The creators confirmed that he would never have actually been able to bring himself to kill Rayla. He would have incapacitated her and brought her back for punishment.
The first time I felt bad for him was that time he got trapped in that coin. He was being treated unfairly and he didn't deserve what Viren was doing to him. And when I found out that Runaan had a husband and that they cared for each other, I decided that I would forgive for everything he's done when he gets freed from that coin.
