Im traveling to Tokyo in a little less than a week and I honestly thought that i would have to just eat rice and miso broth the entire trip. The fact that there is a place that has vegan omurice makes me so happy! Thank you for your recommendations, I will be going to all of them.

    • @ChefinJapan

Welcome!! And thanks for watching~ It really isn’t hard for vegans in Japan anymore! It was like 5/10 years ago but there are so many options now. I think it’s just hard if you go into a non-vegan place since a lot of restaurants won’t alter their dishes to accommodate. Also the countryside can have limited options (but honestly even in the countryside I find vegan gems sometimes). Anyway, hope you and your friend can enjoy some good food !~ ^^

@@ChefinJapan Right now I'm planning for a 4 week trip across Japan, desperately searching for vegan advice online so this was really helpful. I'm wondering what the situation is like if you don't really have a place to cook but also can't afford to eat at restaurants three times a day though 😅

@@jg6125 I’m glad to hear this was helpful! Ikea in Shibuya has a restaurant on the top floor which has vegan options. Make sure to order the "plant based meat balls." They also have a ridiculously low-priced vegan ice cream cone at the front of the store. It's something like thirty yen, which is insane.

I'm also a vegan and I have visited Tokyo 10 times..I have never been in a restaurant in Tokyo on any of my trips because the language barrier is too intimidating. Especially the crowded izakayas in Shinjuku. I end up eating food in my hotel that I brought from home. On my last trip, this food caused a problem going through Japanese customs. They x-rayed all my protein bars and asked a lot of questions. Added the extra problem of being a vegan and that I travel alone and don't know any locals, I just gave up on eating in restaurants or cafes.
