- We all have our own reasons for doing photography - whether you’re a new hobbyist, a long time enthusiast, or pro who does photography for a living - passion was probably what drew you into photography in the first place.
When you first start, everything is exciting, amazing, interesting, new. Naturally, you’ll want to grow and develop. You start to immerse yourself in the photography world more and see the photos taken by others. You might notice that maybe, your photos don’t look like what you’re seeing around you. You either ignore it, or you start to question things: Why doesn’t my photo look as good as that? What am I doing wrong? Why am I spending all this time and money? Is this all worth it? Do I have what it takes?
These questions gave me some food for thought on a recent camping trip. Questioning if your photos are good enough or if you have what it takes to be a good photographer can spiral into a loss of confidence and self doubt. But it definitely doesn’t have to be that way.

Hi Roy, I'm also glad you found me here through Kim 😊 I really enjoyed my chat with her. Thanks a bunch for watching and your kind comments 🙏 Have a wonderful festive season with your nearest and dearest and all the best for 2024! 👍🎄📸
Thanks Valerie for blessing us with one last meticulously crafted video before the end of the year! Very cool those pelicans skimming the water😊 All the best, hope you have a great break and relaxing time with your family😊

Great video. The Kangaroo was a cool surprise, I love it. Photography is so fun.
Hey Marshall, I had a few nice surprises, which made it a great trip 😀 For sure, it can be fun even when things don't quite pan out! Hope you have a fab festive season and New Year 🙏😊👍📸
You hit upon some very important attributes that contribute to the growth in one’s photographic journey. While this growth is extremely important and what we’re all trying to achieve, for me, a big part of the journey is the friendships I’ve made along the way. Thank you for being a part of that. E will definitely get together for another session in the new year. Merry Christmas!
So very true Brett, the relationships and friendships we make along our journeys enrichen our experiences. I'm grateful that you've enrichened mine - thank you for your friendship and support throughout 🙏🙏😊 and I'm looking forward to that continuing and growing over time. I hope you and your family have lovely and relaxing festive season, and best wishes for a brighter 2024. Keep finding inspiration, and inspiring others, through your beautiful photography 🎄📸💚
Lovely words and pictures Valerie. Keep on keeping on‼️👏🎄❤️🙏✌️
Really appreciate your support and comments as always, Markie 🙏 Wishing you all the best for 2024! Take care 💚😊🎄📸
I don’t usually like lectures. But you handled it in a way that didn’t feel condescending. I needed to hear some of these things as I was feeling depressed after my last shoot. It was an impromptu practice shoot but did not turn out well. Poor planning leads to poor results. Thank you for the video.
I'm glad you didn't take offence to this Ken, as it definitely wasn't my intention for it to be a lecture... Rather, more like an uplifting reminder for us not to get too down in the dumps! Sorry to hear that your last shoot didn't go so well - but it's a good reason to go back and give it another try if you get a chance. I think for me, more often than not, things don't go as planned 😆 I've figured I either need to plan better, or lower my expectations! Many thanks for your comments and have a wonderful holiday season 🙏🙂🎄📸
Dear Valerie, this excellent video was the best Christmas present I could have ever imagined, thank you so much. To explain, during the spring of this year I found myself experiencing a terribly stressful event that significantly impacted my mental health with one of the results being that my camera gear has pretty much languished in the bag unused and nothing I did gave me the will to get out there and take some images. I am now on the mend, looking forward to whatever 2024 has in store for us and am inspired by you to ex0lore the wet, windy, wilds of West Wales (UK) with my camera again so, thank you.
May I wish you and those you love a wonderful Christmas and a happy and healthy new year. Terry
Hello Terry, thank you so much for your very kind and warm words 🙏 It really makes me smile inside and out to hear that I've done a little something to make someone else's day a little brighter 😊 I'm sorry to hear about the mental health battle you've had, but am glad that you've pulled through. I can imagine it hasn't been easy to will yourself to get out there (and wet and windy Welsh conditions don't help!) Photography can be so wonderfully therapeutic, so hopefully, even with brief opportunities to snap away here and there, it'll bring you joy again. It has given me a greater appreciation of the beauty of nature and helped me to cope with the stresses of life.
I hope you and your family have a peaceful and relaxing festive season. Wishing you the very best for a much brighter 2024. Take care 👍🎄📸🌞
Such a great video, Valerie - loved it! And some gorgeous images, there, too (especially the mono shot of the bird on the jetty post). My grandfather used to say, “That’s the way the crumbie cookles!” Take care, luv, and all the best for 2024! xo
Many thanks as always for watching and your support Peter 🙏 I had good fun shooting this video. Your grandad was too cute 😄 I hope you get lots of R&R during the holiday season and wishing you and for family all the best for 2024! Take care 👍😊💚📸
This was such a very interesting video to listen too Valerie, luckily I've yet suffer from any self dout yet with my photography, I put this down to not making any plans what to photograph, tne photo always comes second as being out in nature comes first and if I happen to see something I want to capture that is the bonus. Loved those Pelican images Valerie they were stunning. Wishing you a Happy Christmas and looking forward to seeing more of your talented photos and videos in 2024 🎉
Thanks so much for your kind comments Raymond 🙏 and I hope you don't ever experience any self doubt! I completely understand what you mean by your photos being secondary to your experience out in nature. I think that's the way it should be. I hope you get a few chances to get out there over the festive season and all wishing you all the best for 2024. Cheers 😊👍🎄📸
Perfect video Valerie and a great way to finish off 2023!!!😀. Thank you for all you do, we know it’s not easy, but it is appreciated👏🏻👍🏻. You can’t get the shot sitting on the couch🤣
😄 I couldn't agree more about getting off the couch and getting out there! I really appreciate your comments and support as always Barry. Enjoy the holiday season and keep making great memories and magic with your 📸. Best wishes for 2024! 😊🎄👊
@@ValerieMisaPhotographyThank you so very much Valerie!! I really appreciate your comments from the Lightroom Albums, it mean so much😀. I finished 2 more albums today, Road-trip and 2023 Birds, so you can check at your leisure. Hope your holiday time is wonderful!!!!
So sorry Barry, I've been away but am looking forward to seeing more of your beautiful photos in your 2 new albums! Thanks heaps for sharing 😊 Have a great weekend and New Year 🥳🎆🥂
Excellent video Valerie 👏I massively can relate to these topics in photography. Thank you for sharing this 🤝
Thanks a bunch Simeon for your comments and feedback 🙏 I'm really glad that the topics resonated with you and hopefully you quash any of those niggling thoughts when they pop up 😉 Have a great festive season and all the best for 2024 🙂👍🎄📸
@@ValerieMisaPhotography thank you for your kind reply
Hey Valerie! It’s a great message in your video. I was just driving home from a shooting an episode where I touched on similar themes. I started watching yours and was surprised. That’s the community spirit. Ha!
Lovely to see the wonderful wildlife that surrounds you and nice images of them too. Keep up the wonderful work.
Hi Shaun, happy New Year and best wishes for 2024! It's good to know that some of the themes I've touched on in this video resonate with you and others - shows that us photographers are definitely not alone in dealing with some of our photography struggles 🙂
It's always nice to spend a few days off grid, camping and connecting with nature, especially during the warmer months here. I hope you're having a great winter so far, and thanks as always for your comments 🙏👍📸
Wonderful talk, Valerie! I couldn't agree more. Great video! Thanks so much!
Thanks so much for watching, your support and your comments Jon 🙏 I hope you have a fabulous Christmas and New Year. All the free best for 2024! 😊👍🎄📸
@@ValerieMisaPhotography It's my pleasure! I pray that you and yours have a wonderful Christmas and the best New Year ever!
Great video lovely! Nicely done & really positive messaging that can be applied in other aspects of our lives.
As I was watching thought you might consider adding Ocean Whale photography on your list for 2024😊 it would be amazing!!
Hello missy, I hope you've been well and thanks as always for your comments 🙏
You know, I would love to follow the annual hump back whale migration and capture these magnificent mammals up close. I'd also love to do ocean photography one day...But that's a long way off, so I'll just have to settle with dreaming about it for now 😄 Hope you're enjoying the holiday season and wishing you all the best for 2024! 🥳🎆🥂👍
Thanks for a wonderful, thought-provoking, and entirely relevant clip, Valerie. And delivered with your customary charm, warmth, and good humour. (The scene of you with tripod and camera in the sleeping bag was priceless.) I think perseverance - applied with a clear intent and thought - is a most valuable attribute to have. With my writing, I was atrocious when I started out - I wrote as if I was reporting on a chemical analysis - and it took several years before I started to improve. For decades, I wrote almost every single day. And I got better at it. The same applies to my photography, though because of my age and circumstances, I cannot get out every day, so that journey is necessarily somewhat slower. I look upon other photographs, to enjoy them - and examine them - and determine what it is about them that worked, for when I'm out and about. But above all, I need patience, even when I _need_ to get a shot before the creature moves or the light changes. I know I'm improving, albeit slowly. I'll get there, because I wish to. Thanks for the wonderful photos - I like pelicans immensely because they are the galleons of the skies. And never mind the cliches, Valerie: sometimes, when all is said and done, at the end of the day, a good cliche can be just what the doctor ordered.😉 All the best to you and your loved ones for Christmas. I hope you keep safe and have a wonderful 2024.
Thank you so much Mick for your feedback and support throughout the year 🙏 I really appreciate you taking your time to leave comments and they're always a joy to read.😄 Glad you enjoyed me sleeping with my tripod - I can't take myself too seriously! Am also glad to hear that your writing has been a labour of love, an art form which I think you've mastered and provides you with solace. That's important to have - have you thought about writing a book? It's great that photography can supplement your writing, and you should enjoy it at a pace that works for you. Unfortunately we can't all be out there every day - being in the outdoors for little bit is better than none! You've taught me a new word - I now know what a "galleon" is! Very apt description for our friendly giants of the skies!
I hope you and your family enjoy a fantastic festive season and wishing you all the best for 2024! Stay well and take care 😊🎄📸🌞
@@ValerieMisaPhotography I have completed 2 novels, although the first is a morass of typos. Currently, I have suspended the first rewrite of novel 3 - I was dissatisfied with it, and have started another (a spy novel in a steampunk universe), although I have starts on several more. (I'm normally more disciplined than that, but...) Re pelicans: I was at Lakes Entrance last year in November and Lake King in Metung had a great many (a little before dusk), plus some stunning sunsets, but take mosquito repellent - the air is thick with them. One of the first videos of yours that I watched, you mentioned muck boots and I finally got a pair. They're fantastic! Thanks for the tip. I shall christen them at Lady's Bath Falls - memory tells me that was the clip you mentioned them in - this coming February.
Sorry for my tardy response Mick, I've been away. Your spy novel sounds riveting! It seems like you have a few ideas floating about that need to be put to paper and hopefully you can make good progress with one of them 😀 Thanks for the Lake Metung tip - it sounds vaguely familiar and is another to add to my list of Victorian places to explore!
Glad to hear that you got yourself a pair of Muck boots - they're fantastic and so comfy and I'm sure love them! Great way to Christen them at Lady Baths Falls too, one of my fave waterfalls - a wonderful little beauty 😊 Have fun frollicking about there and do be careful Mick, as the rocks can be a bit slippery! Would love to hear about it after your visit. Have a great weekend and New Year! 🎆🥳
Wonderful talking Valerie. Thnx.
Many thanks for watching and your comment 🙏🙂 Enjoy the holiday season and best wishes for next year! 🎄📸
Merry Christmas to you and your family
Thank you kindly Peter 🙏 and wishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas and New Year 😊🎄📸
Very inspirational 😍😍😍
Many thanks Andrew for your feedback 🙏 and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it and found it inspirational 😊 Have a great holiday season 🙂👍📸
That's a skink. Quite different from geckoes. I have seen them in the southwest of WA, and in Brisbane.
You don't need talent to be a good photographer, you do need the interest and it takes practice.
Talent might be the difference between a good photographer and the likes of Tony Hewitt and Christian Fletcher.
Skill comes with practice. I have had a lot of practice.
Luck definitely helps. If you found those yellow robins in your first two hours, that's luck. If you stay there for a week, it's not luck.
Thanks John for clarifying - I took a guess there, as I don't think I'd seen a skink before then 😃 Appreciate you sharing your thoughts 🙏 As they say, practice makes perfect...or close to it! Have a great festive season 🙂🎄📸
@@ValerieMisaPhotography Geckos I have seen were hiding under stuff. Skinks are often seen in a sunny place sunning themselves. Geckoes have sticky feet, and drop their tails more readily.
