    How to make a DIY Marquee number letter. In this video I show how I created the number one marquee letter with lights. It was for a event and I had procrastinated and had 3 days to make it on my spare time after work. There isn't a lot of detail as how to or the video would be 30 minutes long. I can talk a lot. But if any of you are considering creating a marquee letter or number I hope some of the clips or tips I show in this video will help you out.

    • @MakerDecor
      @MakerDecor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi thanks for watching. I built this with MDF and it was very stable. The wood glue and nails keeps everything secure. The main reason I used MDF was it was cheaper than plywood at the time. Plywood prices sky rocketed over a year ago. But now the plywood prices have come down some and is affordable again. The best thing in my opinion is 1/2 sanded plywood. It is lighter than MDF and stronger. Right now it is slightly more expensive but I believe it is worth it.

    • @MakerDecor
      @MakerDecor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi thanks for watching. The tool I used to punch the holes was a drill with a 7/8 paddle bit. When you use the paddle bit you kind of need to move it around a bit to make the hole just a little bigger than the 7/8. If you do that the lights should fit in snug enough just by themselves with no glue. Thanks.

    Why did you paint it red first then white? Or what was the red can

    • @MakerDecor
      @MakerDecor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Hi thanks for watching my video. The reason I painted it red was just for a primer. The material I used was MDF, which looks smooth when painted, but it absorbs a lot of the paint. So just painting it a light color, would take a lot of coats of white paint. If I paint it a darker color red or grey, it coats it with just one coat easy. It was less than half a can of the red. Then two coats of white paint go on smooth and comes out great. If I were to paint it just with light colors, like just the white it would of taken much more paint and multiple coats. I did use the better quality paint cans to make sure to get great coverage. Thank you for your question, hope I made sense on why it worked better to prime with a darker color first.

    What is for the red paint you put on the letter, is kind of a MDF treatment before painting??

    • @MakerDecor
      @MakerDecor  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, no I used the red spray paint as a primer because I didn't have any primer paint at the time. MDF will eat up spray-paint and usually takes a couple of coats. I had that red spray-paint which was also primer/paint. So I decided to waste that. Then just use the final coats with the white paint.

    I have to make the same for someone they ask and willing to pay me labor .any advice for labor charge? Thanks

    • @MakerDecor
      @MakerDecor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi thanks for watching. Labor it a tough question because for everybody its different. To me there is skilled labor and unskilled labor. For example I can pay some one to dig a hole outside. They don't have to have prior experience, tools or knowledge. I can just give them a shovel and have them dig for some extra money. Then there is skilled labor. Meaning you have skills that you learned or learning, tools and the knowledge or ability/need to look up how to do, make or create something. This is not rocket science but you do need some skill, tools and knowledge of what you want to create and trouble shoot issues. Depending on your skill level this can take 4-5 hours to build or 2 days. What I would do is look up online and etsy to see what someone who sells these completed, charges and compare your design and see if it is worth it. Factor in wood, paint, screws, etc. Then what you believe it will take you time wise and see what your profit would be if you charges similar. Some times its worth it sometimes its not and you end up working for like $5 hour. Now if its just for experience than that changes things. I can tell you after I built one the others were a lot easier and took way less time. These marquees are expensive online so don't sell your self short.

      Hi, thanks for watching. Sorry, I do not sell numbers at the moment. These are just videos showing how you can build them yourself. I am working on templates that I will sell on my etsy store that can be traced, cut and built. Thank you.

    What thickness of MDF?

    • @MakerDecor
      @MakerDecor  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, depends I have used 1/2 inch which is the best and 1/4 inch which is easier but doesn't look as good. And I recommend plywood as it is lighter. I had used MDF when plywood prices had skyrocketed and it wasn't really affordable to make these with it. And at the time MDF was less than half $. But now pricing for plywood is more reasonable and is the better option in my opinion. Here is a video where I discuss the sizing a little more in-depth. Hi. What is the dimension of the base?

    • @MakerDecor
      @MakerDecor  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I have done different sizes depending on which style marque I am building. Most often I use something around 8 inches wide and 1/2 inch thick. Length will vary depending on number.

      Hi, thanks so much for watching! I did not use a font I just started drawing and changing angles till the number 1 looked like I thought it should. It took some time, I just used a pencil and ruler, but it wasn't hard at all. Greetings!

      @@amberphillips9027 Hi yes, I just kinda winged it. But it is 3 ft tall x 2 ft wide. I bought the 2ft x 4ft MDF 1/2 inch sheet for the backing and then another 2ft x 4 ft MDF 1/4 inch sheet for the sides from Home Depot. I cut the 1/4 inch MDF 2ft x 4 ft sheet into 7 and 3/4 inch slices for the sides. It came out to 3 slices of 7 and 3/4 inch wide x 4ft long slices. Then I just cut them to the measured lengths for the sides. For the bottom slice I used the thicker 1/2 MDF at about 10 inches wide just to give it more stability instead of the 7 and 3/4 inch thinner 1/4inch MDF. The inside dimensions of the number is 8 inches wide. Your welcome let me know if you have any other questions.
