Half in the Bag: The Kyle Gallner Triple Feature Spectacular!

- Mike and Jay go down one of the most unexpected rabbit holes of all time! It’s the Kyle Gallner Triple Feature Spectacular! Brought to you by Vudu™ and Loot Crate™ and Quaker Oats™! Mike loves Vudu. It’s an interface his rotting, elderly, dementia-ridden brain can comprehend. It’s where he watches his movies and loves to click on the little pictures and see what other movies people have been in. This time, Mike saw that Jay’s old friend Kyle Gallner has been in 3 movies in the past 6 months or so. Mike watched the three most recent films and got a little something out of each one. He wanted to share them with Jay. And then with you, the internet audience. Are these movies destined to be classics decades from now? Probably not. They are lower budgeted quality independent films that make a heartful attempt at something new. Plus they do not have the words Clown, Shark, or Exorcist in the title. Did billions of people go to see them like the Barbie movie? Or Oppenhomie? Nope. But you can watch them on streaming for a low, low price and get a little bit of enjoyment in your sad lives for a tight 90! Or put them on a “to watch” movie list when the inevitable fallout drought of entertainment arrives as a result of the strike. Mike and Jay give these three films a fair shake, enjoying them all for the most part. Plus as an added bonus, both Mike and Jay tell stories from their brief but terrible experience on movie sets. Mike also pitches one of his worst movie ideas yet! Everyone can have a laugh at the expense of others! So open a cold frosty beverage of your choice. Sit back and relax. And prepare to watch two brain dead bumpkins from the mid-west struggle to form sentences out of their mouths filled with cheese curds, beer, and wallpaper paste. It’s the Kyle Gallner Triple Feature Spectacular!!!!!!!

What a strange thing for Kyle Gallner to wake up to.
"well if there's one thing I've learned from your story, it's that if Kyle Gallner is in any way upset about our video I know that I could kick his fucking ass"
Some people only dream about a one hour video giving positive vibes about their body of works, but others dare too… dream

I love that RLM is so comfortable with their steady audience that they can make videos like this with a title that will never show up in any search in a million years.
I know I missed it!
I'm personally only here for star trek trivia
When Kyle Gallner accepts his Oscar, he better thank RLM.
So how long do we think it'll be before Kyle Gallner is on an episode of Best of the Worst?
I mean, famous celebrity Rich Evans is on the show, i bett Kyle's dying to get to meet him.

This guy deserves a triple A role somewhere. His range, intensity and ability for comic timing remind me of Gyllenhaal, but he brings his own unique thing. Dinner In America is an absolute gem of a film too, everyone should see it
To me at least, finding that picture of Kyle Gallner standing next to Jay would be like finding the original recording of the Wilhelm Scream
Or possessing all of the Dick the Birthday boy photos!
A CalArts prof named Craig Smith actually found the original Wilhelm scream session earlier this year
Wouldn't it be more like finding Rich Evans childhood photos?
Also, surely the Wilhelm Scream tape is in archive somewhere... they wouldn't keep using a copy of a copy of a copy, the quality would be unacceptable by now

Agreed. I never know what these guys are gonna get up to, but you could have given literally a million guesses and I wouldn't have gotten it.
Just thinking about the Kyle Gallner character from Veronica Mars is repulsive, horrifying.
When watching RLM, the chances of a Kyle Gallner Triple Movie Spectacular are low, but never zero
Imagine being Kyle Gallner and pulling up TH-cam and seeing that your favorite internet review show uploaded a new video and...oh Jesus.
If you like Kyle Gallner, don't miss out on "Dinner In America." It's a slightly strange black comedy and Gallner is magnetic in it.
Came to say the same thing. It's genuinely one of my favorite movies of the past decade.
The just did a review for that movie.

Kyle Gallner totally deserves more work that’s recognized. I’ve seen him in several great films that received zero publicity and he was GREAT in them. Totally underrated actor. I’m glad you’re giving him platform.
E.g. Dinner In America
I really appreciate the statement Jay makes early on about the nature of the video. I was fully on board for a piss take but I'm even more on board for a genuine appreciation of a lesser known actor.
I was initially concerned about that too. While they’ll call out bad acting if they see it, they’re too considerate to ever just outright mock someone as an individual for an entire episode. So I suspected that if they were highlighting the same actor across three movies, they wouldn’t just be mocking that actor.
The Bruce Willis thing was an unusual circumstance, but even in that episode they didn’t really insult him or disparage him, they just didn’t understand why the movies were doing what they were doing.
I'm glad they did to especially cause this video helped me appreciate that ive seen this dude in multiple things before and hes been pretty damn good in all of them i just never placed a name to the face.

@@trainman222y78Well, I wouldn't say THAT...
Hilarious that the completely forgotten 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street was basically Jay's Joker origin story
I shot, edited and produced Mrs Claus the movie shown at the end. Man did the distributor make an awesome poster that had nothing to do with our film. They even changed the name to make it seem like a demonic Mrs Claus movie when it was always meant to be a who done is slasher.
Loved the experience I had working on that silly film. Thanks for the mention! Sadly the distro screwed us, and we haven’t made a penny off of it to do a sequel.
With that said we were mostly all horror fans and tried our best with what we had. Made it with ten thousand dollars, and somehow finished it. I’m proud of it, but I can see how it’s considered a bad movie.
I like how it’s apparently a recurring theme in RLM that they just walked off sets where they were extras or other small roles
Their utter disdain and disinterest is the perfect antidote to our increasingly grossly parasocial world.
Yeah I just noticed that as well, I remembered when Mike and Rich Evans were at that fun fair for a Drew Barrymore movie and also left. To be honest if what they say is true and I have no reason not to, it sounds like extra work is fucking slavery... no idea what the hourly rate is on those gigs but pretty sure most extras work for next to nothing some of them even volunteer and they are working for around 12-14 hours a day it sounds pretty horrendous.
You can definitely see why they started their own business.
@@artofsamit’s not that bad unless you’re trying to make real money doing it. Then it’s very difficult because there are a zillion good actors.
Shows you how badly extras are treated tbh. Mike, Jay and Rich can leave because they were doing it out if curiosity. If you're an actor trying to work your way up then they get away with some awful treatment
Watching Mike hint at some past event is like trying to get your teacher to talk about their life so that they’ll forget about the homework, except I actually wanna know
Sometimes teachers have genuinely interesting stories. My teacher got a tattoo from Whang-od, a legendary Kalinga tattoo artist here in the Philippines.
Kyle Gallner better be careful that he isn't mistaken for a tiny toy skeleton.
coming back to this after their dinner in america episode
one thing I appreciate about RLM is that they can make positive reviews just as entertaining as their negative ones, I feel like a lot of creators rely a lot on the catharsis of hating a piece of media to get anything going
It's things like this that really show how nice their dynamic and editing is
With all the catty, middle aged woman style of passive aggressiveness on Wisconsin men have - idk if you can call this a positive review. It’s a nice review, but these guys certainly are not positive
@@ChrisLentikEh? Jay ends by saying he thought all three were good. They talk about all the little things they liked in each one. They were absolutely positive. Don't confuse positive with effusive.
A lot of media review channels aren't actually media channels, they're reactionary political channels with about 5% of the film knowledge of a single member of RLM
I'd never thought about Kyle Gallner a single time till now, but I immediately recognized his face. That's a classic character actor for you!

Speaking of "Legacy Artists", I have to say I admire Nic Cage for using a stage name so he could make it on his own as an actor instead of plunging headfirst into nepo baby territory. A lot of people wouldnt refuse to ride along on that family clout train.
Not acting related, but I respect that Joe Hill (Stephen King's son) decided to use Joe Hill as his pen name instead of Joe King. Joe Hill is actually a very good author in his own right, and has his own distinct style.

Mike looks like he just took his yearly shower.
Yeah, he looks more pink-ish than his usual canteen red skin tone...
He's too lazy for a yearly shower; He just makes sure to get arrested once a year for public inebriation, gets held over for unpaid parking tickets, and sent to county jail, where he gets hosed down. It saves him the effort of actively showering.

It took me half the video to remember where I know Kyle Gallner from: like twenty years ago, he was the mass shooter from an episode of Cold Case! A super memorable role (and episode).

Definitely one of Cold Case's best episodes. Man, it's nice when other people remember that show.

Loved how wholesome this was. Never heard of Kyle Gallner, so I assumed he committed some horrible assault or scam. Pleasantly surprised it was genuine appreciation for talent.
I think you need to revisit your idea of what 'wholesome' means, if you're applying that word to RLM
A few weeks ago, I saw the Flash. And I decided to look up who played him on Smallville. It was this guy, and I recognized him as the boyfriend from Smile. I then went on a deep dive on his filmography for some reason, thinking I’d be the only person to ever do so.
…or so I thought. 🙃
I was living in LA in 2012 and one of my friend's boyfriends was directing a movie and she got all the aspiring actors we knew to go in for auditions for the lead role. They wound up casting Kyle Gallner. It was called ZenDog. Weird movie.

Jay's hairstyles deserve their own spotlight episode at this point.
You just know "legacy artist" is gonna start showing up in very defensive interviews.
I love how Mike always prints off his notes like a true old.
I think this love stems from the fact that Kyle Gallner looks like the handsome version of Shrek from The Last Vampire On Earth, one of the greatest films of all time.
Taking a break real quick to say I’ve always loved this dude his face has always stuck out in my mind ever since I saw haunting in Connecticut when I was in maybe 7th grade right when it came out and I’ve followed his career pretty closely he’s been in some crap for sure but he himself is never the issue. One of the best working today!
He's got a good face for acting. He can be handsome or ugly, likeable or creepy. He has a look that complements a broad acting range. Let's hope he stays focused on the acting and doesn't just become buff sex symbol movie star guy.
It's funny, he is such a random actor, but he is very recognizable to me as well. I somehow knew exactly who this video was about upon seeing the title and knew he was in Jennifer's body and Veronica Mars.
Its crazy how you definitely know this guy from at least one thing. I'm not a horror guy so I didn't really recognize this dude from anywhere but there was something familiar, and it all made sense when Mike mentioned his role in Smallville, of course he was the little Impulse!
We really need a Milwaukee ghost investigator series starring mike
I love that they have basically abandoned the idea of _Half in the Bag_ being about reviewing mainstream new releases and have turned it into "Mike and Jay talk abut whatever (which occasionally includes major new releases)".

I used to see Kyle Gallner at the VON's in Burbank about 3 times a year when I lived in the Valley.
Nicholas D'Agosto showed some serious comedy chops in "Trial and Error" opposite Lithgow. Solid spoof of "The Staircase" and "The Jinx". 7.8 on IMDB, not sure why this series didn't get more attention! I'd put it right up there with Parks and Rec.
I enjoyed the films. Especially The Passenger. He reminds me a lot of Jeremy Renner, specifically his mannerisms.

These reviews also give a new light with modern American indie films. A24 to me is juuust there but smelling their own farts while most great "indie" films in other countries are distributed by big companies in their respective countries. So a genuine modest budget film wave distributed by Freevie type streaming services is welcoming and hopeful to tear away from the overly budgeted indie feel films that Hollywood exploited
Love Kyle Gallner! Can’t wait to watch these 3 movies. If you haven’t already, please check out another one of his indie films called “Little Birds” with Juno Temple, it’s so good!
Kyle Gallner was actually one of the best things about Smile, and I liked Smile overall. I recognized his face in a "where do I know him from" way, and now I know why. Dude is a hardworking actor and has been around in a lot of stuff I watched in the past, where he was just a side character. This is a pretty awesome thing you guys did here. There are quite a few unsung low key indie actors who deserve to be spotlighted. This is a great start. Should consider a separate "Half in the Bag Spotlight" for this kind of approach (outside of black void eps, and Mike and Jay Talk). Similar to BotW Spotlight episodes, but for legit good actors and filmmakers who deserve more recognition. I'm actually fully interested in watching all of the movies he's played significant roles in now.
On a side note, I'm happy to know that Johnny Berchtold was in a decent film (instead of just mediocre crap like Snow Falls), alongside Kyle Gallner. I saw him on a Dead Meat Podcast episode, over a year ago, and he seems like a good dude.
