    They threw an actual bottle (or at least a sturdy prop) at Susan Cabot and INJURED her? Wow, the lawsuit that would ensue if that had happened today, let alone the suffocation and facial laceration thereafter. No wonder she left cinema, that sounds like an unpleasant experience.
    Surely they didn't have the special effects to do it back then, but imagine if they had succeeded to make the "monster" like on the cover art. That would probably be one of horror movies creepiest things!

    • @lmcd301
      @lmcd301 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Daniel Renard They probably could have used a suit with the face sticking out.

    • @DanielRenardAnimation
      @DanielRenardAnimation 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      L McD
      I thought of that, but on the cover art, her head is rather huge, which I think is what works to make it look extra intimidating.
      If it was a suit, it would probably look silly if it was like... a Wasp Halloween costume. They'd probably have to make a large puppet and have Susan curled up in a fetal position inside the thorax, then have some very skilled puppeteers move all the legs, body, antennas and so forth. Heck, thinking about that, that could probably have been quite an impressive feat back then. :P

    • @lmcd301
      @lmcd301 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Daniel Renard If the movie had a reasonable budget at all they probably would have been able to make a decent costume. It still would have been tricky to make it look like she was actually half wasp though. Making a normal monster suit look good would be easy (like in Godzilla), but making someone sticking out of half a suit look like an insect would be difficult.

    I'm actually surprised that a movie like this came out at the end of the 50s where a woman was both the main protagonist, as well as the main antagonist. That and her character owns a company, pretty progressive given the time it came out. Sure there may be less progressive elements given the time it came out, but it's still impressive that it came out when it did.

    • @Prilavolus
      @Prilavolus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those plot elements were used in Val Lewton's 1943 picture "The Seventh Victim." "The Wasp Woman" could almost be a sequel, since Janice Starlin begins her career about the time La Sagesse is exposed as a Satanic coven.

    I definitely don't agree that this movie is worse than Plan 9. I personally thought the scene where she's in the darkened lab, in human form, listening intently to the wasps humming with her forehead to the glass was a rare moment of genius in one of Corman's obviously lower budget entries.
    Also, the usage of loud, sleazy-sounding music at critical parts happened in a lot of Amicus and giallo movies, too.

    Actually, I always thought this was one of the better '50s 'B' movies. Susan Cabot's character is quite unusual for the times and her performance is interesting to watch. True, they didn't really do anything with that, but, that's what makes it a 'B' movie: unrealized potential.

    I love this type of film, but truthfully most of them are 90% exposition and 10% excitement and horror. This film is no different in that regard but i do think the other 90% is pretty watchable.

    If this movie gets remade, the remake definitely has to have a lot more effort into the Wasp Woman plot. And for when she changes into a wasp.

    This movie is bad, but it doesn't have a lot of technical problems. Plan 9 has so many technical problems which is why it is so much worse. Corman was a schlockmeister, but he knew how to get a movie made, in just a few weeks even. Ed Wood had no clue what he was doing, he just loved movies.
