    Brent Fikowski and Coach ZT discuss the champions mindset and ways it may end up being toxic to the athletes pursuing it, like Mat Fraser, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and many other top level competitors. But can the average person make use of that mentality?

    Fikowski is a "hyper winner" he has been to the CrossFit Games 7 times in a row which is Incredible just by itself. Add on 3, 1st place regional wins, and 4 top five Games finishes plus many more examples. HOF for sure.

    I remember Ben Bergeron saying, he doesn’t want to coach anyone who has the mindset of “wanting to make the games”. He only coaches people with the mindset of “I want to win the CrossFit games” or “I want to be the most dominant athlete this sport has ever seen”

  • @jordangaulin7118

    I think that any competitors making it to the games have a tremendous desire to win. I don’t think that champion’s mindset are much different. I believe that their results make us feel like their mental side is a differentiator when in reality I believe it’s purely talent and genetics at that point. The guy ending third in th CF Games is not there because he didn’t want first place as badly as the guy in first place. When we observe multiple title winners its easy to look at their mindset and think that this sets them apart but I don’t think thats the case. Yes compared to your average athlete but not to the guy getting a silver medal.

    • @Fikowski
      @Fikowski ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I’d definitely agree. If mindset was truly the most important thing than the toughest mental competitor in any sport, let’s say tennis, Could just transition to ANY other sport and dominate after a few years. Just not true

      I think you're partially right. But i also listen to the language used by some competitors and i feel that the way they talk, they will never take the top spot without a fluke. Its not all of them, but some i just don't feel have that real killer instinct, to really really go in to the darkest hole to snatch a victory where it matters. Its very obvious when fraser talks, that he has that

    Fraser’s strength is his honest self analysis (from his BI training), his willingness to hire experts to help him, and just his plain smarts. He shopped around for trainers, picked their brains and moved on when he wasn’t getting anything more from them, and hired experts (Hinshaw). He also focused on how he could best continue training with the least fatigue possible (his little wrist machine). Others would just do more traditional work and then be exhausted the next day; he figured out a better way.

    I like how you talk about how the mindset fascinates you. I enjoy your videos as I am in the crossfit space, as well, I just haven't talked about it as much in my content. It's been my muse since I was a young kid, studying the greatest athletes and leaders of all time, learning about what makes them tick, all the stuff that fires us up to be better. So, it's cool to see someone else in the crossfit world talk about this.
    What's really interesting to me is that it's often not always the most talented or the most gifted that embody this frame of mind. Sure, every now and then, you get the perfect combination of drive, talent, and an unbreakable mind. Then, you have a once in a generation "performer." But, look at where these people started and it's not always easy street for them. Michael Jordan being cut from his high school team is always a great example I think of, but even in other fields & industries, you have similar stories about how they developed into that person, it wasn't always natural.
    Good video man.

    There are plenty of people that have the high expectations mindset, but they aren't anywhere near actually good enough to win. Brent isnt like that, Vellner is not like that, Ohlsen isn't like that and they are still tip top

  • @jordansanders2517
    @jordansanders2517 ปีที่แล้ว

    Brent is speaking lots of truth here. There are several people that have the discipline and the expectation to be number one but there can only be ONE. Several factors cannot be overcome such as genetics. It can be a slap in the face to these other athletes that they just didn’t have as high expectations or work ethic as Fraser which isn’t true

    From my own 40+ years as a HP athlete and coach it has become incredibly clear that physical potential is far more prevalent than the mental fortitute and drive to win. As the saying goes, "hard works beats talent unless talent works hard." There is about 1% who are talented and work hard enough to win. It's called the Pareto distribution.

  • @greggeis918

    I think Mats distinctive mindset was mischaracterized a bit at least if you take him for his word. After weightlifting he tried to decouple himself from the results. His second 2nd place finish ate at him but it wasn’t because it was second place, his drive was that he knew he had cut corners along the way. He was obsessed with finding every corner and angle to make himself the best he could be. If someone came out and outperformed him and he came in second or he had an injury at the games he had no control of, he tried to decouple those results from his identity. He focused on every angle he had control over, his sleep, accessories, recovery, diet, technique, strategy, not on the outcome or people that he has no control over.

  • @ConnoisseurOfExistence
    @ConnoisseurOfExistence ปีที่แล้ว

    I think different mindsets are appropriate for different sports. Strength sports would require different mindset than endurance sports or dexterity sports. A champion weightlifter will have different optimal mindset, than a champion marathon runner or long distance swimmer, and still different than curling champion.

    • @Fikowski
      @Fikowski ปีที่แล้ว

      True! I also think that even within the same sport you’ll find a pretty big variety of mindsets within the top athletes. Just like you’ll have the top athletes in any sport utilizing slightly different techniques to achieve the same results.

  • @blueodum

    • @ronnieplumper6047
      @ronnieplumper6047 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Whilst I agree that steroids can mess up sleep rather than help, the idea that he could dominate CrossFit to the extent he did and not be using PEDs just isn’t logical. It would basically require no elite CrossFitter to be a drugs cheat. That’s how powerful PEDs are- it’s just not possible that a clean athlete could beat a field of less talented enhanced athletes. Doesn’t take away from Matt though, the guy still beat a field of elite dopers, and it doesn’t make him any less of an authority
