Happy Monday everyone. Today I am interviewing Kimberly Jolly, the amazing owner of the Fat Quarter Shop. If you have ever watched her videos, you'll know that she works hard to show you fabric designers and their new lines and projects as well as her own patterns and special projects. So grab your sewing, a cup of tea, and sit back and enjoy.
Kimberly Jolly is special in the quilting world. My first experience with an online order was purchasing a quilt pattern from Fat Quarter Shop. Shortly after purchasing, I received a call from her letting me know she had refunded the $5.95 shipping cost, since it was a 1-page paper pattern going in a regular envelope. I appreciate that kind of business owner, who would rather lose a dollar in shipping, but gain a relationship and lifelong customer. Like I said, Kimberly Jolly is special in the quilting world.
What a great interview! Hearing how Kimberly and her husband have kept the business going during covid was eye opening. We really need to support small businesses so they can continue in our new normal world.
I just watched this now. Your and Kimberly’s videos are my favourite videos to watch about quilting! I have learned so many new tricks and tips from both of you two and my quilting has improved so much even at 71 lol!!!
I thought it was one of the best interviews to date. Kimberly is so down to earth and interesting. She may be an introvert but she has a great presence and I enjoy all her shows and demonstrations.

I found Kimberly and her business one day last summer when my new dog stole a small bag of thread that was sorted for a cross stitch project. I couldn't find it and the kit was old, but I searched online and there was Fat Quarter Shop and they had my thread. I ordered it and then noticed that this was also a wonderful online quilt shop. The rest is history. I have purchased enough fabric to have a wonderful assortment to use in my many quilt projects. Thanks to Kimberly, I have pieced several tops, learned to sandwich my quilts, and now I have a new Bernina Tula Pink 570 machine just for quilting and embroidering on my quilts. There has never been anyone like Kimberly in the business. She's a fresh and friendly face and as down-to-earth as anyone could be. "You do you" is her standard saying and she means it. Use scraps, use favorite fabrics, use whatever you have to make quilts. She is a great teacher and I appreciate everything about her. I also love Just Get it Done. When I started quilting, I found your videos and I watch them with great interest. Your ideas are spot on and so helpful to a new quilter. Thanks to the both of you for all your time and experience in this wonderful hobby!

The Jelly Roll Jam video was one of the first three videos I watched to get me going making quilts. I had watched your color values video, then Jordan Fabrics Tea Time, (which is the first pattern I made) and then I watched Kimberly’s jelly roll jam video. You three are still my go-tos when watching quilting videos.
Kimberley is very genuine and truly wants to be an innovator in the quilting world. The FQS is on top of fabric lines and notions, and are real encouragers to others. They get most of my quilting dollars because of their offerings and great customer service. Thanks for this great interview!

You are both so down to earth and I can relate to your learning curves. I so often think I have to do something perfectly the first time and I can be very hard on myself. She was talking about quilting before pre-cuts etc. I sewed my first quilt in about 1975. I remember it had a lot of triangles & flying geese. No rotary cutters, no chain piecing. I cut out all of the little triangles one by one and sewed them (by hand, as I didn't have a machine yet). Talk about changes! Thank you, Karen.
I love you both, if something goes wrong no big deal things happen. No one is perfect and things can happen. Just laugh and enjoy. Don't stress it. You both always seem so cool. Just relax. Hugs. Your only human. You are so right Kimberly make a joke and go with the flow. We love you.

I love the fact that she's an introvert. I have to laugh about the fact that owning your own business is the same no matter where you are. If the kids are big enough, they're slave labor, and if they aren't -- well, no, just no, don't touch, off you go. Been there, still doing that. I also love the fact that pre-cut fabric is now a thing. I spent so much time, as a teen trimming down squares with a cardboard template and scissors, only to find that when I was done, not only were all the pieces a different size, but the template was no longer square or it's original size. Thank you for this video.

Aww, what a lovely story, when she was passing quilt stores and 'got curious'. There were no 'quilt stores' yet when I made my first quilt. There weren't Walmarts (that I know of) in Ohio either. My first quilt came from left over fabric from clothing I made during college and the legs of jeans I cut off for the summer. In 1980, I could walk to the rear of the apartment complex where I was living during college, follow some trails thru a wooded area and come out on Morse Rd in Columbus Ohio. There was a Kmart! :) (where there hadn't YET been any in my hometown in NW Ohio) I'd watched my grandmother piece a few quilts over the years and I assumed I'm make one someday too. I thought big city living was something! Walking to the store to buy the fabric for my clothing! Fast forward to 1984, I had my first job after college. I couldn't yet afford cable TV and it was the first time ever, during my life, I didn't have to work on Saturdays, so I tuned my TV to PBS (Cause there's nothing good on the 3 normal stations on weekends) and saw a woman making a quilt! That's when pulled out that box of left over clothing fabric and made a quilt! (I used half inch seams, shhh, don't tell any one. I know they said quarter inch on tv, but I didn't think that was enough). I'm glad I did tho all that denim wanted to fray. I still have that quilt (30 + years) but its in tatters . . . I can't count the number I've made since then. :)
Great interview. I enjoy Kimberly's videos.So helpful and real. She makes some mistakes and that helps us all learn! I really appreciate all the free patterns and sew-a-longs at the Fat Quarter Shop.
Your interviews and guests are awesome. But I have to say - this one is the best one yet. So inspiring - listening to Kimberly just motivates me to continue making my charity quilts - my way of helping others. She is very easy to listen to. Love that she is an introvert running a very successful business and truly wants to focus on customer service.
Fat Quarter Shop is the channel I relied on for my first quilt. In 2016, took a watercolor class and everyone else in the class talked about their quilting. I realized I was going to suck at watercolor, but I knew I could sew. I pulled out my old Janome that I had purchased in the base exchange at Kadena Air Base back in 1977. I went to a quilt store and bought a Christmas jelly roll. I found the Fat Quarter Shop on line, down loaded the Jelly Roll Jam pattern, and on Thanksgiving Day while my turkey cooked, I sewed a quilt top. I loved it and haven't stopped since. Many patterns and fabric from Fat Quarter Shop!!!
Hi Karen, All of your interviews are so interesting. I have learned a lot and enjoyed hearing about all the things that go into quilting, and YouTubing, and all the other things you touch on. Thank You for taking the time to find all these unique people.
Thank you Karen. I got called back into work (I work in Healthcare). It's so strange everyone is asking what I'm working on and I have to say nothing. I'm working 24/7 with 2 nights off. It's strange not to be in the middle of a quilt. So thank you for your videos to keep me going. I have to catch your last video on the life of a scrap... I have scraps. lol. I asked my husband if we have adding machine tape. lol. We used to have so many rolls. Thanks for your hard work doing you tube. 💕
An excellent interview --- it was like we were sitting in a living room, having a friendly, but oh so informational conversation. It gave me a whole new perspective on running an online business, doing videos, anticipating what lies ahead in the quilting life. ...and, oh yes, wife and mother, too! I've gravitated more to FQS in 2020 because they have been able to stay relevant in such a time of change and continue to deliver on so many products and projects that continue to inspire my quilting experience. Thanks, Karen, for yet another great video!

I LOVE the Jelly Roll Jam quilt pattern...as a brand new quilter, I used it to make a few quilts for my grand babies and great niece. It really gave me confidence, and taught me a lot, like nesting seams! Kimberly is a very sweet person and I love to watch her. Thank you Karen for the interview. Karen, you are a wonderful interviewer, this was a great vid. My seamstress grandmother taught me how to sew when I was young. I hadn’t sewn for many years until last year when I decided to make masks which lead to repairing an old quilt she had made. I found Kimberly online and have learned so much from her, she has a very honest delivery. My TH-cam feed is all about quilts and I now sew along with Fat Quarter Shop. Thank you for the videos!
Kimberly Jolly and Jenny Doan, both taught me how to quilt, and they are still teaching me😁, and I´m in Germany, so you can see the wide spread both ladies have and how big they are in the quilting world! Not to talk about the possibility to shop in their wonderful online stores! Simply wonderful and I´m very grateful for all their generous way of sharing knowledge, I wouldn't have learned anything about quilting without them! It’s big in Texas because Texas has a ton of people who are still into tradition and passing along skills. Quilting is a gift you pass down through generations and Texas is all about traditions. It’s one thing I love about my state.

Aww, what a lovely story, when she was passing quilt stores and 'got curious'.
There were no 'quilt stores' yet when I made my first quilt. There weren't Walmarts (that I know of) in Ohio either. My first quilt came from left over fabric from clothing I made during college and the legs of jeans I cut off for the summer. In 1980, I could walk to the rear of the apartment complex where I was living during college, follow some trails thru a wooded area and come out on Morse Rd in Columbus Ohio. There was a Kmart! :) (where there hadn't YET been any in my hometown in NW Ohio) I'd watched my grandmother piece a few quilts over the years and I assumed I'm make one someday too.
I thought big city living was something! Walking to the store to buy the fabric for my clothing! Fast forward to 1984, I had my first job after college. I couldn't yet afford cable TV and it was the first time ever, during my life, I didn't have to work on Saturdays, so I tuned my TV to PBS (Cause there's nothing good on the 3 normal stations on weekends) and saw a woman making a quilt!
That's when pulled out that box of left over clothing fabric and made a quilt! (I used half inch seams, shhh, don't tell any one. I know they said quarter inch on tv, but I didn't think that was enough). I'm glad I did tho all that denim wanted to fray. I still have that quilt (30 + years) but its in tatters . . . I can't count the number I've made since then. :)
Love watching Kimberly. She shows exactly how she approaches patterns. It gives me new ways to look at patterns.

Your interviews and guests are awesome. But I have to say - this one is the best one yet. So inspiring - listening to Kimberly just motivates me to continue making my charity quilts - my way of helping others. She is very easy to listen to. Love that she is an introvert running a very successful business and truly wants to focus on customer service.
Fat Quarter Shop is the channel I relied on for my first quilt. In 2016, took a watercolor class and everyone else in the class talked about their quilting. I realized I was going to suck at watercolor, but I knew I could sew. I pulled out my old Janome that I had purchased in the base exchange at Kadena Air Base back in 1977. I went to a quilt store and bought a Christmas jelly roll. I found the Fat Quarter Shop on line, down loaded the Jelly Roll Jam pattern, and on Thanksgiving Day while my turkey cooked, I sewed a quilt top. I loved it and haven't stopped since. Many patterns and fabric from Fat Quarter Shop!!!
Hi Karen, All of your interviews are so interesting. I have learned a lot and enjoyed hearing about all the things that go into quilting, and YouTubing, and all the other things you touch on. Thank You for taking the time to find all these unique people.

Thank you Karen. I got called back into work (I work in Healthcare). It's so strange everyone is asking what I'm working on and I have to say nothing. I'm working 24/7 with 2 nights off. It's strange not to be in the middle of a quilt. So thank you for your videos to keep me going. I have to catch your last video on the life of a scrap... I have scraps. lol. I asked my husband if we have adding machine tape. lol. We used to have so many rolls. Thanks for your hard work doing you tube. 💕
I have enough rolls to make at least 20 quilts
An excellent interview --- it was like we were sitting in a living room, having a friendly, but oh so informational conversation. It gave me a whole new perspective on running an online business, doing videos, anticipating what lies ahead in the quilting life. ...and, oh yes, wife and mother, too! I love her! So like me, I like that she admits she doesn't know what to do with modern. I love that she is gaining confidence as her business grows.
I've gravitated more to FQS in 2020 because they have been able to stay relevant in such a time of change and continue to deliver on so many products and projects that continue to inspire my quilting experience. Thanks, Karen, for yet another great video!

I LOVE the Jelly Roll Jam quilt pattern...as a brand new quilter, I used it to make a few quilts for my grand babies and great niece. It really gave me confidence, and taught me a lot, like nesting seams! Kimberly is a very sweet person and I love to watch her. Thank you Karen for the interview. Karen, you are a wonderful interviewer, this was a great vid. My seamstress grandmother taught me how to sew when I was young. I hadn’t sewn for many years until last year when I decided to make masks which lead to repairing an old quilt she had made. I found Kimberly online and have learned so much from her, she has a very honest delivery. My TH-cam feed is all about quilts and I now sew along with Fat Quarter Shop. Thank you for the videos!

Kimberly Jolly and Jenny Doan, both taught me how to quilt, and they are still teaching me😁, and I´m in Germany, so you can see the wide spread both ladies have and how big they are in the quilting world! Not to talk about the possibility to shop in their wonderful online stores! Simply wonderful and I´m very grateful for all their generous way of sharing knowledge, I wouldn't have learned anything about quilting without them! It’s big in Texas because Texas has a ton of people who are still into tradition and passing along skills. Quilting is a gift you pass down through generations and Texas is all about traditions. It’s one thing I love about my state.
