God that short story brought me all the way back to Olde Queens Tavern in the early 00s...
Congratulations on 400 episodes! Huge accomplishment! Why are these hires so laborious for Greg? I like Smith, but why can't we ever get a real shocking (good way) hire...
Congrats on your 400 episode and your diligent work keeping Rutgers fans informed. Keep chopping.
Watching this episode 400 times in a row!
If I might be permitted a Broadbentian analogy: Sperber only has a learner’s permit and thus Smith needs to be in car with him because Schiano is too busy. Sperber we are hopeful will get his real license in a year or so.
400 episodes and still going
No issues with Robb Smith. He’s a competent coach who works well with Greg. Let’s see how he does. And that’s my 400 cents.
400th episode!
Question. What are the salaries for Smith and Sparber. I know we had sufficient budget but I'm curious on the differential. How does Smith take this position if Greg says "you're really going to be training Sparber to be the next DC. Interesting
Great pod (to cope to). Congrats on the 400
Huge GOBIDS to Mike! Congrats on 400 eps guys.
Oh, and congratulations 🎉 on 400! 👏🏻
congrats on 400 episodes!
Geeez. I think Robb is a little better than 3 a.m leftovers. He had success on special teams, as DC under Flood with top 10 defense and got better in year two with a less talented team with injuries. Kirk Ciarocca also was fired 3 times before coming back and being better. Robb certainly is a steady hand that can play mentor for 2-3 years.
@@Scarlet-RogueSports Kirk was only fired twice and rebuilt his career with Fleck for many years before rejoining Rutgers….
@RutgersFootball1 He was fired from Rutgers, Penn State and Minnesota.
@@Scarlet-RogueSports Minnesota never fired Ciarrocca
@@Scarlet-RogueSports Minnesota never fired Ciarrocca
@RutgersFootball1 I stand corrected if that's the case. I thought I remembered him being on the outs with Fleck..
400 episodes, thanks fellas

It is what it is! I'm interested in seeing what our young co-dc can bring to the table.
Hopefully sparber is a stud and takes over maybe as soon as next year 🤷♂️
💥 Congrats on epi 400
Greg will probably have a ton of defensive input no matter who the DC is honestly
Okay guys, both yourselves and your audience should now all put on your tinfoil hats(sponsored by Reynolds) because I have a major conspiracy theory about this hire. There is NO WAY in hell that Schiano spends two months vetting a guy to be a co defensive coordinator(with no play calling experience) to not be calling plays. My guess is that the new guy from JMU is a Wunderkind(Ivy League) moving up the coaching ranks quickly. Sparber will actually be the one calling plays and Smith is just there for Sparber to learn from. The co title for Smith is just for appearances. C’mon guys, like I said, there is NO WAY Schiano takes this much time just to hire a retread for no reason. SPARBER will actually be the one calling the plays.
@@lawsoncoates8334 hate to break it to you, but Smith is calling plays.
Robb Smith will coach 400 days in a row. :)
Did we deserve a better more proven DC? Yes. But I wouldn't get too worked up about this hire. It's on the defensive side which is where Schiano cut his teeth and he has the entire off-season to figure this out. Plus, it's only for one season in case it's a failure and he does have an assistant to help modernize the scheme along with Schiano looking over their heads. And Sparber did have a very successful season as an assistant with James Madison, so if Schiano liked him enough to give him this opportunity, I would give him the benefit of the doubt that maybe he's a coach on the rise. Richie pointed it out too, saying he's like a mini-Schiano. It's possible Schiano sees something in Sparber but can't give him the keys just yet. So bring in Smith who coached over him at Duke and of course under Schiano and you can start to see what the thinking might be here. Besides, I'm not sure Smith has coached with this much talent before. And if we can stay healthy, it should end up better than last season when we had a better DC running the show. 95th in total defense is bad. It could end up just fine. Or it can be a total disaster and forget everything I just said. 🤨
Defensive Coordinator is actually not a pivotal role with Greg because he installs his defense. So whoever we have is calling his system. And from what I remember Smith wasn’t awful in game decision wise
I agree it’s not flashy or fun at all, but it isn’t the end of the world. Can’t see Smith being here for longer then 2 years
That entire story you read was really depressing. 😳🥺😧😰😢😭
Don't EVER read it Again!
I think Mike's being a little dramatic lol
That was tough to listen to guy!...I expect it from Richie but... Mike and Alex...it was a disappointment!
He can’t get much worse than 400 yards a game
He's the analytics guy 💥
Schiano builds teams that win and can make good teams, but has never been a coach that can win championships. This is a massive failure for him as a coach and a sign that frankly we're seeing him hit his ceiling.
I think we all know that RU has to win this year to break through to the 'next level' of program development. We have the talent, we have the money, but we're missing the right head coach -- and the one we have has had serious weakness that seem like they're coming back to haunt him.
The hard reality is RU is not a destination, but a way-station for coaches, so I seriously doubt we can pull in anyone better who actually cares about RU and football. I hope I'm wrong. There's a lot at stake here. I'm glad I'm not a gambler, because our odds are long!
Maybe we got a coordinator and analytics guy working together as OC, could work💥
2 years?
Should've offered Ulbrich from the Jets. He already has a house in Jersey
You guys are unfair to Smith. Rutgers problem has been lack of talent. Rutgers has had nothing after GS-1. This year was awful with no depth on defense.
WHAT OTHERS INTERVIEWED FOR THE JOB?????
@@ishammc7211 Hetherman, Rossi, Campanile were some of the confirmed candidates.

Long time, 30 plus year Rutgers fan and season ticket holder here and I just love your podcast. But I need you to stop with the jokes about cheerleaders/moms of 4/and women metaphors. Respectfully, stop it. You don’t need to put women down to make your point.
Classic and I I've made that same mistake with females several times lol/smh. Folks don't want to work for GS
Maybe tape your sponsor’s ads, instead of reading bad copy. Also you are sponsored by an apparel company, try not to wear the competitor’s garments on air. I am sure it would be appreciated by your sponsor.

100% agree. The sponsors ads present a bored reading obligation. But that’s Mike and his normal comment I don’t give a crap about your opinion
