  • In this episode, I reach Chinguetti! This was the final destination of my desert adventures with Ahmed. From here on, I'm continuing on my own again. Chinguetti is a fascinating desert town, on the old trans-saharan trade routes and hosts several libraries with ancient books. What an incredible place!

These Mauritania episodes are some of Noraly’s best yet. She gives us lessons on geology, history, we meet interesting people, and see sweeping views of the desert. Just wonderful.

I've learned that a lot of that history recorded in libraries in rural africa is fake.
There's no way for them to prove it but that's what they're saying.

Noraly, your ability to connect with people is a blessing to them and you. Ahmed seems to be a treasure who found you in Mauritania. One of the best things I find in your channel is the confirmation that people across the world are much the same. Mostly helpful and friendly. That is not the message we receive from most sources. You open our eyes to a world that is so much different than what we are conditioned to believe. Archaeologic, geologic, historic, and cultural treasures are always on the menu. Thank you.

Throughout your journeys you've not only greatly entertained us but also you put us abreast of the realities of the places you visited. Personally I am happy that you followed your instincts and took Ahmad to be your guide, frankly speaking, the desert is definitely an unforgiving land and here who could be any better than a true and knowledgeable gentleman as Ahmad to guide you through. I feel a tinge of sadness that you have to part now with him, but maybe if you could give Ahmad a bit of support and exposure so that he could provide the same guidance services to other travelers as well, not only could this be a life-saver for them but will also help Ahmad who is indeed an encyclopedic bank of knowledge of the land.

@6.20: In the middle of the desert, the approach into Chinguetti (where they maintain, of all things a LIBRARY) was a truly incredible sight. The contrasts between the grey concrete of Western cities, and the fragile fences and old buildings, and the magical hush and intimacy of this town left me stunned.

Ahmed is for sure a very good guide! Why so many people say he is an angel or a hero? Can't understand. When I am in the mountains, I book sometimes a guide. Especially for routes I never made before. The guides are locals and know each rock in their region. I had lot of talks in the past with such guides and all have wonderful skills. Thank-you Noraly for this new adventure! 😊 My heart is full of gratitude for Acmed and the time he took to make sure you came through the desert unscathed. It feels like someone is protecting my own sister. After following your progress for years and seeing you be self sufficient, caring, and such a positive force for good in the world…let’s be honest, you could have done all of Africa by yourself…buuuut…I’m happy for Acmed…and…your new comb, your hair looks great!

Fascinating library. His comparisons to Messenger and Whatsap was funny, but also pretty remarkable to see the ancient and the modern being discussed together as a similar concept. Very insightful.
