As albums I’d probably agree that none are 5 star, but Let It Be, Emotional Rescue, Around The Sun, and Word Of mouth have their moments. I find Snow intriguing.
Growing Up In Public definitely suffers from that awkward musical identity (mid-life) crisis that all those 60's guys like Lou and Neil seemed to get trapped in sooner or later, but at least the lyrics were still hilarious and entertaining. Thankfully, we got The Blue Mask w/the great Robert Quine and Fernando Saunders after that. Mistrial (1986) is for me, his worst from the 80's.
I think it would be easier to name artists who had excellent songs, but then you can't name anything (good) from later decades: - David Bowie: "Heroes" is a genious song from 1977. I can't think of anything from the 90s or later though. - Bob Dylan kinda gave up after the 70s, right? - Alanis Morisette? - Radiohead after the 1990s? - Aerosmieth after the 1990s? - Steven Spielberg after War of the Worlds? - George Lucas after mid 1990s?
Totally agree about Prince. Hit and Run Part 1 is actually the album I just can't stand, but Chaos and Disorder was the first one that left me utterly disappointed. However... when he dug out the title track and played it like this in 2014... whole other story! th-cam.com/video/m-D-KoIpTlI/w-d-xo.html
For Bob Dylan, I found Down in the Groove far worse than either Empire Burlesque or Knocked Out Loaded. These are definitely not masterpieces, but they have a couple of good tracks. As for Lou Reed, while I agree that Growing Up In Public is really bad, I found Mistrial absolutely abysmal, with lazy writing and shitty mid-80s overproduction. Also, sorry but I disagree on The Black Rider - I love the energy on that record, and Waits' melodies are very strong.
Cant wait to hear your picks..dont like Death of a ladies man? Growing up in public? Chaos and Disorder? Id rather listen to any of these over almost any U2 albums or most Springsteen..Its like the same thing over and over. Assembly line crap. The Tom Waits is one i bought but im not that enthused with it and im a big fan..As far as Alice i agree. The first two are crap..Had the albums back in the day..Had Lace and Whiskey also and its not great so i dont know if ill get it again on compact disc. My albums are all gone now..
I find with most of the performers, you named, You even have to force yourself to like what is considered their best albums. I mean come on Lou Reed, and Bruce Springsteen have brought out some of the most droll albums in history.
It's far from his best but I like Alice Cooper's Lace and Whiskey mostly. It's very odd and theatrical in spots. My favourite cut is It's Hot Tonight, for me it's just a fun late 70's rock song. Where Alice Cooper really loses me is the late 80's hair metal period.
There are a lot of Lou Reed solo albums that I have a hard time getting through. So many are uneven at best, and some are just downright awful. I really dislike "The Bells". Good call on "The Black Rider". I like 'November' a bit from that one, but that's about it. I think "Knocked Out Loaded" would be my Dylan pick as well. People swear by the greatness of 'Brownsville Girl', and maybe amongst the rest of the material on the album it is a standout, but I've never fully embraced it as a classic Dylan tune. "Empire Burlesque" has really dated production, but I think it has several good songs on it. The songwriting isn't as sharp as "Infidels", but it is better than anything he did until "Oh Mercy". Could have definitely used more songs in the vein of 'Dark Eyes', but he was trying to sound relevant to the times. My only disagreement is with "Death of a Ladies' Man". I really dig that record. Yeah the production is odd, and Cohen's vocals are buried in the mix, but, again, I think there are some cool songs throughout. The only song I could do without is 'Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On'. I love 'Iodine', and the country shuffle of 'Fingerprints'. It doesn't sound like anything else in Cohen's discography, and it is kind of a bridge album between Leonard's earlier singing style and his later singing style. Since there weren't songs from that album on his Greatest Hits and early Best Of sets, I never really understood how we went from Point A material like 'Bird On A Wire' to Point B material like 'Everybody Knows'. I really like his vocals throughout "Death of a Ladies' Man". He's really loose, and he's starting to have that lived in quality to his voice, but he's not doing the talk singing thing yet. I mean, I get why folks don't like Spector's influence and how his Wall of Sound meshed with Cohen's songs, but I think it is a cool album.
Interesting stuff. I'm a huge Bruce fan and kind of agree with you about Human Touch, though I have to add that (and I know I'm in the tiny minority on this) but I can't stand Tunnel of Love. The usual rant is that it's this great record about what he'd been going through, relationship-wise. Sure, but the music is just incredibly bland...just uninspired, middle of the road stuff. I hated it on the first listen.
I loved it on first listen. I wanted something different from him. "Tunnel of Love," "Brilliant Disguise," and "One Step Up" were all immediate highlights for me. The rest of it took a while.
Totally with you on Cohen's Death of a Ladies' Man. I own every other album by him, but I refuse to let that horrible monstrosity in my house. It's the album folks who don't like Lenny like. They can have it. On the other hand I love Waits' Black Rider. It was the first album by him I heard, not an easy entry point, but it just clicked with me. Very pleased to have the new repress. I've not watched Mazzy's video yet, I'll have to swing over and check out. Cheers - Hedley
2 albums by The Who, that were so bad, their likely out of print today Whos Best ? (it think its called) from 1983 with colorful British flag cover a once popular greatest hits compilation album, what I really hated about the record was how they (MCA) butcher edited and shortened the epic We Don't Get Fooled Again. The chopped version of " Fooled was even popular on Rock radio and friends and peers for about 2 years in the early 1980's, and Who's Last MCA 1983 a live concert album of their last show in Montreal Canada in December 1982. The sound quality sucked, Just a cheapo pair of microphones placed way too far away. The cheering audience sounded like a football game. I heard vintage bootleg albums sound better. A far cry from their iconic. Live At Leeds, The Kids Are Alright soundtrack.
Cool video and reviews This is tough task if you try to avoid bands past their prime LuLu : Reed and Metallica ( does that count as 2 ) anyway Lou stood behind this and Bowie said it was one of his best. Moonbeams and Blues-jeans Captain Beefheart I think Unconditional Guarantee has a few decent tracks, if it were anyone else in Mid 70s it might be passable not for the captain On Every Street : Dire Straits Great band until this happened Up to this point every studio record a classic , so disappointing I am looking fwd to Marks Local Hero thing ! Bob Dylan : Christmas Album I don’t even know the name Pointless Hawks and Doves : Neil Young I know he was going through personal turmoil at this time but i just warm to this I could have just as easily picked his stupid Doo Wop or Electronic albums but Hawks and Doves for me is his worst legit album Sometime in New York City John Lennon Its no a good Album Journey through The Secret Life of Plants : Stevie Wonder After his amazing run from Signed Sealed Delivered to Songs in the Key of Life And then This ? ! Thing Fish : Frank Zappa Not sure why he did this Little Village : Little Village Ry Cooder , John Hiatt , Nick Lowe & Jim Keltner I so wanted to like this album but it just doesn’t add up to the sum of its parts.
Great list. Some I'm not familiar with and will probably just take your word on. Hawks and Doves almost made my list. I'm a huge Neil fan, but I can't stand that record. Especially the second side, or the one with "Union Man" on it. Makes me cringe.
nowhere near lou reed’s worst… nowhere near springsteen’s worst… black rider is less a real album.. just songs from the play… and death of a ladies man is not awful by any stretch. i will agree with you on lace and whiskey but that’s about it.
@@lostmixtapes i don’t think cohen ever made a bad album per se… ladies man for sure is divisive but don’t think it’s a terrible album at all. springsteen has had a few…. devils and dust, working on a dream, wrecking ball to name a few. i actually like human touch and lucky town quite a bit…. they’ve got a vibe.
Of course I want to defend all Bob Dylan albums. I guess it's because I've given them a second and a third chance. I remember that I didn't like Shot of love the first times I heard it, but now I do. Mazzy's pic "Saved" I love even more. Interesting that you and Mazzy didn't choose a Bowie record. I think "Never let me down" or the Tin Machine records are stinkers.
Worst Elton John album "Victim of Love". Until then all his albums were an automatic must-own, not after that one. 2 albums I regret buying, so-called cult classics: "Trout Mask Replica" by Captain Beefheart and "Wee Tam & The Big Huge" by The Incredible String Band. I call them unlistenable amateurish basement noodling. Nothing memorable or redeemable.

I can't imagine having The Black Rider be my introduction. Cool that it turned you on to him though.
"Death of a ladies man" is great, even though Leonard did not get to record his vocals properly.
2 albums by The Who, that were so bad, their likely out of print today Whos Best ? (it think its called) from 1983
with colorful British flag cover a once popular greatest hits compilation album, what I really hated about the record was how they (MCA) butcher edited and shortened the epic We Don't Get Fooled Again.
I happen to like the BLACK RIDER!
You should rank the Sex Pistols albums.
Ha
Love original ALICE band too!
You obviously have no idea about Lou Reed's songwriting.
@@kromedome0101 Enlighten me…
Cool video and reviews
This is tough task if you try to avoid bands past their prime
LuLu : Reed and Metallica ( does that count as 2 ) anyway Lou stood behind this and Bowie said it was one of his best.
Moonbeams and Blues-jeans
Captain Beefheart
I think Unconditional Guarantee has a few decent tracks, if it were anyone else in Mid 70s it might be passable not for the captain
On Every Street : Dire Straits
Great band until this happened
Up to this point every studio record a classic , so disappointing
I am looking fwd to Marks Local Hero thing !
Bob Dylan : Christmas Album
I don’t even know the name
Pointless
Hawks and Doves : Neil Young
I know he was going through personal turmoil at this time but i just warm to this
I could have just as easily picked his stupid Doo Wop or Electronic albums but Hawks and Doves for me is his worst legit album
Sometime in New York City
John Lennon
Its no a good Album
Journey through The Secret Life of Plants : Stevie Wonder
After his amazing run from Signed Sealed Delivered to Songs in the Key of Life
And then This ? !
Thing Fish : Frank Zappa
Not sure why he did this
Little Village : Little Village
Ry Cooder , John Hiatt , Nick Lowe & Jim Keltner
I so wanted to like this album but it just doesn’t add up to the sum of its parts.
Great list. Some I'm not familiar with and will probably just take your word on. Hawks and Doves almost made my list. I'm a huge Neil fan, but I can't stand that record. Especially the second side, or the one with "Union Man" on it. Makes me cringe.
Porcupine tree. The incident. Just don't get it. Have dvd a. Never play it
KOL is a good record by Dylan :)
Helen Reddy never made a bad album !
nowhere near lou reed’s worst… nowhere near springsteen’s worst… black rider is less a real
album.. just songs from the play… and death of a ladies man is not awful by any stretch. i will agree with you on lace and whiskey but that’s about it.
What are your worsts for LC and BS?
@@lostmixtapes i don’t think cohen ever made a bad album per se… ladies man for sure is divisive but don’t think it’s a terrible album at all. springsteen has had a few…. devils and dust, working on a dream, wrecking ball to name a few. i actually like human touch and lucky town quite a bit…. they’ve got a vibe.
The first Bob Dylan album that I bought was Self Portrait. What a crappy album.
That first song alone got me to turn it off on my first listen.
@@lostmixtapes I like "All the Tired Horses."
I love Self Portrait,
Yeah the Tin Machine albums are not very good. I don't own them anymoire @@martinlarsson5254
Couldn't even wit a couple days before ripping off Mazzy?
Did you even watch this video? Lost Mixtapes. suggested that I do this topic over dinner a few days ago. And in my video , I reminded him to do his version. Actually there have been earlier variations of this topic as well. Nobody is ripping anyone off. We all do our own versions.
