- In this restored footage of "James Taylor In Concert" James performs “Highway Song“ on the popular BBC series "In Concert" on November 16, 1970.
"In Concert" was produced by the @BBC in the early '70s and featured performances from legendary acts of the time. In November 1970, James was 22 years old and his second studio album, "Sweet Baby James," had released earlier that same year. “Highway Song“ was first released by James’s older brother, Alex, on his 1971 album "With Friends and Neighbors" and as the lead single from the album.

LYRICS
Highway Song - James Taylor
Father, let us build a boat and sail away
There’s nothing for you here
And brother, let us throw our lot out upon the sea
It’s been done before
I’m thinking ’bout a broken heart
I’m talking ’bout the break of dawn
You love me while I’m here
Then you can miss me when I’m gone
Sweet misunderstanding
Won’t you leave a poor boy alone
I’m the one-eyed seed of a tumbleweed
In the belly of a rolling stone
Chorus -
Back on the highway, yeah, yeah, yeah
Back on the road again
I had a little woman in Memphis
She wanted to be my bride
She said, settle on down, traveling man
You can stay right by my side
I tried so hard to please her
But I couldn’t hold out too long
‘Cause one Saturday night I was laying in bed
And I heard that highway song
Chorus -
Now one of these days that highway song will lose its appeal to me
I’m gonna settle on down like a natural born man
I’m gonna live my life naturally (Free and easy)
Until that day the thunder’s gonna roll
And I notice there’s a sign of rain
So I grab my bags and I pack my clothes
And I’m back on the road again
Chorus -
I’m thinking ’bout a broken heart
I been talking ’bout the break of dawn
You loved me while I’m here
and you can miss me when I’m gone
And I said sweet misunderstanding
Won’t you leave a poor boy alone
‘Cause I’m the one-eyed seed of a tumbleweed
In the belly of a rolling stone
Chorus -
Here I am again
Holiday Inn
Same old four walls again
Gee, but it’s fine to be back home again (whoa, now)
Say, Holiday Inn, I’m on the road again

Life is so hectic, but James Taylor is one of only a handful of recording artists/singers that put me at peace almost immediately. So glad he’s been and always will be a part of my musical life. ‘Love Always’ 1 John 4:8
The soundtrack of my childhood - what a blessing to have these videos - timeless and priceless. My dad was an amazing vocalist and solo guitarist, he used to crank JT up and fill the house when he’d learn these amazing songs…what I’d give to go back in time.
How can such simple elementary chords be turned into such a beautiful haunting song? James Taylor Genius, that’s how!
Isn’t life Grand👍💋❤️
Things I kinda missed became a mother . Rocked all my three babies to all my James. They grown now and love you too, you wonderful soul💋❤️ funny you still alive in my dreams❤️ there is a God🙏🏻😊
No better Cure for the Ails of today than an Injection of Something Good Clean Pure & Beautiful from the Past
I love James for 55 years no matter what he does .
Beautiful song. I like so mucj
Two chords. It took two chords for James to compose this song. Sometimes true talent is making something so simple sound so beautiful.
Two chords...blows my mind
Well, to be clear, this song has a few more chords than the two he alternates between in the verse. Specifically, it has I think 5 more; they come at the end of the verse, after the "One-eyed seed of a tumbleweed" line, and carry through the line, "back on the highway, yeah, yeah, yeah...back on the road...", and on the word 'road' it returns to the two-chord change that obviously inspired him to write the song.
Nothing like D and G Chords. So simple and yet so powerful!
1971. 14 years old. Hearing this for the first time. Cape Cod. Black lights on the wall. Just a highway man.
James. I've f
Seen you 6x..I adore you and your phenomenal music. I'm the silly lady who waits until it quiet, and screams
"I love you, James"! You have moved me since1974. Thank you for you are. 💙💙
I guess time stood still for me too busy raising a family for to listen continually to music I have more time now thank you James 😊
My theme song all my life.
"If you love me while I'm here, then you can miss me when I'm gone"
Playing piano, singing about you being the Traveling Man, and someday you would settle down. Makes me smile since you actually couldn’t stop traveling, but you did find your way to settle down, as much as you can. It’s so great for me that you’re still the Traveling Man! I’m about your age and love knowing that you never quit because life sometimes doesn’t give you a choice. 😉
This concert was 8 days before yours truly entered the world 11/24/1970. I'm a huge james taylor fan got to meet him and had him sign my guitar for me
❤️ James this song was my young reminder of freedom. And moving on to the next breath and further
You sweet wonderful person. Busy in early 70’s you made my hard life so much easier thur this wonderful music ❤️💋 I still dream of you, like i really have met Mr.T
I remember this song from high school. I swear he was my best friend back then.
Something so poignant about this and his other songs about leaving. Understand that he was unhappy for so long, looking for something that was right there all the time. So glad to have had him in all his incarnations!
You keep making me pull out the albums and the next thing I know it's dark!
PLEASE READ! Just an amazing FYI this great American signer did this live now famous concert on 11/16/70 one day later on 11/17/70 The great Elton John did a live show in NYC and is now one of Elton's best albums imo WOW TWO GREAT WORKS OF ART IN 24 hours! How amazing! TOMMYD
I love the fact that the crowd while small is silent during the songs. It must be a British thing. In the US we’d be hooting and hollering taking away some the quality of the performance. That coupled with the amazing sound quality of these BBC recordings is what makes these videos a treasure.
The warm endless summer of Cape Cod. Staying in Truro and spending the nights in P town.Thank you for this beautiful music.
James Taylor and his voice and music are timeless. Awesome!
...special voice... special man...
0 dislikes. Damn straight.
The songs in this genre remind me of when we would travel as little kids in the 70s there was no tape deck there was no XM there was no CD we just had to listen to whatever station came in and this was the song that I remember Afternoon Delight ain't no sunshine I mean all these good old song it just brings back great memories
Detroit momma
Only one J. T. . No one else can quite capture what he brings.... a master lyricist on
top of all his other talents! He'll always be on my" top ten list" ! LOL
Yes indeed!
The piano IS an American folk instrument. I like this simple direct style of playing.
Thanks James. ⚓️
It's been so long.. wow memories I miss yall Grad Mom Billy an Dad Angie Dale Chirstal Jerl gosh I wished I could turn time back.. love hugs kiss kiss
Thanks for the great memories..
A legendary performer. From "Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon". Still have this album. Love his sweater!
I think I read that Joni Mitchell made him that sweater.
I honestly like this better than the eventual album version. Like a lot better
Definitely!
The Best!!! Rio de Janeiro, Brasil
Thank you 🌷
It's unusual for James to play the piano. Nice✨
Hello my friend, I love seeing you perform, first time I've heard this song, you're an amazing talent, so naturally gifted, it's an honour to know you, God Bless you James. 👏❤️🎅🏄🌈🇦🇺
An under-appreciated song from "Mud Slide Slim and The Blue Horizon." Sort of a companion piece to "Country Road."

Mudslide slim is such a overlooked masterpiece
Such beautiful memories of childhood in the uk countryside during the '60's & '70's ...
Funny, in this clip your the mirror image of my oldest brother back then ... such an age of innocence & hope.
Blessings too you & yours James from the Mtns of Tipperary.
. . . and thank you!

Sometimes less really is so much more! JT keepin the jive alive once more, gotta love him ✌️
Much love to James, recently listened to Breakshot and gave me inspiration for my life. I have loved his music for a long time.
To me, it sounds like a variation of "Country Road", which was released 9 months earlier on "Sweet Baby James".
Incredible!
Probably giving away my age. But for me this concert brings back the magic of year 1970.
How good is this!
I really enjoy being the FIRST to hear the replay of James Taylor's songs and I think I am the FIRST to comment too!! I love all your songs!!! Greetings to you and family and HAPPY CHRISTMAS from São Paulo, Brasil!!!
👏👏👏👏👏👏
For a minute I thought I was gonna hear a 1970 jt song I didn't know. But this video is new to me. Love it
Thanks
I love this song!!!!
Must have nerves of steel. So simple, and turned into a classic. Wonder if Carol King taught him those 2 chords. Just a fan. 👏👏😁👍
Hello. Up there.
Man i just get it. One eyed seed of a tumbleweed.........
Another great from JT really good listening..xxx
🖤🥀Amazing song no doubt and I love it🥀🖤✌
Pretty good for two chords!
This song got me through some hard times as it did the first time I heard it on 8 track.
Wow
*IVE GOT TICKETS FOR OCT 25 !!! JACKSON BROWNE & JAMES TAYLOR !!!!*
Should have listen more
This is better than the recorded version on MSS
James at the piano. That's a rarity.
But Joni knit him this sweater 🥲 I am so inspired by this period in time!
Sure hope it was cold there... that's a lot of layers for indoors. We love any JT video from the early days.🤔🧐😜👍
I want to know who knit him this amazing 60's cardigan and vest - and did you notice his shirt has hearts on it? Transported 50 years into the past and all at once I am 14 again and the memories are rushing back. What a blessing to have James with us now and to get James back from then, too!

@@jamestaylor Where can I purchase the sheet music (for piano) for this song (I'm after the simpler version you play here) and others of yours? Thanks!
How hot was that sweater James...dang!
Cutie.
BTW the sweater James is wearing was knitted by Joni.
Mitch Hedberg was the James Taylor of comedy.
👍
Did Carole King teach you those chords by chance?
2 chords my ass lol. He killed that
I repent!! I believe now that it was really you who offered to have a chat a couple of weeks ago. How to rig it is a problem. I repent!
James doesn't reach out to personally chat on social platforms, I'm afraid. His social team replies to comments on all these platforms, but we never pretend to be James.

I see. My first reaction was correct. So they made the red heart picture. Makes more sense. I figured the guy would have a foreign accent!!! Lol!
