- Pres. Joe Biden sits down with Jon-Adrian 'JJ' Velazquez to discuss criminal legal reform as part of NowThis' presidential forum. The son of a police officer, JJ Velazquez grew up believing in the criminal justice system. But when he was 22 years old, he was misidentified, arrested, and charged with the murder of a retired police officer. JJ maintained his innocence and was granted clemency in 2021 after more than 20 years in prison. Now he works to reform the system from the outside.

As part of NowThis' 'Make Your Mark' midterms coverage, we hosted an intimate conversation between President Joe Biden and young change-makers focused on finding solutions to some of the most critical issues facing their generation: gun legislation, abortion access, trans rights, economic instability, the climate crisis, and criminal legal reform.
There are almost 2 million people spread out across the U.S. prison system, according to the Prison Policy Initiative. Of that 2 million, studies estimate that between 4-6% of incarcerated folks are innocent, and 1 in 20 criminal cases result in a wrongful conviction.
During his 2020 campaign, President Biden pledged to “strengthen America’s commitment to justice and reform our criminal justice system.” Since taking office, his admin’s actual results have drawn a “mixed report card” from criminal legal reform advocates. However, Biden did draw praise this month for his decision to pardon all cases of simple cannabis possession at the federal level.
Activist and reform advocate Jon-Adrian ‘JJ’ Velazquez is just one of the million BIPOC Americans who have been affected by failures of the criminal legal system. Velazquez himself spent 23 years in prison due to being wrongfully convicted of a murder he didn’t commit, in large part due to tampered evidence, bribed witnesses, and faulty detective work.
During NowThis’ Presidential Forum, Velazquez had a chance to ask Biden directly about the possibility of creating clear, uniform standards for clemency.

thank God this man was finally released from the nightmare of being behind bars for more then two decades for a crime he did not commit . completely disgusted with how the New York A G's office mishandled his case.

I have never heard of a federal case of petty marijuana possession or use, so the fact that Biden keeps saying that drives me crazy.
On federal property, airports or a native reservation is under federal laws so a violation of cannabis laws even minor possession can be charged in federal courts.
Oh even in a state that cannabis is legal you can be arrested for simple possession or use under federal law.

And this is exactly why I do not believe in the Death Penalty. If even one innocent person is murdered by the state then the system has failed.
Biden is a president for the people and has empathy for his fellow American.He is there to help ALL of the Americans and believes in a second chance for them.

I hope you change these things. Basic education and learning trades is so important. We need tradesmen back in America, taught in schools and prisons. If a prisoner realizes their mistake, shapes up and has progress to show, if he’s not a murderer, then they should be looked at for release. Followed with finding them a job.
We need to teach morals and kindness apparently to people these days. Sadly it’s not taught.

This happens more often then millions of Americans would like to admit they just love their prisons and laws.
American police have got to STOP brutalising innocent civilians for pettiness. Tail light out,wide turn on road,not wearing seatbelts,in other words bad apples are rampant and protected by qualified immunity.
Naw. Make criminals afraid again. The more violent the crime the more brutal the punishment. If you get caught stealing we will just give you the chop until you learn not to steal or there is nothing left to take.

That's so shortsighted. Most people commit crime out of desperation, to survive. When you are in a state if survival you only care about yourself. What needs to be done is give people hope.give people the means to not just survive but to life and thrive. Only when your alive you can stop to care about others.when your in survival mode you don't.
Get people out of poverty and crime will drop. Get mental health people the care they need. And crime wil drop. Don't bankrupt people whit medical bills and crime will drop. Help. Help the soldiers whit ptsd and crime wil drop.
