  • Downs Link Cycle Trip A guide to Route 222
Welcome to this video/slide guide to the cycle route/ footpath and bridleway that runs between Chists Hospital and Shoreham in West Sussex.
This route is also know as cycle route 222.
The full route runs from Guildford to Shoreham and is known as the Downs Link. Another causality of the short-sighted Conservative government under Dr Beeching in the late 60's.
It is clear that had the railway line survived it would be an important line for many.
However we can still enjoy it today as this video will show.
The video is aimed at the amateur family cyclist and seeks to provide a guide that will allow people to feel confidant before setting out as they can know what to expect.
I had a great deal of help from the FaceBook group "Disused railways of Sussex"
    / 22615392661
Another great source of information can be had here: www.opencyclemap.org/
Search for Shoreham for this route.
I hope you enjoy the video.
(this video would have been up some weeks back but TH-cam has had issues)
This video took 2 days and 8 hours to upload

An excellent commentary, really well produced. I felt sorry for you when the two pubs were closed!
The bit where the route "follows" the Steyning Bypass is almost a folly: the bypass is built on the old railway, so the bypass follows the route, so to speak!
What's the next video? Christ's Hospital to Guildford?
    Great stuff!

MikesMovies Hi Mike, Did Henfield to West Grinstead and return today, really enjoyed it, but a bit alarming when 3 out of control doberman dogs come charging at me though, apart from that was most enjoyable, midweek days best for the downs link i think, not so many dogs. Next target, Henfield to Bramber and back.

Great video of my favorite bike ride. I live on a houseboat in Shoreham, and just got home from a ride to Henfield and back. An update, you can avoid crossing the A283 South of Bramber now, and you are advised to do so. A loop takes you you under a road bridge, adding about half a mile to the distance, clearly signposted.

Wow that is great news, crossing that road is super scary. Cheers Gavin

Thanks, a very nice depiction of the route. I rode it from Bramber up to Cranfield? about 20 years ago, enjoyable but poorly surfaced then, I see some bits are changed, but it is still surfaced in gravel. You said you were going about 8-9mph, if the route were properly surfaced in asphalt/tarmac I should skim my touring cycle along effortlessly at 12-14mph. Gravel is an insult, maybe they should surface all roads in gravel and see what people think of that! Thanks.

great video. Just bought a new bike and living within 5 minutes of the Downs Link I am even more enthusiastic to do the run. Think it may have to be in stages though ! lol

PAUL CARUGATI I know what you mean. Can I also recommended the Havant to Hayling Island ride, be a nice build up to this one. I have a video of that one up as well

+Maurice Ruff Don't know why I can't reply direct to your comment. But the camera was a Panasonic Lumix TZ18 hand held, if I was doing it now I would 100% reccomend a Mobius! You can see one in use on my model rail videos, very small and light.

Thanks very much :) yes closed pubs is bad, but at least the Cat & Canary filled up our water bottles for us! It was a great day out but can't help being sad its not a railway line still! Not sure on the next video but yes Guildford would be the logical choice so as to complete the guide.

Your trip from Christ's hospital to Shoreham is my favourite and it has inspired me to do a lot more cycling now I'm retired. One thing I'd like to know, the camera you used for the trip, can you give me details so I can get one for my bike. Thanks!

Many thanks indeed, not sure about your question to be honest, there are sea front paths but don't know if they are broken

A great video guide but I feel that you should seek help for the Monday drinking/pub obsession - you're on a slippery slope.
