Take, great video review, love your pics! Every time I take my M10-R out for a walk, it’s always a pleasure to shoot with, not unlike my Hasselblad (film) in the old days. The 41MP sensor of the M10-R is certainly overkill for what I need, but it allows me the option of cropping in post. The small lenses for the M cameras are also a big factor when deciding to choose between the SL2 system and the M cameras. For me focusing with manual lenses is something I’ve done since my first camera in the 70’s, so it’s both a pleasure and often an advantage. M10-R and lens in hand with extra battery, lens, Visoflex, memory cards in my small sling back and away I go. Keep up the nice work, always look forward to your videos!

Really beautiful images Taco! The night shots look like Cinestill 800T. Would be nice to learn how you get such fantastic results. Have a nice day! Cheers from Sweden!
100% agree with you. AF is something we need to rely on in certain jobs where we can’t afford to miss the shot but in street photography for the joy to manually focus and be proud of the result is so insane. At 5:47 can you tell us the lens you use and the aperture that gives these lovely light stars ?
Always a good time when we go shoot. This time actually resulted in a video too 😂. It’s the Wotancraft bag for me that always steals the show. Beautiful sling. Also that pic of the trees at 11:28 is incredible… looks like a painting.
Good times, thanks for your help on this one. Ya the Wotancraft sling bag is my favourite for walking around… the photo of the trees was SOOC JPEG (I’ve sent you the JPEG as proof). When the light is right the photos are perfectly good SOOC
Great video as always. Yeah! I Love my M10-R. Even the jpeg SOOC are stunning. The only complain is the battery. Pretty poor number of shot per charge. I can see the advantage of the M11. To me, it feels more like the Q2 without EVF/AF but with a much better battery/ charging mechanism and superior resolution. Probably will give it a try later with a 35mm APO to take advantage of the resolving power. Also the digital crop is very handy, just like the that on the Q2. I think paring it with the 28 lux( or cron) for single lens travel would be fun…
The SOOC JPEGs are stunning from the M10-R. The photo of the trees was just that, other than slight exposure and contrast correction. As for battery life, the M11’s 1800mAh is much better than the M10-R’s 1100mAh, although using the OVF only can definitely last me the entire day.
Since my M7 is black chrome, I’d get an M11 in silver chrome, which uses a brass top plate anyway. But the weight savings is real, so if you’re a working pro shooting with the M system, I’d say the weight savings is worth it. Now picking between the M11 and M10-R, I’d go used M10-R if I was paying for it with my own money :-)
Schwarzkopfing is normal? I am in the market for a used M10 though more the P than the R but the M11 is still not abundant where I am so not many used M10’s around. So saving for a Vacheron in the meantime.
Hopefully you’ll see more used M10, M10P and M10-R hitting the market, or consider buying from Camera West and have it shipped. Keep an eye on their online store. Cameras are coming in all the time on trade-ins.
Ironically, I am seeing used M10-R models for less than the M10-P in the used market. I am about to get my first Leica so I’m torn between the larger pixel count or not.
Both cameras are awesome, but if I may mention that the base sensor on the M10-R is the same as the M10 Monochrome. Although high ISO performance is different between the two, I would say the M10-R’s dynamic range is awesome. Another reason to choose besides the higher megapixel count.
very good content as always, in my case i sold my m11 to go back to m10-r (to much bugs with the app and weird exposure sometimes), so a M10-r & cron35apo 😁for me
that's great, congrats. I'm sure some dealers are taking the hit and selling for below suggested retail pricing. From a technical perspective the M11 is a 'better' buy, but there are many reasons to get the M10-R as well, including an awesome sensor with great dynamic range. Congrats again!
It’s definitely a luxury item, but also a functional tool. I guess that’s what I was trying to say, like a sports car. It’s something you don’t need, but if you can afford it, it can help you take unique images
@@bigheadtaco Jay Leno says that when you see a bunch of Porsche owners they're all talking about how many miles on their cars and where they drive them, when you see a bunch of Ferrari or Lambo drivers together they're always talking about how few miles on their cars....To me a camera is a tool to be used, not put into a glass case and gazed at.
@@MyNorthAmetican40 ha ha, that's a great analogy. Ya I know a few Porsche guys, that's true. You can drive those things on the track or in the desert.
Captured with the M11 + 50mm Summicron from inside my car while waiting at the intersection. I basically circled the block for 10-15min to time the shot perfectly. It took about 3 separate nights over the span of a few months, but I got the perfect weather and the right timing on this one. No high rez version to share at this time. Perhaps it’ll be a print or in a zine at some point :-)
Glad you went to the shoe store, it explains your philosophy behind cameras: - "Some people are 'I'm just going to wear a pair of sketchers...they don't need to be legit, they don't need to be on point', and that's fine......for me....the style, the history...those things mean a lot to me" You're obsessed with the *brand*, not the function or quality of the item *as it is*. Functional items have value in their utility and build quality, completely independent from their brand.
you just took the beginning of what he said and not the end lol. He says they first need to be functional, but the history and style is just as important... 10:18 for reference to anyone reading.
@@chrismeetschris I'm talking specifically about the terms he uses at the beginning, his philosophy *still* references brand names as "legit" and therefore somehow they have an inherent quality that others simply don't.
Oh man every time I'm in Berlin I want to go check out some sneaker shops, but I never have time. I always feel robbed of my time while in Berlin, but of course I'm with others so I can't be too greedy :-)
No it’s a completely different sound, The M11 shoots with the shutter initially open as it’s metering off the sensor, and then closes before the exposure, and at the end of the exposure opens back up to meter for the next photo. The M10-P meters off the shutter so it’s closed already at the beginning of the exposure and then after stays closed.
Despite everything the autofocus will come : I dream of it ! The M12 or 13 with rangefinder and disengageable autofocus .... In the name of innovation Leica will be forced to come out with something new to stay in the race : they won't be able to do otherwise!
Same can be said for someone who arrives somewhere in a civic vs a Ferrari. Sometimes it’s not about the destination, but more so how you got there :) in this case, both cameras are awesome.
As you may know, I helped launch the X-Pro3 back in the fall of 2019, and I bought one right away and immediately started traveling with it. I love my X-Pro3 in Dura Black and I'm never selling it. There are definitely many similarities between my X-Pro3 and the Leica M cameras, I mean the design of the X-Pro is basically from the Leica M (Fujifilm has admitted this publicly). However, there's still a difference, The compact lenses available in Leica M is amazing, and having a truly manual focusing lens, not focus by wire, and a true rangefinder focusing system (not a hybrid viewfinder), gives you a different shooting experience.
I own and use a fair bit of kit from different brands, I was interested to see what the hype was about leica, I bought a Q and discovered on using it, that I got it. The images I get and the enjoyment from it was worth it. Will try a M when my journey get me there.
Leica is obviously one of the most sought after brands without question. But as time goes by, they become less and less relevant. The outrageous price is no longer justified like it once was. Other products have caught up with comparable quality at a fraction of the cost.
the Leicas are a mix of 60% legacy fame, 20% marketing, 15% cool optics /lenses, rest is (necessary) electronics. The other cam brands easily beat Leica in terms of features. So in essence you need to buy the story, not the specs. And you need to afford it. nice pics of the Leica park, btw.
an Apple Watch has a 1000 more functions than a Rolex. I know which one I'd prefer. A lack of features is WHY we purchase the Leica. My son purchased a Fuji Xt20 and we returned it because he hated the hundreds of options, functions etc. He was far happier with a Leica Q. Features are a distraction.
@@Unknownresident621 you could have the lack of features in a more reasonably priced alternatives (Nikon Zfc with lots of mechanical dials), so your decision to use Leica probably is also be based in part on legacy fame ... Even as Sony usability is much more computer like, I'll stick to it, because I bought into the system ...
@@henrikf.1247 I understand - of course with everything we purchase there is a view on the brand. This is why people choose a BMW/Mercedes/other over something else. Or a Mont Blanc pen over a Bic. Or a Rolex over a Casio. For the cameras - I've had everything from Nikons to Sony to Ricoh and yes I was initially attracted by the brand of Leica - but soon realised it made me enjoy the PROCESS of photography immensely more than the other cameras. And that's down to the lack of distractions. I have EVERYTHING on the Leica I need for MY type of photography. I'm not doing wildlife/sports where I need 50 frames a second or 30 in camera filters to make the photo look like something else. I love my street photography/capturing life and my perfect 'meditation' is headphones on, walking the streets of a city, shooting street life/people. And for that, there is no better camera than my rangefinder. Because of zone focusing, I can focus and shoot any scene faster than the fastest of autofocus cameras. And that's perfect for me.
If people understood how digital cameras work, they'd stop all this nonesesne about the difference in the look of this camera V that camera. At heart, almost of today's cameras use the same basic sensor technology, but coupled to different processors inside the camera to interpret the digital data. If the camera manufacturer has kept the 'RAW ' data Raw and has not massaged it to oblivion , you can make them all look like each other to a great degree. I have digital cameras in all sesnor resolution and sizes from all the relevant manufacturers, and I can make them all look like each other with ease in post. This is very different from the good old film photography where emulsions were fudamentally different to each other and the look of the photograph very much depended on the emulsion and the ambient lighting conditions, rather than the make of the camera. Good photography, though. Very enjoyable.
Love the camera, hate the price and kind of the culture around it (lately) Leica became famous because some of the fathers of documentary photography shot with this cameras, why? because they were small, portable, discreete and built like a tank... back in those days 35mm film and small rangefinders were not even close to be the "professional standard".... but these revolutionary photographers only cared about getting the images.... Now, it seems like having a Leica around your neck is like wearing a Rolex around your wrist.... i also like Rolex, cool jewelery, impressive piece of machine, for shure it will start a conversation (or get you stabbed) but im never wearing one... specially not for going to the streets to do street photo or field documentary work.
Perhaps over time these legacy brands that started off being 'tools of the trade' over time become coveted pieces of history and luxury. Rolex makes functional tool watches for working professionals throughout history. Now, it can also be a status symbol, probably for most. However, there are professionals who still use Rolex for its function. Same as Leica. I know many working professionals that choose to use Leica for their work for very specific reasons. However, because of Leica's legacy and price tag, some do buy it as a luxury item. That's fair enough. For me, I like Leica because I love the brand, the history, the design, the fact they make both film and digital cameras that use the same mount, the build quality, etc. Personally, for most of my career I shot with Minolta, knowing they had superior glass to Canon and Nikon, but most professionals around me playfully teased me. I didn't care. The same today. I shoot with Leica and Fujifilm, I really don't care what anyone thinks. I do what I want to do.
Yup, very true. Owning any camera will only help you execute an image perfectly, but that doesn’t make you a great or even a good photographer. I know many Leica photographers who are mediocre photographers, but they’re okay with it. Just like not everyone who drives a Porsche is a great driver.
These Leica videos seem to repeat what is painfully obvious. I find these efforts to release videos with new titles but with the same "no auto focus, joy of the process of shooting, analog-like experience etc." rather mediocre. I have been using Leica cameras (digital and analog) almost ten years now. Leica related TH-cam videos seem to talk about the same things over and over again. And these videos about the Leica cameras are the least "Leica" thing in all the TH-cam.
I'm going to be a party pooper Captain Taco but surely I'm not the only one to fret - do you ever worry about being mugged and robbed. It happened here in Melbourne and the guy was a customer of mine who lived in the heart of the city. I told him, don't walk around with it dangling from your neck. Some thug jacked him with a knife. Goodbye M10 and Summicron. Again, not to be a bummer, but as a Fuji street shooter, at least I can afford to replace it...sort of..Leica? Sea of tears..
I guess one has to always be aware of their surroundings with whatever you have. I've heard of people having their sneakers stolen, but the robber really needs to know what they're stealing. I have other buddies who wear $300K Rolex watches while walking around. Again, a robber needs to know what they're stealing. If so, the person is targeted, and there's nothing they can do. Personally I've never overly worried about being robbed while shooting. I am always aware of my surroundings, and when I see someone looking at me or following me, I immediately go into retreat mode. Maybe this is a good topic for a video...
I could not agree more and it will always be a conundrum in my mind as a fellow street shooter, the amount of shots missed because some people fly off paranoia handle, you're using small M-glass which is good. But as a parting Leica note, ever heard of legendary photographers taping over the red Leica logo? Plenty do apparently!
@@guillaumesandmayer7053 I find the taping over the Leica red dot has become more popular in the past decade or so. You have to remember the old Leica M cameras never had red dots, so there was no need to cover over them. I know many who cover over their Fujifilm or even Sony cameras when they travel to places where they feel that any branded logo could attract undue attention. Again, I don’t know how effective that can be if you’re a photojournalist in a developing nation or war zone, but I know some do. The only time I do it is when the manufacturer tells me to do it when I have a pre-production camera pre-embargo :-)
Like Harley Davidson the only value and point of difference of a Leica is it’s price. All of the “ great” photos of the past have been blown out of the water by modern photographers. Ever seen a Leica at the Olympics?
and spoken like someone who's never owned one. A hand built product in Germany will ALWAYS be more expensive than a product that has come off a factory line in China. Leica's are NOT meant for sports/wildlife. But they work a damn sight better than a great big noisy DSLR for the type of photography that they were made for - street photography/reportage etc.

I didn’t hear a single word about the announced shooting experience with Leicas but I learned something about sneakers…
Cool Work! Congratulation!
Really beautiful images Taco! The night shots look like Cinestill 800T. Would be nice to learn how you get such fantastic results. Have a nice day! Cheers from Sweden!
Thanks! Most of my night photos captured with a tripod. That’s my secret, although not really a secret :-)
I am so curious to why you wear 2 watches! That's very interesting!
Just a style I picked up from pilots who would wear two watches for two time zones
I've wanted a Leica for years. Have kids and a mortgage instead.
Long term investments are good….
Some people have decent jobs and able to afford a Leica and provide and have multiple homes.
You can still sell the kids….😂

Oof...same
Great content. Thank you. Cheers👌
100% agree with you. AF is something we need to rely on in certain jobs where we can’t afford to miss the shot but in street photography for the joy to manually focus and be proud of the result is so insane.
At 5:47 can you tell us the lens you use and the aperture that gives these lovely light stars ?
Thanks! It was the 35mm Summilux FLE
all black Stan Smiths, my M240, a Minolta XD-11, and my Hamilton Coop are about all I need- awesome video, Man!
Triple black Stan Smiths!! I have the black Human Made Stan Smiths with the three Velcro straps, and of course have 3 x Minolta XD-11’s 😅😅😅
I'll add an air cooled Porsche to this list
More videos like this pls! 🙌🏽
Will do!!
It was nice to see someone else, who also wears 2 watches… enjoyed the video, too.
Thanks for watching :-)
Beautiful pictures and a great video. Without image stabilisation, how did you get such crisp photos at night?
thanks. I use a tripod :-)
Great video.
Beautiful images 👌🏾
As for battery life, the M11’s 1800mAh is much better than the M10-R’s 1100mAh, although using the OVF only can definitely last me the entire day.
since you're shooting with the 28mm summilux lens, what are your thoughts on the Leica q3?
Fun! Thanks!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I like the range finder style format. Being blind in the right eye a rangefinder-ish camera is easier for me' to use.
Glad to know you appreciate using rangefinders. They are a lot of fun to shoot with, but also practical!
What is the name of the song in the beginning? I use Epidemic a lot and this tune could be useful
Particle Emission, I wish the song was longer, but it's not hard to loop :-)
After holding both do you prefer the weight savings of the black m11 or does the brass top plate and extra weight of the m10r feel better
Leica M11 has a lot of technical issues, camera randomly freezing locking up. Been happening for a year and not fixed with latest firmware.
Sorry to hear. I hope it’s better? It could be the new processor.
Great photos 💯👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
thanks :-)
Thanks for the vid Take. Ive got my eye on an m-11. I’ve got to ask...what’s up w wearing 2 watches at the same time?
I do this. One is a Garmin fitness watch and ugly as sin. The other tends to be a bit more fashionable!
I like the watch. What is it?
G-Shock GMW-B5000TBV2 and Ten Eleven Nine Weltweit
very good content as always, in my case i sold my m11 to go back to m10-r (to much bugs with the app and weird exposure sometimes), so a M10-r & cron35apo 😁for me
Well said take!🙏🙏🙏👊📷😎
😅😅🤓🤓🙏🏼🙏🏼
I just got a brand new M10-R here in Singapore for SGD 4500 less than the price of the M11.
Id say worth it if you'resaving as much.
that's great, congrats. I'm sure some dealers are taking the hit and selling for below suggested retail pricing. From a technical perspective the M11 is a 'better' buy, but there are many reasons to get the M10-R as well, including an awesome sensor with great dynamic range. Congrats again!
@@bigheadtaco thank you!
I can never afford this that's why I will keep watching your videos about them lol
This icon is nice and I'm sure owners will enjoy it but sometimes feel its being marketed as an end in itself. I like that you put it to work.
What's the photo at 0:52? Any way to see it full res?
Captured with the M11 + 50mm Summicron from inside my car while waiting at the intersection. I basically circled the block for 10-15min to time the shot perfectly. It took about 3 separate nights over the span of a few months, but I got the perfect weather and the right timing on this one. No high rez version to share at this time. Perhaps it’ll be a print or in a zine at some point :-)
Any issues with "freezing" or unusual behaviour -- randomly overexposing shots, etc...
Yo what ever happened with your Leica M-A?
I would love to try it, and I am sure I'll like it. But the price is not reasonable.
I can buy one, but it's not reasonable to spend so much money...
Glad you went to the shoe store, it explains your philosophy behind cameras:
- "Some people are 'I'm just going to wear a pair of sketchers...they don't need to be legit, they don't need to be on point', and that's fine......for me....the style, the history...those things mean a lot to me"
You're obsessed with the *brand*, not the function or quality of the item *as it is*.
You're right. A Sony A7c will do just fine.
The Sony A7C is a great camera. One of the rare Sony cameras I reviewed for my channel.
Should bring you to sneaker places in Berlin 😜
Oh man every time I'm in Berlin I want to go check out some sneaker shops, but I never have time. I always feel robbed of my time while in Berlin, but of course I'm with others so I can't be too greedy :-)
just counting the years... my wife said I can get one when I turn 40
Is the shutter sound of M10P and M11 the same?
No it’s a completely different sound, The M11 shoots with the shutter initially open as it’s metering off the sensor, and then closes before the exposure, and at the end of the exposure opens back up to meter for the next photo. The M10-P meters off the shutter so it’s closed already at the beginning of the exposure and then after stays closed.
Rangefinder always best suited for street and portrait photo (28,35,50,90)
for me it's definitely 28mm and 35mm. 90mm is a stretch for me, but photographers like Saul Leiter did a great job with telephoto for street!
True. I love 28 as landmark lens. 35 as street. 50 as portrait
Landscape i prefer 20-24
Despite everything the autofocus will come : I dream of it ! The M12 or 13 with rangefinder and disengageable autofocus .... In the name of innovation Leica will be forced to come out with something new to stay in the race : they won't be able to do otherwise!
Histor-i city?
How would you compare with the poor mans Leica (X-Pro3).
I love my X-Pro3, but I wish they had native manual focus lenses. Similar feel though.
The fuji xpro 3 does the same
Job... when you see a picture
You can t guess which one is
Done with a fuji or a leica....
I would sell all my current gear for a Leica rangefinder.
Leica is obviously one of the most sought after brands without question. But as time goes by, they become less and less relevant. The outrageous price is no longer justified like it once was. Other products have caught up with comparable quality at a fraction of the cost.
Not really. If you want a high quality image, go with your Sony Nikon Canon. If you want to be an artist, only Leica could.
@@guiyuge3631 Lol..... OK. ;)
the Leicas are a mix of 60% legacy fame, 20% marketing, 15% cool optics /lenses, rest is (necessary) electronics.
Love the camera, hate the price and kind of the culture around it (lately)
Leica became famous because some of the fathers of documentary photography shot with this cameras, why? because they were small, portable, discreete and built like a tank... back in those days 35mm film and small rangefinders were not even close to be the "professional standard".... but these revolutionary photographers only cared about getting the images....
A lot of word salad in this video lol😂
I love salad 😂
dude, you are supposed to use your right eye with that camera
I’m left eye dominant so as much as I try to use my right eye, it doesn’t work for me. Too bad, so sad…😢😢😢
Buying a Leica doesn't make you a great photographer. If you've got it you've got it, if you haven't you haven't
Yup, very true. Owning any camera will only help you execute an image perfectly, but that doesn’t make you a great or even a good photographer. I know many Leica photographers who are mediocre photographers, but they’re okay with it. Just like not everyone who drives a Porsche is a great driver.
Maybe one day the AI will take over all these chores for us, adjust every single element for a picture, from light/shadow, colour to composition...
Nobody needs the internet or TH-cam or television or radio or cell phones or terrible people... either.
Leica is left behind Nikon z7 beats Leica M
9k for this camera no thanks
Nobody wants a water-cooled 911.
I don't need a Leica. I do all that manual stuff on my Oly OM-1.
OM-1 is a great camera, and great lenses too! Shoot with what you have and what you love :-)
Good for you. Stay mad for no reason.
Will you give money from all the money you made from your videos when you label something Leica?
Lame when you made money
$10K for a shutter click hmmm.
