The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.
A proclamation of the holy gospel according to Saint Mark. Glory to you, o Lord.
On that day as evening drew on, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let us cross to the other side." Leaving the crowd, they took Jesus with them in a boat just as he was. And other boats were with him. A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat so that it was already filling up. Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion. They woke him and said to him, "Teacher do you not care that we are perishing?" He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Quiet! Be still!" The wind ceased and there was great calm. Then he asked them, "Why were you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?" They were filled with great awe and said to one another, "Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?"
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
As most of you know as I have said it here quite a few times I have been to the holy land several times. I often lead pilgrimages and the ones to the holy land are my favorite. At present things are somewhat difficult because of all of the conflicts but I have to admit that after all of these trips, the words of the scripture are never the same to me because you can see the actual places in your mind. As I reflected on the gospel today I found myself back in Israel sitting on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. I was imagining Jesus walking along the shore. And then I started thinking about getting into the boat. And all I could think of was what a strange and awesome sight. Just the fact that here I am in this holy place. I think of that boat and I think of what it must have been like to have Jesus asleep and the storm come up or to have him walking on the water. It must have been a very moving experience but I also have to admit to you that I was quite disappointed when I got there because when I got there I expected to see this huge great big sea. I'm from Chicago. And we are on the shores of the great Lake Michigan. You can't even see the other side. And here this Sea of Galilee, I kept thinking to myself, how big is it? Is it a sea? You can see the other side! How strange! And for the storm to come up that way it must have been something that happened very quickly. There are storms that come up in our lives as well. Many of us have storms. There seems to be a raging storm going on right now. And I'm sure that many of us can see ourselves crying out to the Lord with the same words. Doesn't it matter to you that we are going to drown? Those words, as I said, can be spoken of today, especially with everything that is going on in the middle east. Yes, Jesus cares. If Jesus didn't care I don't think that we would have made it this far. There are also times in our lives when we have to try and steer the boat ourselves. Even through the storm. So take the time in your own life. Look at where you are. Ask the Lord to come into your life and listen to the words of Jesus. Quiet. Be still. Know that he is God. Amen.

Thank you Fr. Brian for a beautiful Mass. My car is broken down and I live in rural Arkansas and cannot get to my church which is about 30 miles away. I am about to turn 77 years old in two months and I rely on my car, for I live alone . Please say a special prayer that they find out what is wrong with it and it isn't too expensive. Heart of the Nation Masses have always be where I go to on the Sundays when I can't get to my church. God Bless you
