Michael Donvito, Javan Roberts, and Craig Burhart have a long conversation within the Grays Custom Shop about various topics regarding sharpening knives, and specific ways to maintain the edge of the MDv Fixed Blade and Folder. This video is made up of smaller clips taken from an 80 minute video that was created for the upcoming MDV Virtual Training Course (VTC). You will be able to see the full video on the purchasable VTC or on the Eliteyou.com platform. The VTC will be released later this month (January) and the video will be available on the Elite You platform within the Knife Section by Friday of next week, Jan 13th.
Of course! It’s been something we wanted to film for a while. But getting the schedules of Michael, Craig, and Javan to match up wasn’t easy. 😂 More videos coming on MDV maintenance!
Thank you. We understand the thought that you’d need a professional to do it. Properly sharpening a knife is a skill and, like any skill worth having, it takes a lot of time, patience, and dedication to honing those skills. The MDV probably isn’t the best knife to start with either. As Javan suggests, the best way is to start with old kitchen knives to get the hang of it. Lots of requests for this video so we thought we would attempt to deliver on what everyone wanted.
Great to hear! Thank you for watching the video. We have a second part coming next week where Javan gives some pointers on sharpening knives and other questions posed by Michael and Craig.
Thank you very much. I am a novice with no prior experience with anything but straight blades. I admit a lot of what the professional said went over my head. I actually got a lot out of your summary at the end. Maybe Im losing it but it never occurred to me to sharpen in 2 sections, great info and great edc knife.
You should put links to the knives with your Amazon affiliate link. The cost is the same for the end user, but you get a small kick from Amazon. Pennies add up over time!
Definitely behind on the Amazon affiliate program. The knives are only sold on SkallywagTactical.com. Chose to release the video before setting up the affiliate links for the honing rods and sharpening stones. Getting the info out on our channel was more important to us than waiting however long to figure out that process. 🤷♂️
@Skallywagtactical asking I guess? Had just seen a few 'storytime with Mike' skits &...that raw, untapped potential backed by (i wanna say) severe confidence..was not cast for the 'engineering & maintenance) epp..got curious. Knives as tools..or practically anything (apart from dismemberment!) or combat tech..any other bevel edge configurations in mind or recurve/drop p naturally perfect? Ps. Restock coming soon??
Are asking from the standpoint of me talking to Javan? If so, that may have come across that way because I was trying to ask questions as though I didn’t know anything. To pull more information out of Javan who is the expert. I was doing my best to start the conversation at a low knowledge point and keep it where most of the audience would be comfortable. Maybe I took that too far and it comes across as out of character lol. That wasn’t my intent. We have a lot of people who ask about sharpening the MDv and most of the questions I asked have been sent to us in one form or another. I wanted to really lean on Javan and have him display his expertise without me assuming anything. I am curious if that was what you mean? I always appreciate input. I’d like to highlight experts and make sure they can go in-depth on their craft. I might need to adjust my approach.
Restock is coming soon. Just had a batch in but they sold out pretty quickly. On other variants, I’ve given some suggestions/feedback to Skallywag on the next version. Very excited when we can push those out. I’ll let Skallywag speak on that timeline since it’s probably not anytime soon.
@@tomkinross7213 There are a few hundred of them on the blem side of the website.. go to blades, then select blem blades then use the pull down menu to find the MDV +1

Thank you for watching. Part 2 comes out next week. We ask Javan questions on sharpening knives and he gives his thoughts on everything.
great video. But I feel I would need some one to do it for me . That does sharpening as a living. Javan is very informative .

I have a mdv and is very very very impressive how sharp it is. The knife itself is perfect. I become a big fan of Skallywag!

Who makes the rounded stones? I’ve only seen flat ones for sale

Will say I'm a bit surprised that the knife concept developer (?) to be seemingly less comfortable with upkeep advice..
Tom, what are you talking about or asking?
