We can see that you have have been riding for many years and have a life-time of knowledge. I do like your common sense approach with your horses.

Funnily enough it's your interaction with Talos and how he learns what you teach him, that draws me in, rather than the working of the quintain. It's such a joy to see horse and rider working together like that.

  • @WBtimhawk

Somewhat off topic for you maybe but I would be really interested in seeing you experiment throwing javelins vs lance. In ancient Greece, there was a debate (circa Xenophon's time) about which was better to equip your line cavalery. IIRC Xenophon thought that one light and one heavy javelins was the best combo. Throw the light one at your max effecive range then quickly transition to your heavy one and either use it as a lance or throw it aswell. He must have known what he was talking about but.... then the macedonian/thessalian cavalery used lances instead and became the new reference. I always thought that was quite an interesting puzzle.
Anyhow thank you so much for sharing those videos with us !

Isn't it possible that the sand bag's purpose could be, in addition to providing weight to the arm, to train the horse, i.e. to acquaint him to having moving objects hurling around him when he's on a galop? As I understand it, horses have a great field of vision, and might therefore be able to pick up the movement of the bag. Maybe then different colours could be more or less visible to the horses eye, which would allow different exercises to be performed?
If that were the case, it would seem to me like an explanation of the common idea that quintains could unhorse the inexperienced or inattentive runner : even without being hit by the sandbag, the latter could spook the horse if not controlled apropriately.
Then again, Talos didn't appear to budge too much despite the swinging of the arm...

I have found myself praising my dog, a Fox Terrier mix we rescued, much more than previously. This should be attributed to watching you work with your animals. Seems to be working, too, unless he sees something that sets off the prey instinct, then it is off to the races, or more likely, the end of the leash.
Enjoy your videos, I have often wondered about that quintain slapping someone in the back, seems the only way that would swing fast enough is to have a spring, or perhaps no weight counterbalance at all? Hollywood nonsense anyway, much like the movie Braveheart.

Greetings and thanks for the cool channel. I think there must be a mechanism/modification to the quintain to allow it to spin only half a turn on each hit, and then stop, ideally. That would save you time and effort, from having to adjust the bar's angle after each successful hit, as I think you often do, based on this video. Ask around, research, you never know. There must be some way though, if I thought of it, surely someone else has before me, and implemented it.

I wonder if a few cavaletti laid on the ground at the edge of the path of travel would create a visual "lane" to help Talos find his line. (:

    • @warriormaiden9829
      @warriormaiden9829 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That would work if the quintaine were to 'reset' itself to the same position every time it was hit. As his is set up, you have to pick a different line each new run, which would mean you have to move the cavaletti each time you approach. :)

    Amazing video.
This to me is an example of why different horses had different roles and prices during the middle ages. A 14th century riding horse of around £5 won't behave like a fully bred and trained £20 to £52 destrier.

Seeing those values listed threw my brain off for a bit until the realisation hit home, oh yea back then currency is different than it is today. Even 5 pounds would already be quite a lot, close to the yearly wage of many skilled labour jobs if I'm not mistaken.

Jason is a great horseman considering he didn't train in the Cloud District of Whiterun. I would know. I actually advise the Jarl on political matters. My input is invaluable, of course. But this is all probably a bit over your guys' heads.

He received the OBE because he is the founder of a VERY successful video games company. This is how he spends his discretionary income.

Just curious did you name Talos after the greek bronze giant or god from d&d/elder scrolls series?

Not to be overly pedantic, but the hexagonal thing you were screwing on the top is a nut. The other part is the bolt. 😁

Lol. In my experience, it's not uncommon to use the wrong term. I work with hardware quite a bit, and coworkers will make fun of me, because I'll misname a washer or nut cause I'm lost in thought while trying to explain something.
