    I love this idea of releasing a demo before full release. That saved me from buying forspoken. After ff16 demo I knew that it would be my next game and after 30hrs I can say I am having a blast. I wish all the publishers do the same.

      @@ungenbunyon5548I came here to say this. Demos used to be STANDARD. And what's even crazier is, even with demos and LESS feedback from the consumer, games were far more complete and less flawed bacc then.
      I've been saying for years, thwy need to bring demos bacc and make it the standard. Demo disk etc and deal with the feedback. Sonic frontiers showed that the company can listen to the Fandom and make changes that can make things better for the consumer.

    As a final fantasy fan I wish there was more “final fantasy” elements, like having elemental damage be more effective on different enemies, just having more enemy variety and stuff like that but I find myself really enjoying the game and it’s hard for me to put down lol. I’m glad final fantasy is going in this direction but I also hope that they don’t forget there roots and they can continue to improve on this system and hopefully bring in more rpg elements

    I'm not finished with it yet, but have been loving it. To me, this feels like a ps2 game that has all of the technology of the modern day. A focus on a very in depth story with great set pieces, a battle system that is easy to get into and has a bit of depth that you feel like you can master. The side quests aren't necessarily huge, but are just added world building bits that are there for the players that want to dig in just a little bit more. I have gripes with it, but there is a certain purity and innocence that this game has. When I'm nitpicky I can be annoyed, but that feeling melts away within a minute as the game keeps moving. I like it more and more as I am going through. I think its because it feels like a game that isn't trying to copy everything else that exploded. It doesn't feel like its trying to be witcher 3, or elden ring, or god of war even. It's just final fantasy 16. And in the modern gaming climate, I think this is important to praise.

    While the side quests are the usual "fetch" quests, I felt they contributed to the story more interms of making the player understand the situation of the Bearers and Dominants. Kinda showed how the world treats it's second rate citizens.

    The kinda messy performance mode aside, I'm completely enamored by what FFXVI has to offer. I'm about halfway through the game (been playing it everyday religiously since release), and so far, I haven't encountered a single dull moment, which is something really rare in most modern "AAA" action-adventure games. The story, the graphics, the characters, the world-building, the combat, the skills, the set-pieces, the Eikon battles, everything screams quality. Yes, it might not be everyone's cup of tea, especially those who are more inclined towards the old-school FF combat system (turn-based), but for me, as someone who worships DMC5 and have more than 1000 hours in DMC5SE, this feels like the perfect "FF" experience.

I really love FF16 so far. The story so far is amazing and keeps you guessing, the music is unbelievable, and the action battles are mind-blowing. While the sidequests may feel a bit underwhelming, I do appreciate that they unlock certain things and give you a better sense of what hardships bearers have to endure. Thank you! People expect the exploration to be like Open-World RPGs, but the game is fundamentally different from that. I think the exploration is all up to you, for you to take the world in as much as you possibly can, at your pace. I really appreciate that, and I don’t care much for loot, the linear style offers so many cool things that feel like an evolution of what you already had, I don’t care to sacrifice that with casual RPG stuff. I think this game perfectly achieves what it sets out to do, and I think that people will only be disappointed by their own expectations. Still can’t get over how good it is.

      @@terrantony2635Thank you! I think the narrative element is brilliant, and I think the writers were super clever in largely setting the emotional core in either Cid, or the plight of the bearers. Both feel surreal and hit every time, and feel like they hit on such a layered and phenomenally simple concept at the same time. One quest that came out of nowhere, that I won’t spoil, had me both angry and sombre from how deep it hit out of nowhere. It was super short, but it set things up, created a twist, and had me heaving in less than five minutes… this game is a masterpiece and my GOTY. I’ll leave a few details with spoiler marks a little lower on this comment.
      **Spoiler**
      The quest was near Oriflamme, this girl was looking for a creature named Chloe, who was said to be white in some way. I thought it would be a Chocobo, while Clive thought it would be a dog, both of which were viable based on how the villagers and little girl spoke about her. It turned out to be a bearer that had fully petrified… the girl started getting angry at the bearer, but Clive (in a badass moment), scolded her and reminded her that Chloe was a human- an individual… a realisation that made the girl weep in a super realistic, resigned way. It made me realise how deep this game was, the mindset of the children and how they are made to think of Bearers, and the hope there is for the humanity of them all to shine through.

    Finally finished this the first time after taking my time doing all the side quests and collecting all the trophies. I agree with everything you said in you review, especially the negatives. But I think the slow moments in this game is more effective then most gives it credit for.
    One of the reason why the highs are so high in this game is exactly because the slow moments are mundane, and it creates a big contrast with the high octane action of the boss battles. It also gives you a low stakes environment to test out and get use to the new skills you've gotten, before throwing you back into action again with the expectation that you are comfortable with the new skills.
    I actually loves the slow and mundane sidequests, as I feel so drained after the crazy high points and having the chance to wind down and just explore the world at my own pace, not to mention they get pretty important in character building near the end. Damn this is such a great flawed game.

  • @batfan932
    @batfan932 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    My two cents to the wind: I like the side quests because they’re short and sweet. But really the side quests are lore builders. They help you understand what’s going on in the world, little nuggets of info that help flesh out the world a bit more. I’d argue this FF is super main story focused and side quests only help you get a little better depth. They aren’t supposed to lead you down a rabbit hole of another quest line. They’re there to bolster your quest and give weight to it.

    • @olegtz
      @olegtz ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I mean, lore builders are great and all but why can't they be lore builders, interesting and fun? Just look at The Witcher's side quests. After experiencing them, I just can't go back to these mundane fetch quests anymore. It's just flat-out lazy. And instead of excusing them, we should demand better.

    • @writer_man5318
      @writer_man5318 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@olegtz It's a cost and value thing. The Witcher basically thrives off of side quests with the main story basically just existing to give the game an ending. This means most player time will be put in doing side quests in The Witcher so they have to add most of the value there.
      Final Fantasy XVI's main value is in the main story. It's what players will be doing most of the time and thus most of the value is put in that. In turn, most of the side quests are then regulated to propping up the main story by adding lore and extra area context value. This also means that majority of the budget is put into the main story which means that the devs have two choices. Either they cut down on the number of side quests to make bigger ones or make a bunch of smaller side quests. They chose the latter as it lets them add extra lore and context at every story moment without distracting too much from the main plot.

    • @olegtz
      @olegtz ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@writer_man5318 I get it but to tell you the truth this sounds like an excuse or even a speculation. Who says there needs to be a trade-off? Why can't the main story and the side quests be good? Also, the side quests in FF16 are so bad that I even prefer them removed.
      One other point I want to make is that like you said - "This means most player time will be put in doing side quests". When the Witcher tell it's story, you get to play the majority of it. When FF16 tells its story you get to put your controller down and watch the vast majority of it, and that sucks.

    • @writer_man5318
      @writer_man5318 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@olegtz There needs to be a tradeoff because budget. Games don't have an unlimited budget - they get a certain amount of money that can be put into it. That's why you never get games that have everything. Central story games tend to have less exploration and weak side quests. Side quests tend to have a weak main campaign and not much in exploration beyond possibly a mount to get you around. Exploration games like Tears of the Kingdom tends to have a lot of puzzles and ways to move around but a simple main campaign and side quests.
      FFXVI uses theirs to world build to see things from the perspective of each nation, city, and people. The Northreach side quests show how uncaring Sanbreque is to their Barers and arrogant the soldiers are while the Moore side quests show that it is being taught to children to view Bearers as less than human.
      And on the last point? That's what Final Fantasy games are - cutscene heavy games designed to be partially watched.

About the only two letdowns are the linear sidequests and the lack of optional areas; but in terms of gameplay, it's a fucking blast. To make a gameplay comparison, if FFXV played a lot like Kingdom Hearts, FFXVI plays a lot more like NieR: Automata and Devil May Cry - which makes sense because PlatinumGames and DMC's gameplay director both helped develop this game. And the scripted battles with the Eikons, oh LORD ALMIGHTY, they are some of the most hype-inducing things I've ever seen in a videogame. The cast is incredibly well-crafted, and the world and the lore are incredible too, you can feel that the development team binge-watched Game of Thrones during the creation of this game. @@skyhijinx Shinies are respawning items - what you should be searching for are treasure coffers that are usually around enemies that have a stagger bar on the maps, usually about three in towns, and you have to look around for them in "stages" that can't be revisited without the Arete Stones. These will have gil and crafting items true but a lot of times they can have rarer crafting items - like Meteorite - or they can have accessories, weapons, belts, gauntlets, and Orchestrian Rolls. Similar to how treasure has always been in Final Fantasy games - how often do you get a Potion in Final Fantasy VI when you open a treasure chest for instance?

For one the questing is actually pretty simple and boring which sucks, I’ve just reached a spot where that is super noticeable. I’d really like to have a mini map, but I guess it doesn’t matter much since my incentive to look for loot is pretty much gone. My biggest gripe with this game is it was made to be super easy where you are not urge to explore especially when looking for side quests. The feeling of surprise is not there anymore when discovering a side quest as when a side quest is available, it highlights it on the map even though how far are you from it. Would have been great if it only highlights or gives you a hint when you are nearby. That's one of the great things about previous FF's before where you are always curious to go to different places to figure out if there's a side quest or secret item. Everything here spoon feeds even the monster hunting part, it tells you where to find the monster instead of giving you hints on where you can possibly find them.

Far from crying over a turn-base vs action, it goes waaaay deeper and you pointed out a perfect example out of many. Yes, it's a business and expanding markets is important, but this could have been executed way better. Best!

There are cutscenes that show what is happening in the world at the same time that Clive is doing his quests and I found those far more interesting than the side quests. It would've been cool if instead of the boring side quests I could play as the other Eikons during those cutscenes. Imagine playing as Dion in the throne room or on the battlefield or stealthing as Gav then switching back to Clive. I would've enjoyed that more than the majority of the side quests. Keep the fishing from FF15 too, also the cooking etc maybe with the hunting from RDR2. To cope without a world map like the old games, make several maps which represent each continent on the world map which you can travel between. A lot of world building is present in every side quest I’ve done, and I feel like I’m able to understand the stakes and state of the world much better by seeing characters plights and offering a hand. They’re not strictly necessary either, so those that find them boring can easily skip without missing out on the central core story or items/levels needed to progress.

      He's not referring to the lore it provides but rather them all being boring ass fetch quests. Here's a novel idea, making the side missions FUN to PLAY while providing that interesting side lore at the same time

    I get that lots of purist FF fans will find disappointment here, but as a non-diehard fan who does love many things about FF, I’m enjoying this game quite a bit.
    It’s refreshing to see a focus on a single playable character in an intriguing story with energetic combat. You don’t get too lost in the weeds of tinkering around with unfulfilling RPG mechanics or wandering around a too-large open world.
    This series is all about change and evolution, and that’s totally the case with FF16, too.

      Couldnt agree more, just was hoping for the loot and exploration to be more rewarding, despite that, I like it

    The Chocobo’s legs seem to move rapidly but they don’t cover much distance. They give the impression of trotting in place.

    I'm turned off by the idea that there's no party system nor rpg systems we are used to. I'm sure it's still a good game, but if I feel like playing a final fantasy, then I feel like an RPG with a party system type of game. I do love devil may cry as well but that's opposite of how I feel a final fantasy should be ran. Just my 2 cents

    I’m a first time final fantasy player and just bought 15. I’m loving it so far but I’m excited to play this after. I love medieval stuff and this looks sick.

    I'd like to give a huge shout-out and shine a light for my good friend Vincent Fallow, who voices protagonist Clive in the German version of the game. An incredible achievement for a fantastic voice actor to whom I cannot give enough praise 🙌

    My first FF game was FF7 and I played all of them until FFX-2 .. including Tactics and Advance.. and even if I loved FF9, FFX didn't convince me enough to continue playing FF games.. espcially when they went online.. but this is the first game that convince me to come back in the franchise, after playing the demo of course! Excellent video, by the way!

    I had a lot of hope that with the 14 crew at the helm, this one would have huge areas to explore and nooks and crannies to find all kinds of identity secrets. As much as 15 was a bummer, the exploration was top notch (albeit in too confined an area of just a small corner of the entire world). When I found out there was a world map and you select your destination, and then I found out they misled people regarding there being a party of characters, this is a hard pass.
    I’ve been playing FF since the OG on the NES (even had the Nintendo Power strategy guide). I enjoyed 13 and 13-2, along with 9 and 6 and 4 and etc. I’m one of those who doesn’t think 7 is the best and really enjoyed the remake. But losing the party-based and job-based framework is a bold move. People will have fun with this for a few weeks, but the cinematic movies folks paste together online will end up being more popular.

    About a 1/3 of the way through the game and I am loving it! Only thing I would change about it is having some mini games (unless there are some later on?) to provide a break from the (awesome) combat and story. Something like chocobo racing or axe throwing, maybe even a FFXVI version of Gwent 😅 Hopefully Square-Enix will patch side content in which is a far cry from the previous game needing story DLC to make sense.

    My Favourite thing this summer is FFXVI, i'm had a blast at the Highs and felt bored at the Lows, what is going on in this game 🤔
    BUT i feel the need to say this : i understand the importance of the"Lows", if you look at it in context of the game as a whole, after the shift in Clive motive from revenge to atonement you need to show it "talk the talk...walk the walk", and with Clive taking Cid name after the 5 years time skip, it's more important to show Clive in role of the new Cid even if it boring...
    as for the ending i'm crying non stop did he make it or not, poor Jill 😭😭😭
    what an emotional rollercoaster this game 🎢 , once in a lifetime game there will not be other games like this one ☠☠☠

    It's definitely a fun game to play with great story and voice acting, the combat is extremely fun. I was very skeptical about the game when I first heard about the direction it was going, but when I played the demo, I enjoyed it. I was hoping this game would have a combination of what they did with FF7 Remake and FF12 with it's gambit system and job system. And no actual party members that you can switch in and out and that you can cater to your tastes is also extremely lacking in this game. Regardless, I ended up buying it and have been playing it since yesterday. I still don't consider this to be a 'mainline' FF game (It feels more akin to FF Stranger of Paradise with better story/voice acting), but it's a great game nonetheless. Plus, it'll hold me over until Lies of P comes out 😅
