  • Hey everybody! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Little Feat. As I recently shared, Little Feat has had a lot of requests, and a few viewers out there have been waiting over two years for this episode. Needless to say, this lesson is long overdue and VERY interesting - so let's dive in!
The material and chord-based sections of music featured in this episode capture the late-great Lowell George at his best with the band, and this lesson features 1970s Little Feat exclusively. We're playing everything using Lowell's Open-A tuning (the last example is in Open-G), and as you'll see, this is a VERY different episode of Chordplay.
The chord-based and rhythm guitar examples hiding in this lesson include fan favorites such as Down The Road, Keepin' Up With The Joneses, Rock And Roll Doctor, Rocket In My Pocket, Cold Cold Cold, Hi Roller, and Willin' - to name a few.
If you're a Little Feat fan, a blues-rock player, a guitarist looking for some insight into approaching/using open guitar tunings, a player wanting to learn an entirely new approach to playing chords using open tunings, and much more - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Well shucks. You just filled in why we all kept fumbling around with these tunes in the 70's, the slide plus the open A was a sound none of us could ever get right. Drop D was about as exotic as we usually got back then. Thank you. As so nicely said in the great Fistful of Yen skit from Amazon Women on the Moon: "You bring honor to our ancestors. You are building a guitar force of extraordinary magnitude." Keep laughing and playing, loved this one.

Probably the greatest underrated band, with some really incredible musicians... Lowell George's slide playing definitely deserves a lesson on its own right...but thank you for this David 🙏

Great stuff man! There's a live recording of Lowell telling the story about getting kicked out of Zappa's band for writing a song about weed, while introducing the song. The other secret weapon LF had was Paul Barrere. Little Feat's 2 🎸 magic was very powerful.

At some point, around ‘76 or ‘77 LG was tuning to G and capo at 2nd fret.
He also was using a 5/8 socket wrench on his middle or third finger.
Both Bonnie Raitt and Mick Taylor have praised Lowell for his technique.
Thanks David for great content! 😊

Awesome! Lowell George was a treasure, one we lost way too early. Your unraveling of Little Feat's magic will help many of us who love them to pass their music on. Thank you.

Thanks for the spotlight on such an incredible band in the 70's. Lowell George is a testament to slide guitar and innovation. Not to mention the rhythm section he had... knockin' out that Louisiana beat..

Interesting, I learned Willin’ in standard tuning. Lots of creative chord opportunities to play with and the vocal harmonies. Great songs stand up to multiple interpretations and this one got my creative juices flowing.

Interesting you feature Keeping up with the Joneses in open A! I was a little surprised that this is in open A, because by Time Loves a Hero, Lowell was becoming uninvolved in Little Feat, and the studio version only has one guitar track on it ( I assume Paul Barrere's) and at this point I think Paul Barrere was sticking to standard mostly unless it was a song he played slide on. Kind of hard to know for sure considering both Paul and Lowell are gone but they are both credited on the song as writers. Would love to see more open tuning videos in additions to the ones you have- always loved the Feat and Lowell's years especially growing up. Fantastic job- not trying to be a nitpicking type!
