Thanks Gary, same here. All of the local nursery tells me and others customers you cannot grow avocados, bougainvillea, citrus in Paso Robles Ca. zone 8b/9a and I proved them wrong. I have 40+ varieties of avocado trees, Florida and California together that is producing fruits, including 12 different varieties of citrus and bougainvillea throughout my house. I even show them video/photos of my trees and fruits and they didn't believe me. The local nursery worker wants to make a bet with me his entire paycheck. But I was busy at the time and didn't take him up on the offer. Next time I will take him up on the bet on one condition, he have to be on youtube with the bet. 😆 I would love to take his entire paycheck.😉

Be careful Betty, that’s how people end up homeless. Betting people like us that we can’t grow plants. The last thing we need in California is more homeless people.

Ive been growing and fruiting Tropical Fruit for 50 years in Norcal z9b Modesto.
When my garden was featured on TV several times, many nurseries tried to cash in and buy trees popularly grown in Hawaii.
I went to one modesto nursery whos owner ( he had a PHD in botany) was angry at ME!
Turns out he bought very cold tender banana trees and sold them at a very steep profit to unwary customers. And one after one died the first winter.
He lied to his customers, said I kept them inside a heated greenhouse and brought them outside in late spring.
Gary has been to my house a couple of times… WTF could i even put a greenhouse in my tiny garden.
No, I just chose hardy varieties and plant them in my warmer parts of my garden.
My goal as a TH-camr is to educate those interested, that there is a difference between hardy types of plants and some are tender.
Up to the informed garden to his/her research or go the whole trial and error thing like I did almost 50 years ago

If in Southern California, probably right about now and if in Northern California by about April

Hmm, how about in north Portugal. I guess more like north California.
Winters gets to about 0-3C and Summers are dry and get to about 45c in the shade. The trees grow very well no damage neither in winter or in summer as long as the trunk is white washed.
Last year I pick the avocados in early march but they never ripened properly.
Thank you for your advice. This year I’ll start picking around mid April.

@@pichotebacpick one or two see if they ripen. If they don’t wait a few weeks and try again.
