We as a nation need to abolish tipping culture and hold employers accountable for providing livable wages
In other countries tipping is seen as insulting because it is EXPECTED that their employer should be paying them a respectable amount, therefore they do not need charity.

Only the Japanese find it “insulting”, the rest that don’t tip simply don’t because they get paid a fair wage. Every single country in South America tips. Canadians work for tips. My dad drove a taxi cab as an independent contractor. He taught me never to let you gas tank below 1/2 tank (I still live by that). Sometimes he was at the gas station two or more times in one day, because he worked the airport that day. Same if you drive a limousine. You can’t ask your customers for gas money before you give the service. Also in the end the food got delivered without the extra money. What does that tell you.

I live in Dc and most of the well-off people I have picked up in Uber never tipped. I have picked up Bank CEOs, politicians, big time radio executives, lawyers…and not one of them ever tipped. They complimented my car, enjoyed the ride, and left great reviews, but never tipped. Out of the 5000 rides I gave when I worked with Uber I only got tipped like 10 times 😐. And my husband did over 10k rides he got tipped about 200 times. He said that none of the wealthy people ever tipped him, and most of his tips were under $3. He even picked up Jake Paul and he didn’t tip 😂. So Yeah. It could be that they get Ubers so much that it would be even more expensive to have to tip so many drivers every time you get a ride. Us here in the US are so caught up on this tip culture that it’s causing people to do crazy sh*t. I still can’t understand how someone will pay $300 to get their hair done and the stylist still wants a tip 🥴. I will never understand that.

There are 2 sides to this tipping situation. On one hand, if you don’t tip prior, how do you expect good service from the delivery driver? At the same time, the delivery driver has to earn that tip as well. Personally, when it comes to ordering off the apps, I always tip because I usually leave instructions for the delivery and I would like the driver to follow them. As far as DOTD, I would give it to the driver only because of what the first lady said. I’ve driven for Lyft and after so many rides, you can cash out or even they got all these cash loan apps these days for independent contractors that the driver could’ve gotten ahold of before asking the customer. Personally, I would’ve called a friend or family member before asking the customer for the tip beforehand. Another reason I would give DOTD only to the driver is because if you know you’re gonna be delivering to make money, how on earth are you out of gas already? Unless you been driving all day and absolutely no one tipped you. But even then, to bring up what the first lady said, you can cash out. If I was the customer, I wouldn’t have gave him the money either and calling the customer 5 times is way outta line. I would’ve cancelled the order and had Uber Eats credit me so that I can reorder. And here’s the thing that no one is asking, how was the driver able to drop it off to him anyway?

Miss this one. As a Uber Driver and Uber Eats Driver in Bergen County the tipping is low. (Yes DJ Envy parts). First the Uber Eats Driver should not have excepted the request. Second anything with in 5miles or 12mins, the pay is only $2. sometimes $1.50. At first I was taken all request showing $2 for a 10min ride thinking they were going to tip at the door. Wrong. I learned real quick even if I get their order there fast and still hot. I only get a Thank You or Leave it at the door. Wake up call when I deliver the Upper part of Bergen County (hint: EC/AP area). $60/$70 order for $2/$4 SMH. If the tip is not in the app, I kindly let another driver take it.

I used to be a server. People assume rich people like Envy tend to tip good but they don’t! They tend to tip the lowest! If you receive a large tip, it’s usually someone who works/worked in the industry and they show compassion! I live in an apt on the 3rd floor so I tip $5 for fast food orders plus an additional dollar for each floor and if it’s raining I’ll give two more dollars! If it’s groceries, I’m tipping $15-20 depending on the weather.

If that driver would have asked me for gas money I would have simply contacted the service support and cancelled the order. Got my money back then ordered again. Because I have had people who were further out and they will suddenly make an excuse like my car just broke down. They do that and they can keep the food and some of the money. And if you cancel before they cancel the order DoorDash will only give you some of your money back cause you cancelled. It looks like you changed your mind rather than the driver not delivering.

Chicago Uber driver here, who was a dispatcher for 13 years for various trucking companies. I just gotta say, the callers who called you are not very bright with their points. I'm not a fan of asking for tips, I would never do such a thing, i'd just not take the order.
The reason why you tip up front, for things like Uber or DoorDash, and not a waiter necessarily, is because there is gas money involved, and time (time meaning, if I take your shitty ass order, then i'm losing out on a potential good one). You cannot compare the two like that, because it's apples and oranges. Waiters/servers don't spend money by walking to the kitchen, but drivers do by driving to the restaurant, and then driving to the customer's home. So a tip up front IS needed, unfortunately. Do I agree with this approach? NO. But it is what it is for now, and the customers gotta deal with that fact. Also, waiters commonly receive an hourly rate+tips, not min wage ofc, but the drivers get nothing like that.
If you cannot afford to tip, you should not be using a luxury service where you are paying someone to get your food while you do whatever you want. Not to mention the food costs are higher too on the app lol like it just makes no sense. This service is best suited for those who do not have the time to be picking up their food. Or for those who make a lot per hour, to where it is more cost effective for them to order food, rather than stopping what they are doing to go pick it up themselves. ie. If you make $1000 an hour, it doesn't make sense to stop what you're doing for 1 hour for a mcdonalds cheeseburger. If that person did that, that cheeseburger actually costed that person $990+ dollars.
People want this service to be like amazon, where they just get a mountain of packages with no expectation to tip. Not how this shit works, that's a different pay model. As a driver myself, I too have a problem with the way Uber and DoorDash does business, but again, it is what it is, and if you decide to not cooperate with how it works you are screwing over the driver and since a lot of people have no self control, problems can come with that. Me personally, I believe the drivers should have an increased base pay based on mileage (and it needs to be fair) to where tips aren't needed. And then, the customer can add tip.

Ok first of all the driver should have gotten DOTD because when a order comes in on UberEats it tells u the distance and payout before you accept the trip…..it also gives you the option to decline. If he didn’t have the gas money then he shouldn’t have accepted the trip. He shouldn’t have asked for gas money up front he could have just cancelled the trip.. ALSO depending on the amount of trips he made that day he could have cashed out and got his gas that way. If it was his last trip that’s even better because he had money to cash out to buy his own gas… if it was his first trip then why are u delivering with a empty tanks.

I'm no expert, but I use both Doordash and Uber Eats at the same time. Before I accept the order, I carefully compare my car mileage to the distance of the order. With gas nearing $5 (in Arizona), I tread carefully. To make it worthwhile, the order must be at least 7-8 dollars within a 5-mile radius. Why should I accept a $20 order that is 12 miles away if I drive a Toyota Tacoma that has 10 miles left? It stinks, but you have to decline the order, or I will accept the order, fast pay myself (the cash will be received within 2-3 minutes), then head to the next gas station, and then proceed.
You are an independent contract which means you are your own business. To stay ahead of the competition, everything you do must be reduced to a scientific level.

As an Uber eats driver I only pick up orders that have the tip incorporated with the base that Uber gives us . People who don’t tip will more than likely receive cold food and will have to wait a long time for their food . If you like cold food and want to wait hours for your food than that’s what you’ll get . 🤷🏾‍♀️ I had a angry customer who asked why she had to wait for 3 hours for her food and found out it was because an initial tip wasn’t included and no one would pick up the order . Uber had to up the base pay to 17 dollars and that’s the only way she received her food .
Food delivery is a luxury service!! If you can’t afford to tip go to the market or get your food yourself !!

I understand Envy, I only use UberEats vs other platforms because they constantly offer 40% off my meals. With my busy lifestyle & the high cost of groceries it’s easier and cheaper (I feel) to order UberEats from a good quality restaurant (not fast food) spend the $40 (saving 40%) and have leftovers for lunch tomorrow and dinner than to go to the grocery store spend $40 on your ingredients then come home and cook, eat then clean the mess.
Now just because I’m using the service doesn’t mean that I am rich. I tip the 18% and it pains me because I contemplate if I should save by picking it up myself, but I may loose my parking spot (NYC) and leaving my home around a certain time is not worth it. If an Uber driver was to request more money I would have to decline because we both two different types of broke and I don’t have more to give, sorry. It’s should be their employers responsibility, not mine.
