I wanted to buy an ipad off carousell recently, then my colleague and i discussed the reasons why i really need an ipad. We came to the conclusion that it will probably become a ‘white elephant’ after that euphoria of using it for awhile. I don’t use it for work and i most certainly will use my phone instead of an ipad to take photos/selfies/wefies. So i decided to use that money i was going to use on the ipad for drinks and building my friendship with my colleague. So grateful we had that conversation.
Bought a pair of shoes in March this year 1 week before the lockdown here. I ended up not wearing it until now. Only if I “quarantined” my desire to buy for at least 2 weeks and foresee the lockdown, I would not feel this buyer’s remorse. 😅

I think it would be a good idea to learn how to properly use the camera you got first. You will be surprised at the quality of photos you can get when you learn how to use it properly. I've had my camera for over 6 years now. And I recently took a photography class that taught me how to properly use it, and holy crap I didn't realize this camera was capable of those kinds of photos. Also after taking the class, I learned how to take more professional photos on my phone as well. Did you know you can shot in RAW on most smartphones? I didn't and it makes a world of a difference.

I've been feeling the FOMO when I've seen my coworkers all upgrade to the new iPhone 12 Pro or Pro Max from their previous models. Although it initially made me feel like I needed to upgrade, I realized that my X is fine despite it mysteriously restarting here and there (which can get really annoying if I happen to need it in a pinch) but all-in-all it's not horrible and is still very much usable. I always consider the "commitment cost" of an item: How and where I will store it, how much maintenance ir cleaning it will require, how upset I would be if the item broke or otherwise became unusable shortly after purchase (accidents happen). Usually, I get exhausted at the thought of these and don't buy it.
I always try to look deeply at why I'm actually going to buy a certain item, and that makes me rethink if I actually need it. Saved me a lot of buys ;)

If the answer is "yes" then I buy as many shares of stock in the company for the same price of the product. The week after, I buy the product itself. Example: two weeks ago I purchase 10 shares of stock in Sony. Last week, I bought a Sony a6400 camera.

Anyone who buys anything during Black Friday or Cyber Monday is a sucker. There are hundreds of memes about the fake deals, markups, etc. Like you said, and like I've been saying for 40+ years, you aren't saving money on a "sale" if you're buying something you didn't need in the first place. Upgrade the things you need, the things you use often, and the things that will improve your quality of life. If you walk everyday, buy the best pair of running shoes you can afford that work for you. Buy good pillows and a mattress. If you waste a ton of toilet paper, buy a bidet attachment. If sitting and working is hurting your back, knees, etc. get more exercise in and buy the best office chair you can afford. And so on and so forth. What you end up regretting the most are the purchases that have no impactful, long-term value to your existence--like that leather jacket you mentioned. (I also thought leather jackets would last forever, so I bought one when I was a 23-year-old, 190lb runner. Now I'm a 245lb powerlifter. Guess what happened to that "forever" jacket?) Same goes with mostly disposable items like wristwatches, accessories, electronics--which are designed with 'planned obsolescence', and so forth. Even "investing in yourself" is a waste of money for a lot of people. People in my friend circle have subscribed to Skillshare, purchased Audible books, etc. only to stop using them after a few weeks or months. They're fleeting hopes of self improvement. Focus on what matters. Don't buy dumb shit.

Only invest in things that will improve your assets or meet your physiological needs. meaning if you believe this expense will give you edge and improve your assets sure go ahead. if you are thrifty and never relent in spending a dime improving the tech of your business then you're pretty much going to be out of business in a few years to come.

I think there needs to be a balance between 'impulse buying' and 'good enough'. The balance is probably 'letting it brew' so good insights Daniel but I think you can expand on these concepts as a process. Step one: do your research and decide on the item you want/need. Step two: decide where to purchase from (I would say don't over think and stress over getting a deal but maybe consider other factors. I for example try to buy local and sustainably sourced.) Step three: If you can, LET IT BREW (this should be on a tshirt btw). I've started doing this without even realising it and I think it's a great suggestion. I think it would help people to pull away from purchasing for the sake of getting that dopamine hit.

A list of regretful purchases: Microsoft surface rt; the keyboard for it that stopped working within a week, but never returned because I was being dumb, taking on more uni courses than I can handle and dropping them too late, uni insurance and not realizing I can opt out, mystery bags from ardene, random nick nacks from the dollar store, clay supplies... we all make mistakes, but at least there's a lesson to learn from for doing so. :'D

Truly, there are exceptional products that if you have to buy one in your life, you should get, but not at the expense of having a perfectly good one that you're still using (especially when you don't have the money to spring up for it). I am often trapped in the quandary of saving up for a really good piece of tech or *anything* really, and also considering that "eh, I just need one I can use *right now*" I find though that I often end up having buyer's remorse when I'm choosing to do the latter (especially if I don't know if I can responsibly dispose of it once I do get the product I was saving for) BUT often the most sensible thing to do is to just go for what you need *now* and then reevaluate down the line. As you've said, it's about fulfillment, it's about getting to do more with what you have, and it's about cultivating what fills you with happiness and keeps you fulfilled. 🙌
I’ve done it both ways. I bought a Fuji camera I spent ages researching about, thinking I would get into photography and never did. That was a waste of over £200. On the other hand I walked into a shop to buy a Bluetooth speaker, had 10 minutes before the shop shut. Listened to each one for like 20 seconds and just bought the one that was loud and clear. It was £150 and is one of my favourite possessions, I use it almost every day and take it camping and to festivals.
I made some pretty horrendous purchases in my youth. Clothing and cars being the things I regret the most. What about you guys?

I had buyers remorse buying a used like new Sony FX30 camera. The emotion was so intense that I called the vendor and cancelled it.
I realized that although my Fujifilm xt3 doesn’t output 12-bit Raw video or have the latest and greatest features that it’s a good enough camera and that I should put my efforts into the art of filmmaking as opposed to the tech behind it.

The most wasteful thing I ever spent money on was a brand new car, 9 years ago. I didn't use it much and sold it after less than three years, losing nearly £4000 on it. Never again!

I find my problem is a little different 😅 I have buyer’s anxiety even if I know the purchase will add more meaning in my life and I’m not buying the latest and greatest (e.g. cheap Intel Celeron laptop for med school -> iPad 7th gen). Growing up financially insecure does crazy things to the brain hahahaha

I think there needs to be a balance between 'impulse buying' and 'good enough'. The balance is probably 'letting it brew' so good insights Daniel but I think you can expand on these concepts as a process. Step one: do your research and decide on the item you want/need. Step two: decide where to purchase from (I would say don't over think and stress over getting a deal but maybe consider other factors. I for example try to buy local and sustainably sourced.) Step three: If you can, LET IT BREW (this should be on a tshirt btw). I've started doing this without even realising it and I think it's a great suggestion. I think it would help people to pull away from purchasing for the sake of getting that dopamine hit.

I bought the Tefal pans 5 years ago. I’m now looking to replace them as the non stick coating scraped off. Hoping caring for and buying cast iron will last a lifetime instead.

A list of regretful purchases: Microsoft surface rt; the keyboard for it that stopped working within a week, but never returned because I was being dumb, taking on more uni courses than I can handle and dropping them too late, uni insurance and not realizing I can opt out, mystery bags from ardene, random nick nacks from the dollar store, clay supplies... we all make mistakes, but at least there's a lesson to learn from for doing so. :'D

Love the candor on this one. Truly, there are exceptional products that if you have to buy one in your life, you should get, but not at the expense of having a perfectly good one that you're still using (especially when you don't have the money to spring up for it).
I am often trapped in the quandary of saving up for a really good piece of tech or *anything* really, and also considering that "eh, I just need one I can use *right now*" I find though that I often end up having buyer's remorse when I'm choosing to do the latter (especially if I don't know if I can responsibly dispose of it once I do get the product I was saving for) BUT often the most sensible thing to do is to just go for what you need *now* and then reevaluate down the line. As you've said, it's about fulfillment, it's about getting to do more with what you have, and it's about cultivating what fills you with happiness and keeps you fulfilled. 🙌
I’ve done it both ways. I bought a Fuji camera I spent ages researching about, thinking I would get into photography and never did. That was a waste of over £200.
On the other hand I walked into a shop to buy a Bluetooth speaker, had 10 minutes before the shop shut. Listened to each one for like 20 seconds and just bought the one that was loud and clear. It was £150 and is one of my favourite possessions, I use it almost every day and take it camping and to festivals.
