I would love to hear how this unit is going so far! I noticed that you have a new fairytale every day. I am curious to know if you are storytelling by memory or reading out of the book together? I am always so impressed with your videos!
Thank you Paige :) Good idea to do an update on this unit. It's been going well so far, but we haven't done anymore handwork projects since we got back from our trip. Most of them were done before, so I'd like to get to those now. I read aloud all the stories, but I still long to pre-read them and tell them from my heart.
Does the Live Education curriculum include ideas for handwork projects? Or are they ideas you come up with on your own? I’m thinking particularly of the felted model of the earth.
There are handwork examples in KG especially and suggestions in first grade, but no, the curriculum doesn't have a specific handwork curriculum. The felted model of the earth was my idea, but it was wholly inspired by the wet felted pumpkin from earlier in the season.
Oh wow, how beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing!!! I was wondering what a morning or warm up activity would be for a unit like this? I love all of the different elements you've gathered, it looks wonderful. I can't wait to see all of the activities you do. Do you plan on doing main lesson books during this block? I'm not sure if your daughter does main lesson books this young for something like this or if your older kids are doing this unit with her or maybe doing another block along side this one. I'm sure all of it will be a lot of cozy winter fun :)
Hi Azia! I think block like this lighting a candle and singing a song is a great way to open up the day. You can follow it with some storytelling and or a picture book. Before lunch you can do watercoloring or drawing and then head to the kitchen. Following lunch you can do your handwork. In our homeschool it doesn't happen quite that idyllic. We start with lighting a candle but not ceremonially and turn on our audio cd songs because I still haven't learned the songs I want to sing. My daughter immediately begins playing with whatever toys and pretend play she started from the previous day. This week it's Duplo Lego blocks. She and my 11-year-old spend hours constructing houses for their characters. They'll play for some time. Eventually, my 11-year-old does some daily math work and his main lesson while my daughter continues to play or watercolors or draws. We read the picture books together. Hot chocolate and a stack of books by the fireplace is an evening activities. Handwork and gardening are an afternoon activity, but not always because as I write this my kids are finishing up eating (it's nearly 9am, we had a late start today) and they've asked to work in the garden first thing. So I'm headed out there after I finish my coffee ;) No main lesson book for my daughter, but we do have a lot of drawings and watercolors and she does have a main lesson book for her form drawings.
Pepper and Pine thank you so much for your response! It's so nice to hear what you recommend for something like this unit and also what an actual day of yours looks like. I appreciate that you took the time to share :) I find this very helpful and inspirational!!
I aim to do them alongside each other. So currently I have a mineralogy and winter block running simultaneously. It's hard to do it in my experience. We just have so many things that encroach on our day.
So far the wool blend seems okay. I can't say for sure because I don't know if I want to use it for our finger puppets and that will really show the difference in wear and tear. Maybe for that reason, I should. We'll see. I love the felt die cuts. We've started the snowflake project, and I love that I don't have to cut those intricate designs. Do you want to try the wool blend? I can send you some after I record the felt comparison video. Can you message me on Instagram?
It comes as a set, and as far as I can tell, I haven't seen them separate. I think the DVD is far more valuable. It's awesome! My only complaint is the terrible camera work while the teacher is drawing. I'll have a complete review of it soon...I hope ;)
Oh I bought it from A Child's Dream...I just double checked because I was so sure it was sold together. I'd just get the DVD despite the shaky camera work which was pretty bad and I had to look away because it made me dizzy, but the content is superb.
Yayyy is excited this will be amazing resource and guide. Can’t wait to look through it
I'd love to hear your thoughts once you do :)
Your head it so focused and clear. I'm all over the place.
Awe Rachel, I'm glad it appears that way ;)

That's what I thought. Thank you for the reply!

I love this! When do you do the winter curriculum plans? Do you do it alongside another lesson block? Do you have a special day set aside to do this?
I aim to do them alongside each other. So currently I have a mineralogy and winter block running simultaneously. It's hard to do it in my experience. We just have so many things that encroach on our day.
do you think the blend felt that you mentioned is sufficient? its pretty low wool content :(

Oh Hana, you are SO sweet! i'm going to just buy some. i'm completely won over by the die cut felt :) THANK you, though!!
the coloring with block crayons- do you really need both book and dvds?

thanks Hana! its sold seperately at a child's dream.
