Just cut it short. You will get more branches and leaves. Fertilize it with very diluted npk solution every week. Mist the whole plant several times a day.
It works in every plant.
My banyan is brought just 2 weeks ago and I cut all the leaves and tip. New shoots are growing now.
It worked for tulsi plant too. It was dying but now within 2 weeks it's bushy.
The answer is - Trim-fertilize-mist regularly and change soil in a year or two. 🙏

Please dont try to virtue signal. All it takes for a new tree to germinate is a single fig fruit and a banyan tree produces thousands of them in a year. Or simply one branch can also be rooted. There is no need for the owner of this bonsai to make his art go to waste, i would suggest that he either gives it his next generation, sell it to another bonsai enthusiast but it should remain as a bonsai

Mist it regularly with cold water. New shoots will come from each node. I have done this on peepal bonsai with success of 80% on all nodes. It works miraculously.

Keep defoliating the extra large leaves. 3 or more times gives fresh and small leaves. My banyan tree had more than a feet long leaves. Next time the leaves will be 60-70% of the previous size.

Tie moss fibres on the trunk and keep it moist. May need six months to develop strong Ariel roots to bear the air. Keep misting the whole plant. In rainy season all the ficus species develop lots of Ariel roots from trunk and branches.

Avoid winter and extreme summer. Rest seasons are ok. Create artificial rain by misting. That way the plant grows enormously into thick bushy bonsai. The plant doesn't die at any cost.

Germinating banyan seeds is very difficult. Usually in nature birds eat the figs and acid in their stomach activates the seeds which when pooped out germinates. It’s better if you try out cuttings instead
