Wow, big change from when I saw it in 2019. It had the Art Deco rooms and no original furniture - it was very difficult to visualize what part of the house was the original to the Madison’s. What a great job on the restoration, I will have to go visit again
The woman who does all the talking here either misspeaks or is simply wrong: there were seven owners between the Madisons and the DuPonts, not between the DuPonts and the National Trust. Marion DuPont Scott, the last private owner, left the house and an endowment to the National Trust. On an unrelated note, I can't help wondering if the exhibition on slavery at Montpelier mentions that James Madison's grandfather died after being poisoned by three of his slaves. (It very well might--I don't know).

When I was a kid everything was about the Trinity The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost now it's enslaved, sex and climate change. I wish the whole pop culture obsession would put away their narrow view. These guys ended the the tyrannical rule of the Crown yeah they didn't do it perfectly and the help, the skilled trades, and enslaved helped
Freedom of religion in our 1st amendment is falsely interpreted to mean separation of church and state. That phrase does not appear anywhere in our Constitution or the Bill of Rights. The framers simply meant we (U.S.A.) would not have a Church of The United States like the English monarchy has the Church of England.
I am sick of everyone making the Slave thing a big issue. Yes, we know that there was slavery during their lifetime. Why are we supposed to feel so uncomfortable about it today? Slavery was a part of everyday life. We cannot hold our ancestors to today's standards of what is considered right or wrong. It was a different time and a different life from what we envision today. All peoples of the world, red, yellow, black and white have had Slavery in their history or are decedents of slaves. Sure lets acknowledge that it was a part of daily life and had been since the founding of the country, but lets not make it a big elephant in the room making people feel uncomfortable. Like WE are responsible for the way of life 200 years ago.
She said "slave" 32 times... and no mention of Dolly's ice cream... and if they put an ice stand it would attract more young students, the winery will only attract drunken snobs...

I live in a black dominated community in NJ and I can tell you that some of the worst racists are the blacks that sit on the township committee, they don't deny it because they're proud of their racism.
I want to say something about slavery. once I was accused of causing slavery because I was Caucasian was this individuals reason. Pardon me, I don't think so! My family in no way was responsible for and slavery. My family endured Hitler in Europe. I was quick to inform this person. You tell me what's worse?
Being British , Madison was a disaster he almost lost your country, he gambled your nation with his eyes on Canada thinking Britain were to busy fighting Napoleon. Very misguided.

I took the slavery tour several years ago and that was mentioned about the grandfather being poisoned by the slaves.

I.visited in the fall of 2019, I found the slave stories fascinating. They did live there and contributed a lot.
