I found having a slightly blurred background behind your focal object/person will get a similar initial result to what we see in this video, a more crisp background leads to a less defined modulation look so if your losing detail between focal points and bg try adding a slight blur to said bg :)

Love the tutorial, especially the look at around 7:41
I have a question, you mentioned the alpha channel.
When I try to export a file keyed, or with a black or transparent background, the modulation plug-in still picks up and lines the whole file rather than in your example where it just picks up your face.
Do you know how I can get this effect with everything keyed out except what I want to be effected?

Thanks man! So for the eyes, I just masked them out on a white solid layer. I keyframed to mask shapes to make them blink, then I applied Deep Glow to them.

I had the same issue and you will need to go to AEscript or wherever you purchased it and in your account settings you should see "licences and permissions" or something like that and you will copy the serial number and past it into the registration box in after effects :) P.S click 'register' in the effects box for serial number box
