, I use to do the same as you with the woods and wedges, but I found it easier when I put them near the putter well. I have a friend who actually puts his woods in the middle, wedges near the putter well, and the rest at the bottom of the bag.
Not that hard to figure out how long a 7 or 8 iron or the wedges go since I have a rangefinder and know the yardages on my home course, but can be a bit tricky to actually figure out how long woods, hybrid and driving irons go though. If they are actually overlapping or go the same distance.
Play off 9.2 and have done the gap test a couple of times. 4 to 5 is the shortest drop of 7 meters with the rest around 10 to 12, however, the 4 to 5 is also the smallest degree difference of 3 with the rest of the set being 4 to 5 degree, so I can live with that.
Hi...super..i.m senior handicap 17..average put 28 /30 putts.on other and.drive 180 m wood 5.160 m hybride 4 150 m iron 5 145m iron 7 130m 9 115m pw 95m 50 80 m56 65m 60 45m..sorry it.s to short..small player...🤣
The problem I have with an indoor gapping session is that I consistently hit the ball much farther off grass (c.10 yards). So if the indoor session says I fly an 8i 135 yards that actually means I fly it 145-147.
Out on the course, I log all my "full distance" shots - ie not just the best, but anything hit reasonably well. (duffs I ignore, because they could go anywhere, and I want a realistic "OK shot" distance. OTOH, this has become a lot harder recently, as my new course has few flat shots! My "OK distances" on the flat, average run GW 65-80, PW 95-100, 9i 105-115, 8i 125-135, 7i 135-150, 6i 150 - 165, 5i, hmm, 4h 170-180, 7w 180-195, 4w 190 - 220, D 195-250 About once a round, I hit a hot one which is about 1 - 1.5 club stronger. They tend to be the perfect transfers with great feeling swings. I'd love to be able to find those more often....
Low HCP. Not done a gapping session, but learnt from playing with my current clubs. Don't think it matters as much to lower HCP players because of the ability to hit different distances with each club when needed.
20ish handicap - have a range of around 3-5 yards of each club distance, not consistent enough so depends how I'm striking that day so left it as a range
I have a 14.2 handicap. And I need a tapping session bad. But I’m also really inconsistent with my clubs. Ex: 100yd to pin, I’ll hit my GW and will sometimes hit 120-130 yds.
Went on simulator outdoor grass range , not too disappointed with distances because range is uphill and muddy , in summer with a lot more run they will be farther .
MARK: WRITE IT DOWN ! I've found that if you do write it all down, over time, you'll actually learn most of those numbers just from looking at them over and over again! In short, you wont always need the chart if you use it religiously in the beginning! It has massively helped my game!
If you don't have acces to a $20,000 launch monitor, what do you suggest. Range balls that have been hit a thousand times and then just extrapolate to your regular ball?
Brian, you can use some apps on the phone like Grint...but you have to constantly use your phone on the course. I like arrcos and you can get a Gen 1 set for under $50. I also heard that Shot Scope is really good at $150.
I did it on course using a Garmin approach G7 and 1st gen Arccos over a year. Real data on course always trumps any launch monitor indoors with no weather elements that come into play. Rubbish.
@@briankinread2293 I heard game golf was difficult and very glitchy. Arrcos has its issues but once you learn it's ways...it is an extremely useful tool. And at the price, it is a great tool to have.
I'm a 13 Handicap golfer I haven't had a gap test but I did my own on flight scope at a local driving range so have a decent idea. Looking to have lessons in the new year before the start of the summer season try have a real push to break80 next year So I'll be having a proper gap test just before the start of the season 👊👍⛳ keep the content coming a break 80 series would be great for me lol my best round to date at my club 83 so not a million miles away
I know all my distances and gaps with each club, and they're not completely uniform. The driver is 33 yards > 3 wood, which is 16 yards > hybrid, 11 yard gaps between 4 to 8 irons, 16 yard gaps between 9 and SW, the 65 degree wedge being 22 yards < SW. Easy.
Just like Mark.....kind of. I always figure out what club I hit 150 yards then figure about 10 yard gap up and down the irons from there. My 150 yard club has changed from an 8 to a 7 as the years have piled on.😥
I need a session/s to get my gaping sorted similar results I suspect to what we have just seen, long irons all seem to go the same distance, 18 handicapper so the gaping might be down to my skill....
Always interesting! Mark seems to be short of distance at the top of the bag given his 7 iron goes 164 yards, he should be getting another 25 yards from his 3 wood & driver. What do you think?
I have no problem hitting Irons indoors, but 3 wood or Driver just doesn’t work for me ☹️ Outside I expect my 3 wood to travel around 220 and my Driver around 240!
The bunching together of the longer clubs is very common. Most handicap golfers could probably get by with 10 clubs in the bag and still score the same...
I'm playing off of a 15 handicap at the moment which Im happy with after getting back into golf after a few years not playing... I've given myself a gapping session on a trackman range but I done what you said not to and went lob wedge up to driver in order 🙈 just out of interest why shouldn't we do that? I'm playing with about a 10 yard gap in the irons however the 4 iron is only about 5 yards up on the 5 iron which is probably down to my strike and technique
When doing gapping sessions, should you hit the balls you play on course (ie ProV1) or does it matter? I’m a 9.2 and just got new Callaway Apex forged irons.
I reckon the dispersion needs looking at especially for clubs used in his approach shots. Those dispersion patterns would make it unlikely that he could ever go for a flag unless in the centre of a green. Taking his age and handicap I would reckon you could not only fix the gapping issues but lengthen his driver and 3 wood.
Hi James, good vid. What no one appears to be saying in these comments is clearly your man has swung it well today, so why the disparity in his iron distances. The answer will probably be loft so how is it acceptable for a new set of clubs to be so out? The other thing you didn’t test was swing weights which can also be wildly out upon delivery. I have recently had all my irons checked and found issues with the uniformity of lie, length, loft and swing weights so am having them rebuilt at my expense. The lower your handicap the bigger the impact but regardless of skill level, surely the main manufacturers have a duty to minimise this build tolerance when they’re all increasing the cost of their clubs? What do you think?
Idk. My. (15 hdcp) on course distances never match up with my simulator distances. My on course distances are always shorter by a few yards, on average. Since the roll after the carry distances can change from hole to hole, even from course to course, I care about is my "carry" yardages. Once on the course, I will factor in the "roll" conditions as needed, for club selection. .
HGC 125 head cover, is that Hinckley Golf Club which celebrated 125 years earlier this year? My club, gobsmacked if it is. He plays Pings and he's got that, 14 HCP, I don't believe it 👍 ☺ 👍 the man's a marvel
Play off 15, have measured distances with a GPS but also know carry distances from using a gc quod. I guess most over estimate how far they hit the ball. Played with a few people who especially with driver talk bs about how far they hit it😉

Currently 15 handicap,
I know my carry numbers for all clubs in the bag when hitting a solid strike.

Great video. Everyone needs to know the distance of each club. I run about a 13 yard gap between clubs

Low HCP. Not done a gapping session, but learnt from playing with my current clubs. Don't think it matters as much to lower HCP players because of the ability to hit different distances with each club when needed.
Not had access to a gapping session as my pro does not have the necessary measuring equipment. Did it roughly myself on toptracer at driving range !!!

I need a session/s to get my gaping sorted similar results I suspect to what we have just seen, long irons all seem to go the same distance, 18 handicapper so the gaping might be down to my skill....
I don't know how Mark can hit that good knowing what you are doing to his bag over there. That would drive me crazy!
I went to 3,4 and 5 hybrids as I had about "half a gap" between 6 and 5, and 5 and 4 , and 4 and 3 irons
Iv had a gapping session and my handicap is 11.9 (12)
Always interesting! Mark seems to be short of distance at the top of the bag given his 7 iron goes 164 yards, he should be getting another 25 yards from his 3 wood & driver. What do you think?
Isn’t his driver distance short in relation to the feast of his bag ? That’s where I would start !
Indeed, and someone who hits their 7 iron 164 yards should carry their 3 wood way past 199 yards...
Gapping session is crucial even for a 14 handicap
Hi James, great video. Where do you get your practice pro v1’s from?
Just got the new p790 taylormade irons and have no idea how far they go? I was fitted but after watching this vid I need gap testing 👍
Spoke to my pro about this today re the 5/6 and re said some manufacturers only have 2 degrees of loft difference but it isn’t well understood
Not sure about my 4 & 5 iron going the same distance but I know I can hit my 3 wood as far as my driver
Cracking video, more people need this. No one needs you mucking about with his irons in his bag #OCD
High handicapper not sure as still trying to get regular distances on my hits
I play of 22 and got a gapping when I got fitted for my clubs. They told me to go play with them for a month or so and then had me back to gap them
How about an Accos Cobra Connect review
I'm a 36hcp. I don't know the distances but it's not very far. I put effort in but get little out. Working on it ☺ 👍
Idk.
Mark's face was a picture when you were messing with his club placement in his bag, a bit when I go rummaging in the wife's knicker draw🤣🤣🤣🤣
Professionally done, not yet but I have done my own experiment if you will with a ES Launch Monitor
Ping i210 comes in three models/lofts, standard, power and retro. Which loft is Mark playing with?
Play off 15, have measured distances with a GPS but also know carry distances from using a gc quod. I guess most over estimate how far they hit the ball. Played with a few people who especially with driver talk bs about how far they hit it😉
Can you gap indoors off a matt. will it be different to grass.
Good question. Waiting for an answer.
I feel like Mark would be a good Sheriff of Nottingham
I do them all the time on a launch monitor but not sure how much that translates to the actual outdoor course.
Savage, messing with his bag setup.
