Absolutely brilliant video. Very clearly explained and very easy to understand. About to go scour your channel videos now for more tips. Thanks!

This is hands down the best youtube video on MD/Raid.

Great video.. I've been wary of using these technologies because of some old failures, but I think one thing I didn't realize is that you have to re-add the device back in to the md device even if it's the same name. I'm used to hardware raid cards doing that automatically. I'm curious if there's a way to increase the size of a RAID 5 set (add a disk) without rebuilding the whole thing? I know there's a lot of rewriting involved to recalculate the parity, and I dont necessarily need it to run while mounted, but I'm hoping there's some way to bring new capacity into the md device incrementally?

Very well explained and works fine ,,, as playing around. What about real a life situation, please? I have a server with no raid and now I need to make it a part of a raid so I can have the data (and system) on two hdds. I am simulating this (install fresh os without raid) on spare disks but they do not boot after being added to a raid later. Is this at least possible ???

Hi,show how to make raid5 on the network to mount and restore in the same way. Having united in a cluster at an exit 1 debian was restored on the second. Function. Weak pls? To proxmoxю

I'm not sure I understand your question. The purpose of RAID is to create redundant storage (parity) to protect against data loss in the event of a hard drive failure. MD/RAID (Linux software RAID) provides this on a local host. If you want to extend this concept to hosts, so that the cluster will be resilient against the failure of any host, you can look into CEPH storage and Proxmox/HA configuration. I don't have a video on that yet, but maybe someday.

Is it safe to resize the filesystem while mounted and in use?

Yes, you can extend the ext4 filesystem while it is mounted and in-use. I have done it often on production servers without any trouble. However, if you need to shrink the filesystem to reclaim space, you have to do that while the volume is offline (unmounted). The "grow" operation is fairly quick and simple, but to "shrink" can require moving significant amounts of data, and can take some time to complete.

@@DanielMcFeeters Thank You! I just looked at ZFS and it is really interesting. Does all of this, and more, in a single software.
