From competitive shooters, I've learned that playing against lower elo opponent for long periods of time does indeed build bad habits. You get away with more than you should and you unconsciously build habits that are not good for you.

These two guys saved my sanity during the pandemic. I had cabin fever and I rediscovered chess. Their successes, in each of their journeys, motivate and inspire me in my journey just to get to 1700-1800. Maybe in 5 years I can break 2000. Good luck to both of them.

It might be tough...as Hikaru said, this was an easy tournament and not necessarily typical.

to be clear, in order to get GM levy needs
1. to get 3 GM norms (which requires that he performs at a particular level in certain very specific tournaments). he currently has 0 norms.
2. achieve a FIDE rating of 2500, he's currently somewhere around 2350.
im telling you this so you know that levy needs to compete at least 3 tournaments (this one didn't count, he couldn't have won a norm here) before he even has a chance of getting GM. so at least for the next few months its always going to be clickbait. levy is at or near GM level in terms of skill. but he's got quite a ways to go in terms of officially proving it. and im willing to bet when he does earn any norms, as well as when hits 2500, they'll likely be rather vocal about it.

I find this reporting style by Hikaru interesting. The great thing about sports is you don't know how things will turn out until the game is played. Good for Levy for the win and good for Hikaru for his expert analysis and insights.
8:10 Hikaru has started to pay attention to what he's saying ever since Levy dropped his 5th round recap and was throwing shade at Hikaru at every opportunity.
I think that he was a bit stressed... and yeah, probably having heard that piece of info from the "lie detector" video was not fun. Hikaru look at chess from the Top, it's like attending a Master at Harvard... that s also one of the reasons he is a sGM. And probably Levy should start to do this step in order to improve.

Making videos like this one is the most efficient way to coach Levy.
Maybe it's not very probable that Levy would make it to 2500 in the current chess climate. (2300-2400 rated players are a lot stronger than 20 years ago & there has been some rating deflation going on since 2017-2020-ish )
I just think since the dude is doing Chess full time and is clearly the best he had ever been, with this much help & enough persistence he may just make it. (and it would be a story for the ages)

Today's stare is a 8/10. Bit awkward but recovered. Not yet on the level of Grand matriarch Levy.
Man Hikaru really likes levy. I love his advice at the end. Levy did need some confidence.
I hope levy realizes with all his hours of making classes and creating content. He does have have the skills to become a GM. Just has to be confident in his moves. Levy does know a lot of theory and he needs to use that to his advantage and not get into time trouble. If he was confident in his moves and always put his opponent on time trouble I really think he could get his norms.
Imagine having an idol… make friends with him… and hearing your idol say you will never make life goal.

If Hikaru ever retires from competitive chess I really hope he does go on to commentating chess tournaments. He is energetic, very knowledgeable (no duh when you're one of the best players ever) and in my opinion a joy to listen to.

Hikaru's 10th video in a row, in the past week, about Levy with his name in the title. Major back of the restaurant - sit down- handshake vibes after the lie detector video came out.
I think they came up with a resolution where Hikaru doesn't have to go on a permanent vacation

I wouldn't call his opening a surprise weapon as Levy has a lot of videos stating that he thinks c5 is best against the advanced variation.
Even I cannot surprise anyone with that move in 1400-1600 range.
That variation worked out well for Levy. I suspect he enjoyed that game as much or more than any of the others.
Levy uses Magnus as Clickbait. Now Hikaru uses Levy as Click wit. I can't wait to see Magnus have his own YT channel to see him use Hikaru as his Clickbait.
I slowly got to 1400 rating in rapid, I have roughly 2k games. I never studied chess, never memorized nothing apart from two openings, I'm not doing puzzles. Every half a year or so I suddenly have a rating drop of 200 points and I keep losing to people that used to be no problem and it drives me nuts because I have a competitive nature. It's like I'm suddenly 10% dumber than before. I make stupid blunders every game. It's really frustrating and kinda ruins the game for me, as this happened several times before. If anyone can relate or has tips I'd appreciate it.

arjun erigaisi went to many open tournaments where the average rating was 80-100 points below his..and he won each and every one of them..he farmed em good 🤷♂️
There’s a tournament wich held in egypt , over 300 competitors with some IMs , a 10 year old kid won the event called abd al rahman , i wish u do a recap on his games
According to GPT the 2500 rating only has to be achieved momentarily and in no particular order so if it can be farmed it's a bit against the spirit of the label but he'll probably take it :)
The GM norms he will have to perform to but he was very close recently. It might ultimately be easier to find that next level insight such that it's not a struggle but a breeze. Maybe a mix.
The virtuosity and speed by which Levy comments on games and runs lines in his head to me seems like he should at least be able to eke out a GM title. I mean if Kramnik can, anyone can do it.

Hikaru saying that Levy is too old to become a GM isn't really a respectable statement to be fair because Janis Klovans became GM at the age of 62 and levy is only 29.
