Several years ago while at the DMV in Ilinois I met a SVM refugee who survived a North VN "round up" shortly after America withdrew - He was placed in a hole along with 30-40 others and was ordered to stay put. "I don't know why, but I decided to climb out and run....and I did....I ran about 50 meters and I turned and looked, several NVM soldiers threw hand grenades into the hole" He made it out of VN on a boat loaded with refugees.

Jack Webb was one of the hippest, coolest guys in Hollywood. Dragnet, Adam 12, Emergency. It doesn't get any better.

In Afghanistan, an ambush initiated by the Taliban was 100-400 yards, in Vietnam it was initiated at 10-15 yards. The Afghanistan ambush was simply contact and still able to manuever and get cover. Vietnam, no chance of either, just pour out the firepower and try to get distance.

Looking back with hindsight you didn't have to approve of the war, but the rage should've stayed focused where it belonged on the Politicians making the polices. The soldiers went through enough while they were over there, they didn't need a bunch of hippies and politicians who had money, influence, deferments or simply chose to run getting in their faces and calling them baby killers, failures, cowards, unless they backed the Hawks or the Doves, especially when they were never there.

Same thing now where much of our population is outraged at various forms of “The Other,” while they keep electing politicians who enact more-and-more severe and debilitating policies that harm this population, keeping them distracted by outrage and grievances against “The Other.”

God bless our Marines . Our Marines in Vietnam and those Marines before that have truly made our country proud . The most incredible fighting force our country produces , they have always fought so honorably , courageously and have adapted to whatever environment they've been placed in. There is something about seeing Marines running toward a firefight that sends an incredible rush through my heart then as horrible as it is seconds later seeing or hearing of dead Marines inflicts a pain into my heart . My grandfather was a Marine and was in Korea in 1953 . Never had the honor of meeting him or know his story of being in the Marines but I'll always feel that bit a pride when letting others know my grandfather was part of the incredible brotherhood that is the United States Marines.

I agree with you whole heartedly. We always have some boogeyman that whe have to be kept safe from. Think about this. Everything we have in the way of food, clothing, gasoline, etc; is delivered to us by truck. If those deliveries were to stop, say for 10 days, there would be panic in the streets. Like it, or not, our lives depend on foreign oil. I hate it just as much as you, but it is just a fact of life even though we have been put in this situation by greed.

I didn’t catch the date on this production, but the Marines carrying M14s (and the Army troops seen in a few shots) put the footage in the earlier-part of our Involvement, many years before the most violent protests against the war that Jack Webb points-out at the beginning.
That war was such a tragedy, as we abandoned Ho Chi Minh after WWII simply because he gave ear to some of the Socialist Ideas (It was others, such as General Giap, or ESPECIALLY Lê Duân, who were the real strident, “True Believers©” in Communism, and firebrands in supporting Consequentialist Policies of “Anything is justified in the name of Global Communism” - our opposition to Ho Chi Minh gave these men the power they would not have had otherwise), and as Webb’s oblivious promotion of Christianity is related, our support of the Christian Diem regime, who was a BRUTAL suppressor of Buddhism that was the religious faith of 99% of the Rural population.
    We fucked-up.
And the Hippies who demonized the soldiers fucked-up as well, as it wasn’t the Soldiers, NOR EVEN the Generals who were responsible for that screw-up.
And people like Jack Webb, following The Greatest Generation of WWII, still had a faith in a government that the Far-Right’s growing influence in that government were taking advantage of, and growing like a cancer.
The inability to “think differently” at the time led to catastrophes of all sorts.
Had we worked with Minh, and demanding REAL accountability and Democracy from Ngō đình Diêm, we would have seen a VERY DIFFERENT OUTCOME, where Vietnam would have been reunited quickly, and the Communist marginalized and revealed to be no better than Diêm’s regime, just acting under a different ideology of oppression.

The easiest way for the Army to cover up news of GI unrest was simply not to report it at 5 o' clock follies. The Army's massive PR machine daily cranked out press releases about how GIs supported the war, how high their morale and how US was gloriously winning the hearts and minds of the Vietnamese people. So the press simply never heard off fraggings, of officers shot in the back by their own men or near-revolts of whole units. Most of the newsmen spent their time with officers' mess.
