Even native speakers use different words in similar situations....like speaking incorrect words...In spoken English, it can go both ways but sometimes " if I were " sounds more natural as compared to " if I had been".... The former is about a hypothetical situation and a kind of advice giving sentences whereas the latter is about the actual happening in the past. e.g. जब में छोटा होता स्कूल से लेट हो जाता था तो मुझे सजा दी जाती थी If I was late to school when I was younger, I 'd get detention. The example you are talking about is about different uses of 'was'.
