Simto I cired when i got my G1 Hot Rod. I'm 18 now, but i always chose the G1 stuff over Bayformers. Hot Rod was my favourite also and still is. I was 6 when i got my Hot Rod and still got it next to my Masterpiece hot rod and my G1 Rodimus Prime.

Great vid. Strange how Takara have now had two cracks at a masterpiece Hot Rod and still can't quite nail it. Wish they would do an MP Jazz and Galvatron
Overall I like this figure - the tires look a bit small to me.... and I think that there should be a bit more of multi colors in the paint especially on the head sculpt to show off his "horns" on the helmet... I like the idea of the matrix - I am wondering if they are going to do a trailer to connect to him and turn into armor for Rodimus....
Cheers for the double hinge bit towards the end with the bonnet. It was hard to get in between. Was a nightmare to do and instructions don't show it at all.
They don't call him Hot Rod because they know him as Hot Rodimus in Japan. Nothing to do with copyright. TakaraTomy is in charge of producing Transformers for Japan just like how Hasbro for America. Naturally some names are going to be different, like how Optimus Prime is known as "Convoy" in Japan.
Awesome, I do love the cartoon colours on this guy. I only got the Hasbro MP Rodimus (doh) before this one. I agree on the chest too, MP09'S looked nicer
You got me more excited now. Can't wait! I too appreciate Hot Rod. I know the character gets a lot of hate but Optimus passed the torch to him so who am I to argue against Optimus? Lol. That's like me arguing with my childhood lol. I just can't lol.
I like this figure better than the original Rodimus. That first one I'm scared to get because it looks like I could break him from just looking at him or breaking on him wrong. LOL
i really like how it looks but i still prefer the first mp RODIMUS, specially the chest, this one they could have added another joint to angle it a bit and take care of that huge square plank he has right now, and im sure mostly is because of the matrix compatibility, on the other hand i love how simmilar it looks to the prebious one, but in this smaller scale, as soon as some third party make a better chest for him, it will be PERFECT
I should probably add to the fact about Hot Rod's flat chest: It was like that in most scenes, even on Rodimus Prime. If you looked at it from the side, it was kind of flat. I saw a few scenes of the movie to make sure of this fact. The sides make it look like it is curved in those scenes. I don't intend sound critical or anything, but I'd figured I'd let you know.

I thought the little human figure worked OK, in terms of scale...I just ordered the KO version of this and it's actually a slight bit of an improvement. Same figure, except tighter joints and comes with a matrix.
Download google translator to your smartphone and scan the text with the app. I did with with many of my MP boxes and there's some cool stuff printed on the the packages.
I like the magnifying parts. He's perfect alt mode size! Too bad the exhaust pipes cover the rear lights from the side view. I agree with the headlights on the bot mode and the chest. I thought they should have hid them in bot mode and made an ab section. Regarding the missing matrix - Hot Rod is not worthy enough for the matrix.
1. Funny when MP-10 came out they showed him shaking hamds with MP-09 and no one had a problem with the scale back then, now it's suppose to be off. Seeing that Hotrod wasn't based on a real car MP-09 could be completely correct? 2. I'm a sucker for punishment but I still want a MP-09. Is there a link where you can get a list of the problem areas and fix them before they break so that you have a good MP-09? 3. Paul you have been the only reviewer who kept your MP-09. Glad of that since you are the only one to show the differences. I wish you would have showed the back pack area and compared that part as well. Is there a 3rd party making one as well?
+Marvin Lee I think for MP-09, Hot Rod scales nicely with MP-10. No doubt about it. Which is why i think keeping him as Rodimus Prime in your collection and adding Hot Rod, works. I would say the BEST way to avoid the problems of MP-09 would be to try and find the Hasbro version. They improved several areas on him. The backpack on Hot Rod sticks out as far as the Rodimus Prime figure. However, Hot Rod has a much more secure backpack than Rodimus. That was one issue with the MP-09 mold, it didn't lock in too securely and would detach often. Hot Rod doesn't have that problem.

Great review. Really glad I didn't get the original masterpiece Hotrod/rodimus figure. I never cared for Rodimus prime, so I would on!y display his as Hotrod if I had brought it. So this works perfectly for me. And of cause makes me really excited to see a masterpiece Arcee.
May get some hate, but I love this guy, he's my favourite MP - yeah because of character love, but I just really like the mould, compared to the original MP they did too, thank god i didn't get him!
Hasbro has released Soundwave, Optimus, Grimlock, Acid Storm, Sunstorm, Starscream, Prowl, and Bluestreak. You are way better off getting the Takara ones.

Maybe your not good at transforming??? Because all of the reviews of hot rod, i never saw them struggling with the wheels so maybe your the problem....
I really prefer the curvyness of MP-09. I know its less accurate to both the cartoon and the toy, but I much prefer the look to this guy's very angular appearance. Really, there are a lot of things MP-09 did better in my opinion (and of course a lot it did worse), it had so much more detail, without going over the top. And of course, we all know how much nicer MP-09's chest looks in robot mode. Overall I guess I can't really say I like either of them. MP-09 just looks so much nicer, except for its weird lower legs, except its plagued by horrific QC issues, and this guy, I can't bring myself to like because of how much nicer MP-09 looks. Oh well, I"ll probably never see it in stores anyway.
and if they do I bet they will make the transformation kinda? like this but with the legs sticking out and they can tab into the trailer, anyone agree?
you did a great and outstanding review, great job optibotimus. Though i personaly think that this is a much worser figure than MP 09 , in terms of toon accuracy, i think a direct scaled down version of mp 09 would have been great.
Brandon Gutierrez The thing is, the engineering of MP-09 was entirely built around the ability to transform him between Hot Rod and Rodimus, so the only thing they could really do to build a figure that was only Hot Rod was to start entirely from scratch.
The biggest complain that i saw in other videos was the fact that his legs were to thin.. personally i don't see it, but what you think about it, Paul? So far, i only have Prowl (MPs are rare and too expansive here on Brazil....), but i am happy for just having one :)
I can't get the tab behind his neck to lock into the backpack. The tab is angled just a little lower than the slot. Seems like the engine is in the way. Help please.
I think I'm glad I passed on this guy. The alt mode does look really nice, but the bot mode looks seriously compromised (more so than some others) and that flat chest... But deep down, Hot Rod has never really appealed to me that much. His character arc is so compressed that it's hard to like him compared to most G1 characters.

+Stormrider X Not really a problem. As i've talked about time and time again, my surface area is curved so it takes a bit of balancing sometimes and proper angling of the ankles on some figures to get them to stand properly. That's all
The chest taper advantage of mp-09 doesn't make sense at all. Right now mp-09 looks like he has a shark's tooth for a chest. His upper body really looks ugly next to mp-28 with exposed joints, dumpy barrel chest, and over extended edges. Mp-28 feels like such a more refined figure than many of the masterpiece line.
This is a love letter to the original G1 toy - simply fantastic.

His proportions look wack to me. Huge chest and tiny legs. Might be an improved toy but I prefer MP-09 as a display piece.

Thank God this thing doesn't "bother him too much". I'm not sure how we would sleep knowing that Paul was bothered by his expensive Japanese figure.
I like original G1 Prime better than the MP reissue. Also I like that Hot Rod look a little different from the cartoon with torso.

I was looking trough some slide pictures and there was special little spot in the box for the matrix so I’m not sure what you are talking about
That chest. That is my only issue with it. Paint looks good, and he looks solid

It realy looks so sweet. But you are correct when you address the flat chest. There sould idd be some more reliëf and detail in that chest.
No way is this and mp10 scaled correctly with each other and the rest of the mp line , no way no how. Maybe alt mode but certainly not in bot mode
He doesn't look as fragile as his older version during the transformations.

I can't get the tab behind his neck to lock into the backpack. The tab is angled just a little lower than the slot. Seems like the engine is in the way. Help please.

Try tabbing the torso into the waist, that usually helps.
I think I'm glad I passed on this guy. The alt mode does look really nice, but the bot mode looks seriously compromised (more so than some others) and that flat chest...
But deep down, Hot Rod has never really appealed to me that much. His character arc is so compressed that it's hard to like him compared to most G1 characters.

+Stormrider X Not really a problem. As i've talked about time and time again, my surface area is curved so it takes a bit of balancing sometimes and proper angling of the ankles on some figures to get them to stand properly. That's all

Why do you think Takara remakes figures they already made ? As oppose to making new g1 characters i.e. Jazz,hoist , long haul ect...

Really like him but ye chest needed attention. Car mode brilliant.
The chest taper advantage of mp-09 doesn't make sense at all. Right now mp-09 looks like he has a shark's tooth for a chest. His upper body really looks ugly next to mp-28 with exposed joints, dumpy barrel chest, and over extended edges. Mp-28 feels like such a more refined figure than many of the masterpiece line.
