@Weemizo yes and no. Microsoft is known for the fact that that they bring out good and then bad and then good operating systems. Microsoft can learn from there old mistakes and make a Windows phone OS that is as good as Windows 7/10
@Weemizo Nope. The only problem was the lack of apps. And most OSs today are inspired by windows phone and windows 8's flat UI, so MS was way ahead of their time
It still baffles me, that in times where being environmentally friendly, companies refuse to work on a 1-for-all solution. Samsung Dex comes close, but is still weighed down by Android, the same issue that the Surface Duo runs into. Apple's getting closer to perfecting the iPad as a 1-for-all solution, but even with that M1-chip in their Pro models, they still left out some features that would have made the iPad a fully fledged, smaller, lighter laptop. Pretty sure it is no coincidence. These companies still prefer we carry around 3 different systems with us, whilst trying to come across as caring for the environment.
The thing is, though, that often there’s need to use multiple devices simultaneously. But you do have a point, some people would benefit from an all in one depending on lifestyle and career

I really like my Duo 2 so far, software oddities aside. The software bugs are nothing huge. I like that this is different, and the screen aspect ratio feels better than the ultra wide of most phones. That long, skinny brick design is getting old. I don't mind at all that the phone needs to open to answer. It auto answers if you flip the second screen all the way around. Being that it feels like a book, reading books or comics on this thing feels great. If there was one real criticism from me it is that the default Microsoft keyboard, which you basically have to use, leaves a bit to be desired and needs more customization options.

I would absolutely love a windows version with ryzen 5000U series mobile chip in this thing. 5000U series processors are made for thin and lite laptops while having double the core counts and integrated graphics of equivalent intel chip. So if they make it a inch bigger and lil bit thicker they can definitely fit that chip, get rid of the camera bump and a lil bit more battery maybe. It'll be the best selling foldable.
I have been thinking so much about that. All they had to do is plan for it during the development and not after thought. Design the motherboard such that that space for the camera inside the frame is deliberate. I bet they can find a spot for a smaller pen design like those of galaxy notes. The back glass is cracked, but DecalGirl sent me a really nice skin so I don't notice that. It is THE best device for navigation and music in the car. Couldn't care less about the lack of cameras - the Surface Duo pairs well with dedicated camera apps and is supreme for photo editing with sRGB screen support and all that real estate. The hinge gap is no bother. The initial software bugs are mostly resolved now. My finger scanner has broken, so I am going to buy another Surface Duo. Best phone ever.
MS has all the tools to make Windows work on ARM and on devices like these. Windows 10 on phones and Windows Phone 8 had a good things going for it but MS botched it and then dropped the ball with it. MS Office suite on Windows Phones was way behind Android and iOs apps and that's the first party app! Notifications were a nightmare on Windows phone devices and they never did work properly and settings on Widows Phone 8 was just menu with random items. It did get better with Windows 10 but a lot of phones were cut from support even if they had performance to support it. I do agree that MS Duo 2 is being held back by android since windows already has wonderful multiscreen support and yes the lack of outside screen makes that more like foldable tablet rather than foldable phone.
Hey Jerry, I was expecting you would have bent it also from the inside out or the other way round if that's how you will call it. Just curious about what will happen.🤔
Windows Phone... didn't exactly go so well though. If Microsoft had stuck with Windows Mobile and made improvements maybe things would have been different, but now in 2021 it really doesn't make sense for Microsoft to have yet another crack at the phone market, in software terms. Remember, Android apps are coming to Windows 11 so you will get interoperability on that front. As for whether it would sell, the Dell Venue 8 was probably the best known 8" Windows tablet when it launched, but Dell don't sell anything that small now. Even Microsoft's own Surface Go's screen has grown from its initial 10". Full fat Windows apps just aren't designed for screens that small, hence we got touch-friendly UWP apps... which did the same things Android apps did only worse. this phone would be totally different if it had windows as its OS but now it is just another big phone with dual screen... when will MS learn to take advantage of its product without fearing the current trend.
"Luckily we have 2 screens to burn, so I can keep on talking"! 😁 😅 Also yes having a Windows build on this phone would be amazing. I have this device personally and it's very much improved over version 1.
If Qualcomm can actually come out with a M1 competitor and Microsoft can manage to put into a Duo 3, I can't see why we can't have a windows 11 mobile Duo in the future. I'd upgrade to something like that.
I know it'll be similar, but I can't wait for the teardown. I'd be interested if you test the water proofing to see if it can withstand something higher than its rating. And or if there's a way to water proof it I could do if I get the phone! Excited for a teardown tho
I don't understand why some big companies sometimes lack the ability to make the right decision. Why can't Microsoft just decide to use the Windows operating system for their Duo 2? It makes no sense to use Android when you can use windows and make this duo 2 a portal computer.
Agree with Jerrys comments here, Microsoft should never have shelved windows mobile. It is by far the best mobile operating system even by today's standard despite the fact they haven't worked on it for a while. Android and iOS use similar kernel design so they are kinda alike in ways. Windows wasn't and Microsoft had an amazing team during its time, best cameras, smooth phones even on 512mb ram and imo the best user interface for a phone, app tiles were so good and intuitive, None of this boring app icons bullshit. The app problem would have been solved now with their appstore solution that's just out for windows 11. Just port it into the mobile.
I see his statement not so much as blaming Android, but stating the short comings of Android for any foldable mobile device in general. Think about it, why did Android started the development of 12L? They knew foldable will not be successful on current Android design. I think Android 12L is the beginning of robust Os design for foldables such OEM can just do HW, skin the Os, but let the Os do all the heavy lifting that will make foldable do good stuff and solve problems that single screen Phones can not do. All current foldable phone manufacturing are doing independent codes additions to show what foldable can do which might not help Android Os in terms of fragmentation. Let the Os direct and standardize the best use and features for foldables and OEM can add there own values and extras.
"They should release a phone with a Windows operating system. Microsoft would crush the mobile productivity space in ways no one else can." ...They tried that already and failed.
I think this would be abysmal with Windows 11. It would however work perfectly well with Linux. Even Microsoft realizes Linux is a lot more usable when you don't have a huge amount of processing power and/or memory (or just want to run thing efficiently in general).
Microsoft if you are somehow watching this, for your smartphone variant have the start menu screen as the screen of these phones. The issue with your surface series is that they do not have specs of modern devices, it overheats while being idle, and you're charging apple prices for Apple level hardware. You can only pull what apple does with a reputation, so make really good products with hardware of a modern Laptop. People will live with its thickness, no matter how thick. Make it durable and Repairable. This is doable, or you can wait when everyone is doing this, years down the line and keep chasing their tails.
Definitely android is holding it back. It would be much, much greater and more powerful if it ran windows. Specially now that windows 11 runs android applications by default.

Honestly I prefer the duo concept with two screens and a hinge over the folding plastic displays, like yeah its a cool gimmick and sure the break in the screen is a bit of a bummer. But I know a plastic display wouldn't last a week for me without getting scratched and that's just not something I could get behind
Been waiting for that exact thing myself Jerry. A tablet or dual screen device of this size running full fledged windows. Productivity king and i could replace nearly all devices with that single one since its so much more capable. Having a 4G or 5G connectivity with windows in a nice package would be awesome especially now with windows 11 enhancements to touch.

I don't think Android is holding Microsoft back. I think Microsoft can't get their act together and optimize Android for their needs. Other companies managed to do it and Android is pretty solid.
Yea.. im sure you'll going to have a very bad time if its run windows with that spec even with windows rt..
@@VISHVplus I'm not familiar with that specifically, but Samsung, Motorola, Huawei and (heck, even novice) Royle have managed to produce fully functioning devices.

@@YasinHasan I like Windows a lot but recently I've been using my Android smartphone for everything and basically don't use my computer anymore. I guess if I needed to do real graphics or editing (basic I do in my phone and works great) I'll need to get out my PC
@Kenny Kolodor I was referring to Android and foldable devices. Samsung, Motorola, Huawei, OPPO, LG and others managed to make decent (or great) foldable phones on Android while Microsoft can't seem to pull it off.
I really like the no screen when folded. Most people buying a $1400 phone are going to have a smart watch and can use that to view notifications
Most high end phone users like would rather use high end automatic watches compared to smart watches
Thanks for the video. I currently rock a Z fold 3... it's been great, and has held up well. After using it for a year though, still think I'd find multitasking Microsoft's dual-screen setup more effective. I'll wait to see what the Suface Duo 3 brings to the table later this year (or in 2023).
I agree about Android on this phone. They should bring Windows Phone OS back!
@Weemizo yes and no.
Microsoft is known for the fact that that they bring out good and then bad and then good operating systems. Microsoft can learn from there old mistakes and make a Windows phone OS that is as good as Windows 7/10
@Weemizo It really wasn't. I've had 3 windows smartphones with pretty humble configurations and they worked flawlessly (at least performance wise).
@Weemizo Nope. The only problem was the lack of apps. And most OSs today are inspired by windows phone and windows 8's flat UI, so MS was way ahead of their time
Only if they can pull of x86 emulation properly
Zack finally finds the actual issue with this device that other tech reviewers didn't. What a legend.
6:17 - I could imagine the lag, running resource hungry Windows 10 or 11 on this phone 😂
Lets not forget the repairability, hard and software restrictions
Absolutely! It would be amazing to have an actual Windows machine this size! I sometimes use the Dex mode on my S10 and I always wish it was actual Windows OS... or at least pure Linux desktop xD

Why can't you use the Google keyboard?
I agree, it would be soooo cool to have a full windows PC in that format factor. Come on Microsoft!
8" windows tablets werent ready for prime time... with windows 11 supporting android apps natively i feel you are exactly right.
Best way to start my bday, watching a new jerryrigeverything video! NICE!
im surprised manufacturers don't leave a little dent for the bump to fit in when folded. it would work so well and make a really cool connection
I have been thinking so much about that. All they had to do is plan for it during the development and not after thought. Design the motherboard such that that space for the camera inside the frame is deliberate. I bet they can find a spot for a smaller pen design like those of galaxy notes. I think once AMD's NUVIA arm SoC comes out, a Windows Os version of DUO should be very practical and they MUST use USB4

I've had a Surface Duo 1 for a couple of years now - I've not been ind to it. It has not bent out of shape at all.
The software has vastly improved via various updates since this aired
Hey Jerry, I was expecting you would have bent it also from the inside out or the other way round if that's how you will call it. Just curious about what will happen.🤔
God! Longest ad I have ever seen before the actual video. Must really need the money.
Outside of specialist devices like the GPD or Steam Deck, I don't see small screened Windows devices making a comeback.
700 in 6 months : Jerry being SAVAGE 🤣🙌
this phone would be totally different if it had windows as its OS but now it is just another big phone with dual screen... when will MS learn to take advantage of its product without fearing the current trend.

I don't understand why some big companies sometimes lack the ability to make the right decision. Why can't Microsoft just decide to use the Windows operating system for their Duo 2? It makes no sense to use Android when you can use windows and make this duo 2 a portal computer.
Finally! I waited a long time for this video. Thanks! 👌
I always needed full fledged windows on my phone but i guess it's still a dream only
Blaming Android for incompetence of Microsoft devs on this particular product is just gold 😂
I like that you start your videos with you featured in them now😊🎀✨

Even Microsoft realizes Linux is a lot more usable when you don't have a huge amount of processing power and/or memory (or just want to run thing efficiently in general).

*“Everything is good but the bezels ruins it”*
Microsoft if you are somehow watching this, for your smartphone variant have the start menu screen as the screen of these phones.
