Imagine being a wanted criminal and thinking you got away hidden on a MARTA train only for it to pull alongside the train at speed with their guns drawn
Impractical. You’d need to keep up with the train and even if you could, you’d need to work between rail traffic. Plus the containers and trailers are not always going to be at the end of the train especially if they are being broken into. If it’s happening in a rail yard and or while the train is static, a regular police car will respond faster. Remember: you have to be at a crossing or on another surface in order to deploy the hi-rail wheels, these vehicles (unlike rail car movers which are smaller) have to be somewhere where the rails sit flush with the surface.
The idea of an armored vehicle with hi-rail equipment is imo quite strange. I mean theres obviously the very small chance of perhaps a terror attack or something on a rail line but Id suspect the money wouldve been better spent on something more akin to a vehicle with firefighting apparatus or evacuation space. But Im no expert on the topic, and if theyre already getting trucks like those theres no harm in making them hi-rail equipped I suppose
There's actually been quite a few terror attacks in metro stations around the world. I don't know of any in the US but 2 that stand out to me happened in Tokyo and London. I suppose it's only a matter of time before such an attack strikes a system in the US. I could see it being useful in a hostage situation where the assailants have blocked off the surface entrances to an underground station and trapped passengers inside. Thant said, I'm really not sure why they went with a full SWAT truck instead of a van or pickup. I guess they really do plan for the nightmare scenario.
@@trainzguy2472 Right, but the actual attacks you're describing were a poison gas attack and a series of suicide bombings. An armoured personnel carrier is completely useless in both of those situations.
I'd have to think that other major cities that have light rail have similar vehicles. You never need this vehicle on rails until you really need it. Better to be prepared. Plus it was mentioned that the vehicle gets used in other dangerous criminal situations.
@@Sevenfeet0 that's all it gets used is "other dangerous situations." My city (Milwaukee) has a few of these..... not one has high-rail abilities. I'm surprised that they also didn't opt for pontoons as well.... you know, just incase the tracks are flooded when it's needed
Train tracks are an excellent way for short cuts. So, it's possible that if you needed to get somewhere faster then just hop on the rails. Provided there are railroads in the direction you need to be.
He mentioned “if a train stuck right there” but I still don’t understand how effective this is. Is this for when a train is blocking the crossing? Or using unoccupied lines to reach a destination ? Or are they use this to pursue a train?
Guess I’ve seen it all now, I’m wondering to what purpose having a turret on a police bearcat would be used for, I guess for access to equipment on top? I also wonder if it’s NCB (nuclear, chemical, biological) rated? For response to any terror threats
This is a prime of example of have and not need over need and not have i was kinda surprised by the rotating turret as there probably not gonna mount a M60 on it so what is it used for
I’m curious on what kind of rail permit is required for emergency situations. Most railroad track cars travel under special permits thru dispatchers. Curious if a rail Forman qualified on that territory reports with that SORT team or if they are allowed to just put on the tracks and roll with just a “police hold” per the dispatcher. Great video.
Wouldn’t they be better off having an all round hi-rail rescue/utility vehicle and just commandeer it for the one off situation it would ever be useful. You could even run such a truck in reverse so the windscreen isn’t exposing the driver if approaching a dangerous situation
This is a very impressive piece of equipment and will be most useful for a variety of purposes. A very good investment which could save lives through being able to access areas that other vehicles could not. Thank you very much for this very interesting and informative video presentation.

You can cross that bridge on the track. When and if, the railroad gives you permission after it goes through the railroad owners and insurance, and if you can get the track and time. Faster???? Obviously these boys don’t work for the railroad.
