As a literature grad who similarly replays the small handful of Donna Tartt interviews on TH-cam-especially the one held at the John Adams Institute in 1993 (so good! I have it on repeat constantly) which sent me into rabbit holes of research on Euripides’ tragedies, Bennington College, T.S. Eliot, among other things-it’s no surprise TH-cam recommended your channel. It’s nice to know there’s someone else out there who is “nothing in their soul if not obsessive” -at least when it comes to our lord and literary savior, Donna Tartt.

    4 of my favorites:
    1. Red Rising Trilogy by Pierce Browm
It was the first time I read a book that felt like I was actually in the world I was reading. Great world building, amazing characters, and it had me gripped me to my seat every time I picked it up.
    2. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
This book impressed me so much because it’s so different than it’s modern adaptions/ references, it’s so much more thoughtful and emotional. The contrasts that Frankenstein kept making to himself and Paradise Lost really gave this book so much to analyze and admire.
    3. Honor in the Dust by Gregg Jones
I had to read this for high school a couple years ago and it made enough of an impact that I read it again in college. The author does such a great job depicting battles and views that America’s influential held at the time. Reading this was so emotional for me because I’m part Filipino and so many parts of the book had me seething with rage at the brutality that America was so comfortable inflicting because they believed the countries they were invading were inferior, savage, feral. Overall just acknowledging that this is a part of American history and it’s how America still operates today.
    4. The Race Beat by Gene Roberts and Hank Klibanoff
I also read this is high school and it’s about the Civil Rights movement through the eyes of the press. It was difficult at times to read because of the various editors and journalists that the book talks about but it was one of the first times that I felt that I finally grasped American History. So much of that has happened is still relevant today and I wish that everyone would read this.
Sorry for the lengthy comment, just walking away from these books felt like I understood the world a little bit more :)

Hi there. Really love your channel. I've read 'Brideshead' three times and looove that book! Lord Marchmain is a hoot. Michael Gambon (of Dumbledore fame) gave a great performance of him in the 2008 film version (even though that movie took liberties and isn't nearly as good as the 1980s British TV miniseries). Giovannis Room is a special book, and since you enjoyed Brideshead, I think you'll enjoy it. Not that it's similar in plot, but there was something intangible about it - maybe the atmosphere - that reminded me of Brideshead. The book thief is fantastic - and event though it's set during WWII, it doesn't actually follow any soldiers so I wouldn't necessarily consider it a war novel.
