Sharing this kind of know-how with the public shows not only how skilled you are as a player but also what a great person you are. The break shots you demonstrated have helped me so much in my game. Thank you for taking the time to share your expertise! 🙏
I think it is amazing you have taken the time give back to the billiards community. You have been one of my favorites for a long time. Such a tiger at the table. Good stuff neils. Great content
Terminator....>>Your instruction is TOP NOTCH....I have never seen a pro give the secrets up to the game so selflessly as you do....these shots have stopped me from playing good pool and now I have the tools to break racks from any ball with the correct angle and knowledge! Thank you for giving this knowledge....You are the most exciting player to watch on TH-cam,,,,I wish you further success!
This is so timely! I've been working on my breakshots a lot recently. The good news is that I think I've now discovered every possible scratch on every break shot. That's progress, right?
I am new to straight pool and I feel that the breakshot is my biggest weakness. Thank you so much for this video, it has helped me a great deal!! Great explanations, great variety. Would not have dreamed to find such a good video on youtube! Wish you all the best for your career!
Why is it that I often set up a great break ball, make it, and then have a great spread with an easy shot in the next rack - but that's the one I miss?..... It's so hard for me to get passed one rack because of this.
Sounds like it's a focus thing? Check out this video and also try not to rush things: th-cam.com/video/ln1lsbWEQSs/w-d-xo.html Let me know if it was helpful 👊😎
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen Hi Niels - Thanks for the reply. You are right - it is a focus thing but it is not because of distractions. I feel like when there is a problem on the table, challenging shot, or even playing a great safe, I rarely mess those up.... but as soon as I make that tough shot is done, the next one (and the easier the more of a problem it is for me), I screw up. I almost feel like my eyes go cross eyed and my stroke goes all twitchy. Any advice on how to be disciplined enough to "eject and reset" in those situations?
When you're getting down on an "easy" shot, recognize that. Then get back up, think about respecting the shot as still missable, then get back down with any ego aside and play it with focus
As usual Niels, great content. Your point about breaking the balls up quickly so you can continue to let your stroke out is really key in my opinion. When I started pool again after a long lay off I was playing with someone pretty decent and he liked to pick through the racks. I tried this using the tips in Capelle's book but it made me overthink and killed my natural rhythm and shotmaking. Instead, I have fixed my game plan on a simple 3-stage process recently and I am very close to breaking my high score. 1. Choose break ball, key ball 1 and 2 etc. If not available, just go to next stage. 2. Clear problem areas like the pack, clusters, balls blocking pockets etc. 3. Final break ball run in. I really focus on speeding up where possible so my shot making does not go awry. And to be honest, if I cannot see the patterns or the shots, I just pot some balls and skip to stage 3 because like you say, any break ball that has an angle can and does work! I also see this as a chance to get back in the flow. Some of the advice like leaving triangles, working outside in, going in a circle does not work for me as it seems to inhibit any creativity I might have.
I appreciate the video. Always looking to learn more about Straight Pool. My favorite game, but also most frustrating. I am committing this year to getting better at straight pool. I want to run 50s or more again. I ran 83 when I was like 22, but at 50, 48 is the most I have done now. Sent a pay pal. My request is more straight pool videos. Keep up the good work.
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen , great to hear and see more. Maybe something about how higher on the rack, with force follow, the hesitation just goes around the rack. I am not sure if I am describing well, but I have learned that you can't just hit high and hit hard if the break ball is above the rack, the cueball will just go around the rack. I have to hit it easier and graze the rack. Tips on that?
@@batmmann Yes that's totally correct! If you hit force follow then the will kick back first a bit before going forward, which means it bends around the rack. Softer keeps it on tracks. I might do a video about that. Tnx!!
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen , thanks for the response and confirmation. Yeah, you could do a lot of videos on straight pool. So much to learn. A couple ideas. We don't shoot as straight as you, but I noticed some shots, you hit it very hard and others, you just hit it solid. Maybe talk on that? Also, those think cuts where the cue balls go into the side of the rack work great. I mean, I shatter the rack with that one. Not one I typically choose, but amazed how well the balls open up from that angle. Throw shots and carom shots. Oh, and those of us on desperation runs, what balls go when you miss the rack and have 14 balls racked? Hard to even count that, since you would play safe.
I’ve recently made it a point to run 100 (not in a row. Not that good yet lol) balls in straight pool before my practice sessions. Just trying to get better at it because I love the game. So this is just what I need. Thank you for sharing. Ever heard of the triangle pattern in straight pool. I guess Nick Varner used to use that. If so, a video on that would be great. I asked the old timers around here and they never heard of it.
I had a 27 ball run last night. Newer to the game, but a surprisingly high run for me and PB. What I thought was a perfect/ textbook break ball turned into a scratch. I made the ball just how I wanted, and with draw, and directly scratched in the same corner to end my run
The breaking shot is astonishing for rookies! Very useful drills! Here's my little question, when you play top spin and draw shot, which spot do you aim at? 1.5 tips among the center or just aiming the Highest and the Lowest point? Sometimes I feel confused by the cue ball angle when my routine isn't straight or 90 degrees. Thanks for answering me Neils.

In my opinion very informative video. The break shot I would of liked to see is when the last object ball is in the rack and gets spotted. Also what happens when the cue ball is in the rack on the last object ball.
My biggest problem with this game is leaving a break ball at all. Finding the end pattern for it. I been playing allot and it is tough. When I first started I shot all my break balls in. lol Now I find them but still hard to leave key balls to get a good break ball .
Thanks for posting this....break shots can be very humbling....
