- This video will show you how to make a great guitar display case. It's a fairly easy project that costs quite a bit less than buying one pre-made.
My units were each 23.5" by 47". You could easily just make them 24"x48" and then you could use a 2'x4' piece of 1/4" plywood without cutting it. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

I’m halfway through the video and I had to pause to comment. Not only is this a really cool idea, can we take a minute to appreciate how well he is literally teaching us everything? I can’t wait to make this. I’ve never done something like it before but this motivates me to want to try.

When I see only the guitars on the wall it gives an impression that it's uneven, because of course guitars have different shapes and sizes. I love how the boxes compensate this problem. Nice job!

5:20 Love the french cleat! Also, as an option, you can use tongue and groove wood or shiplap in order to give the back of your shadow box some texture/ razzle dazzle!

I want to do this for a few autographed guitars but would want to cover the front with plexiglass to keep dust and some uv light out. Need to make sure there is enough clearance between the guitar and plexiglass cover
Michael, I just put my acoustic in one of the cabinets. If you inset the plexiglass into the face frame and use the face frame as the door, I think the depth will be ok. If you want, go an inch deeper with the sides and there should be plenty of room. I really like the way mine turned out and get a lot of compliments on it. Good luck with yours!
Beautiful job. I appreciate the simplicity of design but how great they look. Have you considered cases with a glass/acrylic front? I have some acoustic guitars that require humidity control and was thinking of building some in that fashion
Thank you for the nice comment. I did consider acrylic but it really drove the cost up. A door could easily be added. You could also make a door using the face frame with hinges. To do that I would probably run the inside of the frames through the table saw to cut a slot to slide the acrylic into. Hope that makes sense. This time of year I keep my acoustic in its case with humidification packets.

Thanks! The hooks are 9” from the inside top. I wanted to catch the bottom of the french cleat.
Awesome video. For the guitar hook did you drill into the board that you used to drill into the studs? And if so, is the board a 2x4 or 1x6?
Yes. The hook goes into the 1x6 that’s the bottom part of the French cleat attached to the studs. Good guess on you’re part. Thanks for the kind words.

Any thoughts about adding humidity and sealing the front for an acoustic?
I have thought about that. It would be fairly easy to add a door frame with a plexiglass front. I keep my acoustic in its case with humidity packets. I don’t worry about the the electrics. The cases are in my basement which is more temperature and humidity stable. Thanks for commenting!
Can you please take a moment to explain how you trimmed the box sides to hide the gaps between the French cleats. From the side do the boxes appear flush against the wall or can you see space between the cleat? Thank you.
I did not trim the side to hide the gap from the cleat. It would be pretty easy though. You could either use a 1x3 or a piece of decorative trim.
What type of black velvet did you use? I like that one. The store has 3 different varieties and I’m not sure. How many yards will I need? I have used your exact dimensions. And how did you attach your cove molding to box? Thank your for posting !
I used a black panne stretch velvet. It has more texture to it. If you can get some that’s not stretch, I think it would work better. 3 yds should be more than enough. I cut the cove mounding so close that it actually fits so tight that I didn’t have to do anything to attach it. It I had to, I would probably us. 5/8” ion nail in my 18 ga nail gun. You could always use a few dabs of hot glue too. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask more questions. Good luck and let me know how it goes!
Thanks for reply. Did you cut the poster board edge to edge to fit and then run your LEDS over top or did you leave a small space and then attach the lights?
I left a space so the LED lights could stick to the board.
Ended up using 1in 23 GA pin nails and worked fine. I just went through where the cleats were to be on the safe side. When I pre drilled for the hanger I forgot to score the fabric so went in with the drill the velvet got twisted around but with some extra velvet I was able to make small circle patch. You can’t even tell now. But it came out great I got slot of compliment on this. Came out professional just like yours! Best thing I’ve ever made. Thank you

Great job, but how did you run the lights from unit to unit without the LED strip showing in between each unit near the top? Also, how did you power the lights - are they just plugged into an outlet down below? Thanks
First, I apologize for not explaining that better. The video was long enough and since there are a few ways to install the lights, I left it to viewers to decide how they might want to do it. My method is a bit complicated. First, my light kit came with four 16’ sections. Then I also purchased four led extensions and some connectors. Under the cases I used pocket screws to hang vertical pieces. I spaced them so I would have a 12” space in the middle of the cases and then placed one on each end. In this hangers I used my table saw to cut slots that would allow a 1/8” piece of plywood to slide in. I cut slot in the back of the face trim that allowed me to tightly fit the plywood in them. I essentially created a drawer. The depth of the drawer left me an about 1 1/2” in the back to push the wires into the drawer. To get a better idea, watch my video titled Garage or Shop Organization. I make a smaller version of what I’m trying to explain. I cut the length of the lights to fit around the display and put a hole in the bottom of each display. I added the new connectors to each strand and connected the extensions. That way I don’t have a jumble of lights underneath. The light kit came with a transformer that had four plugs to connect the lights. I ran the extension from each display to the 12” center drawer where I put the transformer. The plug for the transformer hangs down to plug into the receptacle. Depending on where the receptacle is, you could design your drawers separately. Complicated explanation I know. This process would take a whole other video!

Curious why you picked 22 x 47 for the dimensions rather than 24 x 48. I am new to woodworking and went to the store and found 24 x 48 sheets that would not need to be cut. I don’t have a table saw so that would save me a step.
I actually started smaller but it was too tight for my acoustic guitar. There is no reason at all why you can’t make it 24x48. Just adjust the sides, top and bottom to accommodate. It will look great!
Will your sizes fit any type of guitar? What would the size be for a Precision Bass?

How would you add a door with glass or plex-glass?
One way would be to put the face frame on hinges. You could use a router to cut an indentation on the inside of the face frame. Put your pane of glass or plexiglass into the indentation and seal it in with some small trim. If I get time, I may go back and do that to one of my boxes to keep my acoustic guitar in. Nice build! What is the depth of the box?
The sides of the case are 1”x6” boards. So they are 5 1/2” deep. If you add the face frame (3/4”), they are 6 1/4” deep. I hope this helps.
I just want to point out 1 thing you did wrong, if you ise a stud detector it is very important to turn it on , make a beep sound to slowly increase the speed of the beep sound while pointing the stud detector at yourself, just a little tip 😊

The lights are great but
The lights are east to cut to length but the connectors are difficult to use. They look great but it would take another 15 min video to show how I did them. Good luck and have fun!!!

What where the legs you used?
I’m not sure what you mean by legs. If you’re referring to U shaped hooks that I screwed into the back to hang the guitars, those can generally be found in the garage storage section of a big box store.
How do you keep the guitar at the correct humidity???
I don’t worry too much about the humidity on solid body electric. My semi-hollow
Opps! Hit enter too soon. My Semi-hollow Vox probably should be watched more closely for humidity but it’s 50 yrs old and I’ve never had any issues. I keep my acoustic guitar in its case with humidity control. If you wanted, you could put a plexiglass front on the cabinet with humidity packets inside. It wouldn’t be that difficult to do. Hi Ray, what a great result considering the small amount of material and money. I took your concept and made the boxes, including the French cleat. Since I don't have all the tools you have, I had to improvise a bit, but we're getting there :) Can you tell me, how did you construct the faceplates? Did you use duevels for the intersections and then glue them to the boxes?

Sorry, I’ll continue. The corners are 45 degree angles. I used a brad nail gun with small 18 gauge nails. I only used a few as I thought at some point I may take them back off and add glass fronts. I’m a little jet lagged so I may not have answered your question. If that’s the case, please free to ask again. Also, if you find the 45° angles a problem, you can just use square joints. Just make the exposed butt ends be on the top and bottom so no one will see them. Make sense?

I hope you had a good time in Europe, but I'm sure you'll be happy to be "back in the world," as my American friends often jokingly put it. :) They were US Airforce guys stationed at the local air base, where I lived nearby and where we shared the same pub and good memories.
Tonight I painted the boxes and tomorrow I will get wood for the face plates. Of course they will be neatly sawn off at 45 degrees :)
I used spruce wood for the boxes, which of course warped.... With some force I managed to get it into place, but next time I will use plywood, because it annoys me immensely. Many thanks again for your example and explanation.

I would love to see pictures! Interestingly enough most of the spruce we buy here in the states comes from your area of the world. The condition of lumber in general has really deteriorated. Finding straight boards is a challenge. I belong to a big shop that’s an extension of a local university. I often go to a mill and select rough lumber and finish it myself. It’s a lot more work. I’m going to create a separate email for my TH-cam channel and will share it with you so you can send pictures. I should have done that a long time ago.
