- This is just a quick 'glimpse' around the Ark Royal, as she heads from her last ever foreign trip in Hamburg, back to Portsmouth. Her last ever crew will bring her to her home port, where she will be decommissioned (stripped of all usable, valuable and sensitive assets) and then, sadly, scrapped. As you can see, some of the crew seem, not surprisingly, deflated.
Hi, yes, just the one. HMS Illustrious, but sadly also due to be scrapped soon (circa 2014). It's sad to think that we once had the greatest Navy in the world and now, well, it's just pathetic really, especially considering that as an island nation, we rely tremendously on our maritime commitments. Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it.
Thanks my dad bought me this when I was training brings back happy tearful memories do it all over again
Thanks for the tour, was on her 90 - 93 hated every minute but nice to have a trip down memory lane the only regret was not getting out sooner
Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it - I'm assuming that if you hated every minute (as I hated 'most' of my time onboard), that you were a WAFU....... I was, and hated the 'ship stuff' we had to do. Glad you enjoyed the tour!
@@Professorclown no mate I was a Stoker, I did 6 months as a badger of which I actually enjoyed, I found the air dept. a good bunch. Still great to have a tour down memory lane though. I also served on Illustrious 93-96 I enjoyed my time on there but that ship went down hill for me in my last year. Only regret was not getting out sooner so I could get an apprenticeship I left a day after my 24th birthday so no longer qualified for an apprenticeship.
90 - 91, two westlants and the east med. Hard work but some of the runs ashore were epic! 5E1 mess, happy days.
Really nice to see your 5 deck dash, thanks for the memories
Thankyou for making this vid, never served on ark but did both lusty and vince on 801 sqn, I loved my time onboard.
What a maze, I don't think I could live in a place like that, especially sleeping down a hole. Thanks for the tour.
Thank you for your comment. It's not really that bad - you soon get used to it, and it has all the 'creature comforts you really need.👍
great to see the fwd mech workshop again ,loved that ship ...and was worried you were going to attempt a five deck dash without anti-flash on.
If I was a braver man, I would have done the 5 deck dash with ONLY anti-flash on (naked, apart from hood and gloves, for the civvy viewers)........ XD
@@Professorclown its the tried and tested method of 5 deck dashing..... the ultimate was a 2 deck,5 deck dash in one go , ive seen it done , kinda wish i hadnt
I worked in HQ1...sometimes on the telephone exchange. I remember how you could connect the lines from external calls.
Many a time i had Jack the lad, chatting with the ball and chain on one line and his sweethearts on the other two.
Great days, miss dearly. You loose contact over the years. Cheers shippers great video.
Too sad decommission a beaut like that. Thanks for sharing.
I was onboard for this. Great ship. RO7 🔥
You're welcome. Sorry if it seemed a bit 'corny', but it was really a last minute bit of improvisation, as it was the last ever operational day for the fleet flagship and I thought it would be quite poignant to show the what the last ever crew were up to. A sad day indeed.
4:25 That lad is JT. Now a PO on 824 NAS.
Yes, that's Jonny Taylor, he was a great lad, so really pleased he's made PO. He'll be a chief in no time!👍
Out of the 3 she always scrubbed up the best.
Hey knocker, shame you didn't come up to 3E or 6H... Great memories buddy, hope you are well.
Is that 'Whisky'? I did get down to 6H, but I think I got totally mashed......... What was at 3E, all I can think of is the Chogi laundry (just above my FRPP!)?
No Jase. 3E AV workshops of course...
@@Professorclown 4;1 was my frpp ,back in the teddy bear suit days .
@@TheChunkychap I was volunteered as I/C of FRPP 4.1 and we ALWAYS got 'hit'! Yeah, can't say I really miss action stations, but I was lucky enough to have a good team (WAFUs and fish-heads). 👍😉
@@Professorclown do you remember our other ship , the pussers rum , we had some engine problems on the devizes locks , great times.
Scupper me knocker you anchor faced ......lmao nice one ...love tech support civi😉
junglie ex Happy days, shipmate! You've probably got more sea time than me! 👍🏻🤣
The skipper had a Jag onboard?!
great video. bit of an eye opener for an ex submariner
Hi John, thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the 'large' compartments/spaces on the Ark....... As a WAFU Tiff, we tended to be spoiled, mainly by being land/air station based. I won't tell you how much sea time I've done in 27 years - that would just be cruel......... Take care, shipmate, and thanks again!
Served 91-93 Air dept , ships company
A sad day for the once great royal navy.
Great video, now linked on the new Ark Royal website - arkroyal.net
Ah bollocks, thought it was the REAL Ark, not the plastic TDC.
Sorry - can't watch
We are a shadow of our former selves
Shame on Blair and his successors
What a waste 😕
My old class mate from hms Cambridge part 2 training, Simon Cox was warrant officer warfare on board the ark. He went to hms fife and I went to hms intrepid. Great days. I think I know your face knocker, from nelson, circa 87/88?
Hi Ron ('Mac" or even 'Ruby', maybe?)..... Si Cox may ring a bell, but I'm an ex-WAFU, so I'm not sure if it's me you remember or another 'Knocker', maybe. I joined up as a Tiff, back in May '88 (Fisgard Sqn, Warsop division). I left in 2015, after 27 years (+ '2OE 5'). I was part of the final crew on the Ark - very sad to see her and the Sea Harriers go (scrapped, of course). Chaos of modern politics - leaving us high and dry, with absolutely no strike capability for ten years.
It was never an ARK ROYAL! That died in late 1970s!
