  • Ask This Old House General Contractor Tom Silva teaches a homeowner a simple technique for tiling backsplash.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse
    Time: 2-3 hours
    Cost: $100
    Skill Level:
    Beginner
Tools List for Installing a Simple Tile Backspash:
    - Measuring tape [amzn.to/2IVW694]
    - Scissors [amzn.to/2XC77EI]
    - Rubber float [amzn.to/2XCIpUL]
    - Utility knife [amzn.to/2X4RMbw]
    - Bucket [amzn.to/2Lpxs2o]
    Shopping List:
    - Square tile [amzn.to/2ZVR3eE]
    - Tile adhesive mat [amzn.to/2XeTz2z]
    - Pre-mixed grout [amzn.to/2REK0Ea]
    - Degreasing cleaner [amzn.to/2XdmhRB]
    - Drop cloth [amzn.to/2XhGfur]
    - Painters tape [amzn.to/2JikkcO]
    - Sponge [amzn.to/2IUPWWP]
    Steps:
    1. Clean the wall thoroughly with the cleaner to remove any grease or other debris.
    2. Secure the drop cloth on the counter using the painters tape, covering the entire work area.
    3. Mark the two sides of the wall using the painters tape where the backsplash should start and stop.
    4. Measure the space you plan on tiling. Transfer the measurements to the tile adhesive mat and cut to size using scissors.
    5. Peel one half of the back off of the adhesive mat, align the unexposed section to a straight surface like the existing countertop. Ensure the side with the thicker gap between glue dots is aligned to overlap the next sheet.
    6. Once the sheet is in the correct position, stick it to the wall. Then peel the bottom half and stick that to the wall.
    7. Repeat this process until the desired area is covered. Use the rubber float to push the adhesive mat to the wall for a permanent bond.
    8. Hold the tile up to the wall to determine where it will need to be cut to size.
    9. Use the utility knife to cut the mesh behind the tile.
    10. Peel the plastic coating off of the adhesive mat, and carefully place each tile section onto the adhesive.
    11. Once the tile is in the correct position, push it in place with a rubber float.
    12. Repeat this process until the wall is covered with the tile.
    13. Fill the gaps between the tile with the premixed grout and the rubber float. Apply it diagonally until all of the spaces between the tile have been filled with grout.
    14. Fill the bucket with water and using a clean sponge, wipe the excess grout off the tile, again diagonally. Be careful to only wipe the grout off the face of the tile, not the grout in between the tiles.
    15. After 24 hours, a haze may appear on the tile. To remove it, wipe the tile with a rag.
    Resources:
To attach the tile to the wall, Tom used the SimpleMat tile setting mat, manufactured by Custom Building Proucts (www.custombuildingproducts.com).
Tom installed Desert Sunset mosaic tile, manufactured by MS International (www.msistone.com).
The homeowner selected “Earth” colored premixed grout, which is also manufactured by Custom Building Products (www.custombuildingproducts.com).
All of these, plus the other supplies and materials for this project, including razor knives, painter’s tape, and sponges, are sold at home centers.

@@joekind1 Ha!! Good one Joe.🤣. Funny enough, many Australians and New Zealanders will also add an "r" to the end of a word ending in a vowel sound like "ah" or "uh". Example: Idea-r, Spa-r, Sauna-r, Diarrhea-r, etc. And yet, they and Tommy, will drop the "r" where we are used to hearing it. Such as Car, Far, Beer, Bear, etc... Accents are fun.

It’s nice watching Tom teach and help these people! And even if he does some things a little differently they always come out nice and he’s not a “hack” by any means.

Now, years later, I did a search on how to install a hanging light from the ceiling with no outlet on the ceiling and I got Scott's videos. I CAN NOT STOP WATCHING! The videos are not only informative, but they are RELEVANT to our times. By that I mean that he uses the newest technologies of today and makes it look simple. The videos are a good pace so one can not only watch, but retain the information so you can DIY!

We did a mosaic tile install just like this in our house a few years back, but ours used the herringbone style that he showed and we tiled about six inches above the countertop along the whole wall. We did have some outlets and switches to deal with getting around but as he said they don't need to be neat because you'll just cover them with the plates.

It's an improvement from the bare wall, but I think it would look better with a border on each side. She needs to get some end pieces for the sides, preferably all the same color to make a border. Could do that in 20 minutes, and would be very cheap.

    • @msmegs93
      @msmegs93 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeh, I was wondering myself about end pieces as well, but I think that Tom's idea here was all about DIY for a beginners, and thought it maybe too complicated to cut end pieces for beginners, cause you need tile cutters, etc. Wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Tom ended up doing that for her after the cameras stopped rolling- he's such a nice guy and a pro.

New things usually scare people, did he have experience with it or was he just afraid since it was new? I installed a waxless toilet seal and a plumber came to fix a different problem, the pipe under my floor, well when he removed the toilet he threw away my reusable waxless seal and put a wax seal on. Obviously he had never seen one before or else he would know not to throw it away...some of these old guys are afraid of anything new.

Mr. Silva, I removed my back splash and drywall for electrical reasons. Do you think that I need to use construction adhesive to put the new drywall up or will the screws be enough? Thanks!

I ordered a custom sized brushed stainless steel sheet (online) for behind the stove. Top slides up behind fan. Adhered to wall with caulk. Easy, looks good, not expensive.

I tiled my whole entire backsplash and had no previous experience and it turned out great. Agree this looks unfinished. Should have at least put some larger tiles around it as a frame and paint the rest of the wall.

Now if they decided to do the whole wall instead of just the stove top, would it still be okay to use the sticky sheets or go with plaster?

  • @epenaloza52

I have a question im currently doing the same project but the client wants it flush with the 3/4 backsplash thats already installed there... would i need to put a few sheets of cement boards behind it so that wjen i use my cement and the mosaic it'll me flush with it!?... or can i just put a piece of plywood to act as a cement board... first time doing something like this

Great job and great instruction, but the design of the backsplash doesn't seem to match too well. Too much brown!

I thought it would have looked better if they did the whole wall instead of just behind the cooktop.

I disliked this 90s kitchen and I know very well, it probably cost them 80k+ if they had it done. Lol. Cabinets being cheap laminate. I don't like the handles.. it's dated.
The other thing, you'll notice it all goes right up, not even having to cut ONE tile. Lol

  • @Hogger301
    @Hogger301 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree with others, for a kitchen that size, and visual appeal . Should have done the whole wall.

Can new laminate back splash be installed on top of original? or best to remove old first.

  • @matthewcarey3148

What about the outside edges of the tiles? Do you just caulk those? Or do you grout those edges?
